Binged through the LP so far. Odin owns. This is making me want to find my Fates cart, which is a bad idea, I should just play one of the 3H routes I haven't gone through.

Also, slow armors work best in games like Echoes SoV because of the combined arms factor. That you deploy every unit you’ve got means that Soldiers can have a place, even if they’re only an extra warm body. There’s no opportunity cost as there is in most other FEs to deploying them, which is damning with faint praise I know.

I dug out my Fates copy and I'm playing along on Hard while I remember what all the fiddly little items do. Glad that they at least had the sense to let you start at Chapter 6 instead of going through the tutorial every time. Sure, it might mean a slightly less optimal Corrin and attendant, but I don't have to hear about the ocean. Might gently caress around and give Nyx the Witch's Seal or Dread Fighter item.

I have decided that using one of each of the route bonus rewards is fine. Changing into a Witch does wonders for Nyx's viability since she's actually suddenly got the stats to do what she wants to do: double and explode guys with the benefit of extra movement to boot. Getting Warp down the line is huge too. Wondering if I should mess around with Ballistician for Niles or Mozu but I've never used one before. Do they use regular bows?

e: Oh, right, you have to choose between free Witch item or free Ballista item. Glad I picked Witch.

Ballistician is male only, since Fates kept the gender locks for every DLC class other than Dark Flyer and Dread Fighter.

Ballisticians use bows, their skills essentially turn them into a mobile ballista and they gain no experience when using those skills. Also 4 move and slow as balls but they do have high defense. The class kind of sucks.

If you're looking at DLC I think Vanguard can fix most of the things wrong with Arthur.

Oh, lame. Why can't a girl shoot a long range weapon of war!!!

Is the Vanguard DLC free? I have little interest in paying for more Fates content.

Shura comes in with lock pick and stave utility, and +1 move. He can replace an underperforming Niles no problem in 98% of situations (barring the capture of rallyman). His biggest issue is lack of supports.

Also, I demand you use all of your stat boosters next time.

I'm feeling comfortable enough with hard that I might restart on Lunatic bearing in mind what few kids I want to have. Jakob / Azura can give Shigure Rally Resistance, Shigure can use his kid seal to immediately get the Rally Speed from Falcon Knight, then swap to Wyvern Lord for Rally Defense. +4 of each defense, a speed boost, and the 10% heal from his special rally. Rallyman might be cheaper, but he's not on a bird. If Seals are no issue, then I could swap him back to Kinshi for eventual Amaterasu, but they absolutely are and Wyvern Lord's good enough of a class to end in.

Silas / Carmilla can pass down Sol and Savage Blow (really, she could pass down Trample but that's a lot of levels to dump into Carmilla). Odin's raison d'etre is to hang out with Elise and practice the samurai arts enough to get vantage...

Now that I'm writing it all out, it's a tough game of "hey, if I pair everyone up, I get more paralogues and thus more items and exp which can make more paralogues" versus "I don't want to have to use shitter units like Arthur and Laz more than necessary in difficult maps." and i have a hard time ignoring that the dragon's gate is right there! what~if~i~just~ruined~the~xp~curve

So far in my first go at Fates/Conquest I reclassed Mozu immediately and she's been a very solid archer for me.

This is the right decision. While Villager is technically its own class in Fates rather than a complete trap as in Awakening, Underdog skill is at best nice to have but not necessary and the Merchant class is a huge gimmick. Helps that bows have pretty respectable power in Fates so she can take kills without issue.

Thinking about ways to get rid of the critical hit system of FE without losing mechanical depth since all but a very specialized player unit will be able to rely on them, whereas an enemy unit can just ruin your run / force a Divine Pulse without counterplay. Maybe something like a "token" system? Hit a target three times with a Killing Edge and your third / fourth / whatever always hits for triple? That'd be one way to replicate a 25% crit rate while also making it something you can play around. It'd make Luck less of a useful stat but it's already kinda whatever.

i also think archers should always have 2-3 range and maybe a lovely crossbow that only hits 1, it's a great way to give them a niche away from archers or Cav With Jav don't @ me

vv Yeah, I know it's not really mimicking it. It's doing a similar thing on a reliable level that can be predicted. Even if it's down to "ten count to hit," I'm mostly just spitballin for chattin. (Also maybe it'd only stack on consecutive hits on a single target?)

The life hack for that mission is using Camilla to Lunge on the gaggle of outlaws to the east after softening them up (Corrin or a decent ranged weapon user like a Kodachi Hero can do the job) and having her and her pair up unit take care of the thieving outlaws.

Apparently Conquest capture-focused runs are pretty fun because enemy units often have useful abilities. I picked up a Knight in I think Nina's paralogue that had Wary Fighter, Inspiration, and one of the 1/2 damage against a bunch of weapons skills. That means that knight doesn't need to go to General and can get on a horse for Great Knight, running around with a broad +2/-2 2-tile aura at 7 move and three weapons to throw around.

If Ninja Hell had the FE9/10-esque Ally system where you can at least generally direct your allied armies around I think it'd be much better received. Having to deal with Saizo sucking up experience and trying to keep his suicidal rear end alive is a recipe for frustration even before the map. I'm' now a little bit ahead of you in my play, and Fuga's ride wasn't as bad as I feared. This was much worse since it's right at the point where you've got to promote units to keep them relevant but you don't have quite enough Seals to go around. These unpromoted units suffer all the more from Ninja stat debuffs.

It'd be a cute reveal if all of her servants were just great improvisers with maybe less than great morals who wanted to support young Peri no matter what she was into, so when she tried to kill them with her spoon or whatever, they'd ham it up and pretend to die. This led to her having a somewhat skewed sense of life and death and lower her kill count pretty intensely, so her preferred "fun" ways of killing were as suggested above comically ineffectual.

Honestly I think I'd rather do Siegbert's paralogue now just to guarantee Peri a level and get her out of a mounted class for fox hell. Might be unfair, but he's one of my least favorite kids thanks to his atrocious voice acting.

Imo, using an Entrap staff makes Forrest's paralogue nice and relaxed without having to worry about the axeman they send to gank him. Easy XP and bond and weapon levels. Sure, it's ONE OF THE ENTRAP STAVE USES but it's the elixir problem. Better to use them and get suboptimal benefit than to wait for benefit that might never come.

I was thinking about trying to minmax a Luck-based character. Best I came up with was

quote:

Midori
Salvage Blow (Blacksmith, 15)
Dragon Ward (Hoshido Noble, 5)
Profiteer (Merchant, 5)
Good Fortune (Merc, 5)
Hoshiodan Unity (Hoshido Noble, 15)

Dad must be Kaze. Kaze can pass Good Fortune from Silas Friendship
Mom must be Corrin? Bloodline can pass Hoshido Noble
Profiteer is natural from Merchant
Corrin must pass Salvage Blow ??

Corrin can't have Luck bane

But like. Salvage Blow is so high in the Blacksmith line that it'd take forever to reach, and Good Fortune (while I like it more than most) isn't that good.

Salvage Blow isn't that high up, it's the level 5 Blacksmith skill, Lancebreaker's the 15. And Kaze'd pick up the Cav line from Silas, not Merc, so Good Fortune and Salvage Blow are mutually exclusive here, both would have to be the inherited skill from Corrin. Not sure which would be the way to go, off the top of my head I want to say Salvage Blow because the potential to snag more Hoshidan weapons on Conquest sounds like a more interesting/useful niche trick to have than Bad Renewal. But being able to sub out all your Iron Lances for Naginatas or whatever may be less enticing if you're actually engaging with all the systems and have several of those lances forged to +1 or 2 instead of forgetting to touch the forge 90% of the time like I do.

Oh, good catches. I guess I kept Silas as a Merc for so long I forgot his base class is Cav. If I could give Corrin a Mercenary specialty, Kaze could Partner Seal into it and pull Good Fortune, I think?

Deeprealms are such a miserable concept since they make every parent an absolute piece of poo poo who ignores their kids. Azura somehow doesn't even take her own goddamn kid to Valla to explain what's going on with her, and with him. Azura sucks.

Kid mechanics have the most utility in Conquest since you've got such XP and item crunch, but it's difficult to make them ideal perfect like you might want without losing out on short-term benefit. IE, I've got Elise and Odin. I can pass down Vantage to Ophelia, no problem, he only needs level 10 in Samurai. But the best skill I could pass Ophelia as Elise, Trample, is from Malig Knight 15. I want to do her paralogue ASAP for Lightning, Horse Spirit, and Calamity Gate access, they're really powerful, so do I get those early, or do I make a shitwrecker Ophelia only for the lategame?

Ignatius also suffers from having one of the worst personal skills in the game. "When Ignatius is the lead unit in attack or guard stance, -2 damage taken. If unsupported, +2 damage taken." Sure, it's better to have a stance partner than not, but for a tank -- or if he sidepromotes to a flyer -- sometimes he might have to be on his own for a hot sec. Inviting extra free damage for not stapling a partner onto him is brutal.

My Soleil's doing real well as a Bow Knight with Nohrian Curse and Sol from her parents. She dealt with that horrible hallway in the upcoming Ryouma map without too much issue.

Put it all on Corrin.

Just finished my Hard run today. Broadly enjoyable throughout barring a few deeply unfun gimmicks (kitsune hell, lucky dip potion map, ninja hallway, etc). I'm surprised you haven't put any thought towards a Wary Fighter user. Sometimes (especially in upcoming maps) you just need a spot blocked, which your Bennys of the world can do admirably. Give them a Brave Lance on top to really get something scary.

It's not like there's not an in-Fates character justification for gay babies. It's a little-known mechanic, but if you go to a Castle over and over and mutually raise your relationship, eventually you can produce a kid with a random personal skill, even between two Corrins of the same gender.

https://fireemblem.fandom.com/wiki/Bond_Units

quote:

. They are not an actual child, as they can be created by two players of the same gender and the game announces them as being "born from the earth" due to the strength of the players' bond.

The biggest benefit to Ignatius is that if you do his lude relatively late, you can Offspring seal him high enough level to take all of the good General skills without having to be a General.

One of the worst bits about Birthright is that actual good thrown weapons (Javelins and Hand Axes) are in very short supply. Sure, you get good Hidden Weapons, but that's not something you want on everyone. I think I have one Javelin as of chapter 25, and it's from when Silas joined. Naginatas generally win out in utility over Lances (mostly the Dual and Guard Naginatas), but relying on the Bolt Naginata for 1-2 range on a Spear specialist (for me, Oboro and Shiro) is an exercise in pain. Also, you can't get Nosferatu in Birthright period, as near as I can tell.

Outside of that one weapon DLC map, of course.

Yeah. I had Rinkah marry Ryoma to gently caress around with Shiro having Salvage Blow, but it was not worth it.

I've taken Orochi through Witch and now into Dark Falcon. Two points: jeez. Orochi really is the only usable mage in Birthright. Hayato's bases are terrible and he doesn't have any levels where he can flourish in a niche to catch up. I guess you can use the Challenge maps to baby him, but to what end? Second: The Witch Shadowgift skill is truly worthless on Birthright, it almost feels like it shouldn't be there. I get the feeling they intended there to be more than one dark magic spell but it fell through. And even then, Orochi is *fine,* not fantastic. Her magic is great and she has Horse Spirit / Calamity Gate access so she's never terrible, but her speed really founders. Even as an Onmioyji, Sakura has bad magic and is frail as hell. Guess you could use Felicia with the Flame Shuriken, but...
