I had a really good time this month, thanks for engaging with my newbie opinions on horror films. Without this thread and the horror thread, I can guarantee I never would've seen most of the movies I watched this year. The franchise movies, sure, maybe, but Tenebrae? Masque of the Red Death? The Possessor? Never. I watched 31 films in October, more than I ever thought I would, and only one was a rewatch. Thanks a lot to everyone for broadening my horizons significantly.

I have an Excel spreadsheet on my desktop called The List, where I note down all the recommendations that catch my eye, with its own tab just for horror movies. It's gone from 85 to 135 rows this October, and that's not counting the things that I actually got around to seeing. I'd planned to watch In the Earth, but never found the time; I'd hoped to watch Titane, but couldn't get a hold of it. Still, the whole venture was mostly successful. Last October I got way behind, and realised at a certain point I'd have to do a couple marathons to get to 31, and cut it short so as not to ruin the fun. This time went a lot better. Next go around, the plan is to only watch things recommended in the thread (the thread for next time, that is). The spreadsheet is a useful tool, but it's better to try and watch things as soon as I hear about them, so they never go on the spreadsheet in the first place.

Wrap-up post for Fran's convenience.

I had a ton of fun this year as always. I tend to stick to new-to-me movies anyway, so with one exception (Hell House LLC) these were all new to me.

My goal was 31 movies. Here's the list, as for some reason I didn't keep it in an LBD list this year?

1. The Lure
2. Candyman (2021)
3. Wyrmwood
4. Malevolent
5. Vivarium
6. Three Extremes
7. Def By Temptation
8. Fanatic (or Die Die My Darling)
9. Kuso
10. The Pit
11. V/H/S94
12. Blackwood
13. Shadow Of The Hawk
14. The Queen Of Black Magic (1981)
15. Monstrous (2020)
16. American Psycho 2
17. The Nesting
18. Halloween Kills
19. Mimic
20. The Mutilator
21. The Field Guide To Evil
22. The Editor
23. Godzilla Raids Again
24. Grizzly
25. The Curse Of The Mummy's Tomb (1963)
26. The Funhouse
27. Hell Night
28. Bullets Of Justice
29. Dr. Black Mr. Hyde
30. The Thing From Another World
31. Gonjiam Haunted Asylum
32. Trick Or Treat (1986)
33. Ginger Snaps Back
34. The Pit And The Pendulum (1961)
35. Lucifer's Women
36. Death Machine
37. Bệnh Viện Ma
38. Ghostkeeper
39. Night Of The Demons 2
40. Hell House LLC (my only rewatch!)
41. Madhouse
42. Hollow

The worst: easily American Psycho 2 - it was watched for the Hooptober worst sequel you can find, and I've already seen some of the other candidates.

Top 5 is hard, there were a lot of bangers:
1. The Funhouse
2. Trick Or Treat
3. The Editor
4. Mimic
5. The Lure
Honorable Mention: Bullets Of Justice for being so weird.

Weirdest was definitely Kuso.

I wish I would have filled out more squares after I got a bingo. I definitely would have checked off a few, but didn't feel like editing so I gave up. Next year I need to just use a red x or fill tool.

Otherwise, I had a pretty solid year. A few stand outs (neon demon, titane, vhs 94, personal shopper) and only a couple of outright stinkers (counting Halloween Kills in that category) And honorable mention to Christopher Walken's performance in Communion.

Yea I hate to say it but Halloween Kills ended up being a bummer for me this year. I did a whole marathon through the series, finally added Halloween 4 and 5 to my blu ray collection it was a solid week of celebrating the Halloween series and I wanted to like Halloween Kills really bad but it just didn't happen.

Do you like scary movies?

Recapping my wrap up to make it easier for Fran.

Managed 135 watched with Spooky Bingo covered card. I probably could've done more but that work thing that I mentioned in Discord happened. What really worked for me this time was predominantly sticking to a particular range, in this case 70s and 80s and diverging for the Spooky or if I really wasn't feeling sitting through my range. It kept things fresh if that makes sense, compared to the Challenge I watched nothing but streaming films and made it through what then must've been every scarecrow movie on Prime. I really liked the Spooky Card, it leaves things flexible for how much one wants to participate. I will admit to getting warm fuzzies when after I reviewed a movie and seeing others review it. That's why I list where a film's streaming so if others want to give it a try, they know where to go and not worry about going to some sketchy site.

I did finally finish getting all my past reviews up on Letterboxd, though I think I'm missing one of the May Challenges. Interestingly, there's still some significant movies I've missed out of doing for the Challenges so I'm getting an idea where to go on the next Challenge. Surprise kicker is when I spoke with my boss about my 'horror discussion group', he right out said if I need a different schedule to make it to streams/gatherings to let him know and they'll shift my schedule for it. God I love working with fellow movie nuts.

All in all, this was a fun go with Scream Stream.

:catte: Spooky Bingo • Tales of Terror
The House of the Dead • Streaming • 2.5/5
A pretty run of the mill, preachy horror anthology. The ending is so predictable it might have been more interesting if it hadn’t happened that way. Filmed entirely on location in Oklahoma and also known by the alternate title “Alien Zone.” The film effects at the end of the first segment were pretty unique, so I guess that was my favorite. The overall setup was pretty unique I think - standard someone lets you in out of the rain, and now you’re stuck listening to them, except this individual just has a casket room in his house. (I have no idea why our main character didn’t leave at the point he entered this room though.)

:catte: Spooky Bingo • Don't Feed the Plants
Little Otilk • Rental • 4/5
I think I initally found out about this movie through a clip of the baby, Otik. The stop motion and general theme grabbed my interest, so I’m glad I was able to pick up a rental copy. The stop motion fit Otik perfectly - since he’s a tree stump, there’s no uncanny valley to really duck into, so you can focus on how weird this little creature is. He’s a cute little dude when he isn’t engulfing everything. At the beginning, the daughter (Alzbetka) was kind of irritating, but as the movie continues and we shift from the Horak’s view to her view, she becomes charming and kind of sweet. I think there’s a broader theme somewhere in there about life and responsiblity how children end up, but that’ll have to stew for a while before I can put it into any real words. So in the meantime, this was a cute spooky film perfect for Halloween.

:catte: Spooky Bingo • Video Nasty
Don't Go in the Woods • Streaming • 2/5
In which a bunch of dipshits go into the woods for “survival training” only to get macheted to death by the world’s jingliest wild man. Various other woods adjacent people (such as day hikers and hippies) are also slashed to pieces. Who knows how long this guy has been doing this, because he has quite the drivers license collection. There’s a vague plot to this film, although nothing makes sense until Craig dies because then they have to look for him.
Some of the shots in this are well composed and technically competent, but I feel like those were happy accidents. In the same way, there’s a baffling but interesting transition between day and night where a wheelchair hiker is beheaded by the wild man. (He only shows up in like 3 shots, and only exists to continually fall over.) When he’s beheaded, it’s clearly dusk because you can see him, and as the camera follows his head + body falling down the mountainside it becomes night with only visible silhouettes. This would be neat if not for the baffling implication that this guy has been rolling down the mountain for at least an hour.
There’s goofs to laugh at, but they weren’t planned to be goofy. And at the end, they explicitly unravel a loose end by showing a victim’s unattended toddler playing in the woods with an axe.

:catte: Spooky Bingo • Femme Fatale
The Night Visitor 2: Heather's Story • DVD • 1.5/5
Darthemed tricked me into watching this by having me pick a square from the spooky bingo. Somehow, this has a worse plot than The Night Visitor. It at least manages to keep pace better than the previous, but to no real effect. And with a cop-out non-ending, I’m mostly just confused as to why this was made? There’s not enough focus on any one character to feel connected to anyone, and it’s connected to the previous film by the vaguest threads. Once again, the funky 90s arcade music that plays over the end credits is the best part of this movie. At least it was a union production?

:catte: Spooky Bingo • Holiday Massacre
Candy Corn • DVD • 2.5/5
After a series of very 80s flicks, I was so happy to watch something shot with good technique and not in 360p that I was able to ignore how bare bones the plot of this movie is. I feel sad for Jacob because he’s taken advantage of the whole movie, even by his new “family”. The small town atmosphere was very accurate to me because I’ve been in tiny rural towns like that. (A church I went to for a year was pretty much exactly like the setting, except there were no black people I’m relatively certain.) It’s really unfortunate that the plot lost as much steam as it did along the way, because I’m pretty much always down with a “freaks fight back” plot beat. I feel like the background characters all did an excellent job (like Fox, who was legitimately shaken at seeing more murders in that one day than he’s probably seen in his life.) The soundtrack was good, the shooting was good, it was fine from a technical aspect. I just wish they had a better plot to go with it.

:catte: Spooky Bingo • Indian Horror Film
Pizza • Streaming • 3.5/5
This was cute and funny. At first I was pretty annoyed with our main character because he acts like a real piece of work, but once he gets his act together he’s pretty lovable. The gags were well executed and I really liked the way some shots were framed (like when they’re putting together the pizza to bake.) I’ve never seen a movie before where they… cut back to the beginning to reveal that a whole different plot was actually happening? So that was weird to me. But it wasn’t a bad ending.

:catte: Spooky Bingo • Rung Ron
House In the Alley • DVD • 2/5
This started out really strong, with a truly heartbreaking miscarriage. Than and Thaoh are already having a hard time going through such an awful experience, and it’s compounded by the ever-pressuring MIL who hates Than and constantly calls her son to complain about something. Than starts hallucinating as she slowly returns to daily life… and things slowly go down hill from there. She’s possessed, but only kind of? There’s some spooky noises? The scariest thing is how willing Thaoh is to go out on the slippery tile roof in the middle of the night to look for mystery rumbles. The spookiness escalates but it’s so weird and disconnected that it’s more a series of events than a plot. Smack on a “that house burned down 20 years ago” at the end and you’re good to go on your beach vacation. The actors clearly have a lot of potential, the script just wasn’t really up to par with them.

:catte: Spooky Bingo • Asylum
Gonjiam Haunted Asylum • Streaming • 4/5
I heard a lot of good things about this so I was really excited to watch it, and I think it held up. I really liked how they set it up as a livestreaming web show. I was unclear on exactly when the stream cut out in relation to what we were watching, but that's probably just because I'm a dumb American. The weird fish eye effect of all the go-pro cameras added a nice weird aura to everything, and it also made all of the scenes with anything (or one) behind the characters extra intense. Kind of in the same vein as Grave Encounters, which I also really enjoyed.

:catte: Spooky Bingo • REC

God loving dammit this was so loving annoying because no one told the poo poo head producer/agent/creep (seriously, secretly videoing a bunch of high school girls?) to gently caress off, even though the whole expedition is clearly such a reckless (and pointless imo) idea. Where are these girls parents?! The way it was set up made some of the initial confounding factors easy to call (of course the loving rear end in a top hat ghost storyteller with his loving boombox guy is easily possessed and I think if the actual priest is telling you something is a bad idea you should maybe stop? The apparition effects leave much to be desired, but they didn't really take away from the final product so just something mildly silly to chuckle at in the moment. Interesting how this interacts with the group's actual history, and provides an interesting out for the girl who it sounds like just didn't really want to be in the group anymore. gently caress that agent, eat poo poo and die from your fuckin graffiti curse shithead.

FINAL GIRL CONTEST

Overall this was a pretty good year.

Watched a lot of things. More than I expected actually. Not everything was great but I didn't watch anything I regretted spending time on. Even Slugs had some really cool effects to save itself from the horrible acting and boiler plate plot. Biggest highlights were probably Def by Temptation and Cast a Deadly Spell.

Next time I am going to try to watch a more international crop of films and maybe keep things a bit less 80s focused as films from the 80s made up almost half of what I watched and I didn't watch anything released earlier than 1968. I also still have a lot of films on my list that I wanted to watch this year but didn't get around to or couldn't find a copy of (Images, Kwaidan, Penda's Fen, Skull: The Mask, to name a few)

1. Rawhead Rex (1986)

2. Basket Case ( 1982)

3. Edge of the Axe (1988)

4. Fear Street 1994 (2021)

5. Fear Street 1978 (2021)

6. Fear Street 1666 (2021)

7. Yokai Monsters: 100 Monsters (1968) AKA 100 Spookstories

8. Yokai Monsters: Spook Warfare (1968)
9. Def by Temptation (1990)

10. A Warning to the Curious (1972)

and
Curve (2016)

11. Laurin (1989)

12.Slugs (1988)

13.The Woman in Black (1989)

14.Dýrið (2021) AKA Lamb

15.The Lure (2015)

16. Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971)

17. Crimson Peak (2015)

18. Strangler vs Strangler (1984)

19.Dead and Buried (1981)

20. Raw (2017)

21. Cast a Deadly Spell (1991)

The gifs for the two Yokai films don't seem to work. I watched them on the Arrow streaming service which, understandably, doesn't seem to allow any sort of screen capture and I'm not clever enough to circumvent it.
