Hey all, hope you enjoyed your Saturday!

Seems like the thread might be tapped out discussion wise and is getting sidetracked and into the weeds and poo poo, at least with the current posters.

So we'd like to try something that seemed to work well with the D&D feedback thread, namely: When the thread reopens, we would like to hear only from people who haven't posted yet itt. If you've already posted itt and you really need to give your thoughts feel free to PM me or another mod, if you post again you'll get a day, but that's just to make room for people who might want have something to say but haven't posted yet for whatever reason.

Leaving it closed for tonight because I want to smoke weed and play dark souls 2. be good to each other, peace <3

e: alternately, might make it so that everyone can make one more post going forward to sum up since tomorrow's the last full day it'll be open

anyway back to bideo gaem

If you've posted before this point and you post again you'll get a day, but that's just to make room for people who might have something to say but haven't posted yet for whatever reason.

I'll be around reading but probably won't get to write anything in response until later today or tonight

Just to say a bit more about this, generally if an alt-check is requested and it's not a probated/permabanned user, thread/forumbanned user, or someone using the alt to make trouble, we'll just say it's not a currently-punished user. Sometimes people want to make alts for whatever reason, and we don't want to blow that up for no reason.

I feel like things have been better since flavius was removed as a moderator. I tend to really only read the succ zone and the covid thread regularly and I'll catch up on the epstein thread and the marxism thread over weekends if I have time.

I guess I'd like less non stop doomer and aggressive posting from some people but given the state of just about everything I can't blame them. I don't think moderators should take action on that.

A question though, have there been changes made in cspam as a result of the feedback posted in this thread?

randomly saw this thread, skipped to the end, landed on this post. perfect c-spam mod experience. im not here to read 29 pages of nerd bullshit, the mods aren't here to moderate a discussion. I skip a thousand posts, the mods close the thread for a day instead of just probing the people who were being annoying for a few hours. this is a lazy forum for lazy posters, but every few months we keep pretending the rules matter and very serious people are very seriously moderating this very serious forum.

my feedback: get rid of the rules no one is going to read anyway, stop reproducing academic "safe space" discourse that ultimately serves no one, give buttons to people who are chill, take them away from people who are burned out or too close to the drama, and focus on moderating behavior instead of enforcing idealistic rules

QUEER FRASIER

I lurk more than I post but c-spam seems to be getting a lot better. The new crop of mods seem chill and well-respected.

Now that the flavius reign is over my main takeaway is that the c-spam mods shouldn't be trying to build some sort of unified community identity. Calling C-Spam 'fractured' feels dramatic but there seem to be some pretty solid ideological differences between say, marxism or glenn thread regulars and trump thread regulars. That means if, as with Flav, you pluck a moderator from one of the threads and empower them to police acceptable discourse in a bunch of disparate threads, you're going to end up fighting fires constantly. C-Spam is better off with a bunch of small mods who understand themselves as internet janitors than a couple Big Mods trying to implement their vision of what the forum should look like.

The fact that nobody including his posting enemies wants Larry forum banned and yet he is despite repeated complaints, and that seemingly everyone wants the garbage rear end mod who made this place unreadable for a year and then defended pedo porn gone but he's still allowed to post here, is completely insane and a sign that more drama is ahead. Additionally it remains disturbing how long the community's pleas that flavius was a horrible moderator were ignored. Going forward it would be great for there to be some way for bad mods to get de-modded without them having to out themselves as a defender of pedophile cartoons. Seems like it could save us all a lot of trouble. That whole incident has left a really bad taste in my mouth. Big 'meet the new boss, same as the old boss' vibes.

I'm definitely in favor of a crackdown on deranged doomposting. The idea that everyone here needs to be protected from Larry's posting while we have whole threads of people celebrating dumbass boomers getting effectively tricked by their cultural elites into committing suicide by COVID makes my head hurt. And watching people trot out the tired old "the world's on fire!!" line is so pathetic. I don't think people realize this has become the C-Spam version of "this is the most important election ever!!" Newsflash, the world is always on fire, that's not an excuse to act like a complete piece of poo poo all the time.

I don't really have any mod suggestions because most of the good posters deserve better than that. Gradenko is one of the only good posters here and it's hilarious they got de-ik'd. comedyblissoption should at least be the ik of the glenn thread. tiler kiwi would probably make a good full mod. A loving dog would be a good option too. Xaris is one of the few people I see around here who is basically always adding some new information and never just being a huge rear end in a top hat, which is pretty remarkable.

E: Honestly I pretty much just second what Centrist Committee said much more succinctly.

that's something I've been wondering in general: how many bigger thread OPs or posters in general are cool with refreshing their threads once in a while? I know it seems effectively pointless to some, but it does sometimes seem to help bigger threads if they get in a rut. Doesn't have to be monthly or anything specific like that.

I'll take the hit for this but yes the old thread. Also if possible please restore the OP, I believe it was just McCaine's OP from a LF thread.

I don't notice the moderation in the threads I read, which means things are going well I guess. My only real request is that if someone can't stop making themselves the main character after a day or two of the whole thread dunking on them then maybe they need a break to cool off instead of closing the whole thread of whatever. I hope the mods can separate out 'stop dodging this issue by being a shithead' from 'everyone pay attention to my weird grudges against posters'.

Also Arf seems creatively spent at the moment. Get well soon Arf.

yeah, I think that's my goal going forward. I think there are ways to bring posters from different threads together, which will probably happen for election and other big politics news threads, but also by people posting more threads.

my only other idea ive had is trying to run some kind of subforum game thread - there were a few that happened in LF back in the day - but i need to do some serious research to find something that's manageable to run and that will actually be of interest to people here.

As a big time lurker my number one pet peeve is the inter-forum rivalry. Threads often end up sniping at D&D and its posters (and vice versa) and it's super tedious. I don't know if there's anything that can be done about it, but it's really old and I wish that people had more of a live and let live attitude. We get it, everyone who posts in D&D is a dirty lib.

So actually, live and let lib I guess.

it's probably not possible but can twitter embedding be turned off in one forum via a stylesheet or something? just causing their embedded js to throw an error would be good enough. it's a toxic cesspool at the best of times and political twitter takes that and throws in radioactive hot takes, deliberate misreading of what someone says and the brigading of complete nobodies over a half-formed thought meant for a handful of followers thrown wide to the jackals.

it's also incredibly lazy to just see some poo poo hate-RTd on your feed and tab over to one of the threads here to mash ^V. yeah, i'll mock a poo poo take from twitter with everyone else because that's what it's a/b tested to maximize.

otherwise my feedback is that cspam has improved lately so keep doing what you've been doing i guess.

I agree that less twitter would be more gooder, but that'd probably be best accomplished by more posters posting more things that aren't necessarily "look at what this idiot said on twitter" rather than disabling embeds per forum or whatever.

e: Got a reply from Harik re: the above, posting the PM with their permission:

i was going to say that it's all well and good to hope posters don't engage with twitter but they're literally doing unethical sociology experiments on the public to maximize that dopamine hit so good luck with that.

one person addicted to twitter is a personal failing, millions of people is a systemic problem that requires systemic solutions. breaking their embeds might help because you would have to follow a blind link to find out what you're supposed to be hate-clicking on and most people won't bother. if it's important enough to share anyway the poster can use their own words to explain why.

anyway see you tomorrow and have a good evening.
This is a good point actually, I'll think about it. might not hurt to experiment a bit. Would like to hear what others think.

And finally, regarding slurs:

this is a leftist space and punching down sucks. the majority of mods and iks don't like that poo poo, but it's been enforced sporadically because of lack of staff (I was the only mod for a couple months), or unwillingness to deal with the problem because of pushback or lack of direction, which was understandable. yes, we need to look at context and not just be human word filters. we also need to be more consistent in probating for slurs, and hopefully with a larger mod staff and discussion among us we can do that.
