Unfortunately, while my wife has her driver's license here, I don't yet (I'm Canadian and have to take a driving test to switch my license to a UK one, but COVID delays have meant that I can't any time soon). This pretty much rules out us renting a truck and then moving that way, so I'm considering pod or container delivery services.

Has anyone had experience with moving within the UK via pod or container delivery? Any advice, either in how to proceed or what companies are good/bad?

Was wondering why you don't want to use a regular house moving firm?

Starmer’s ‘beauty of work’ was a nazi propaganda slogan

quote:

During his conference speech today – summarised by one wag as ‘spend 17 years getting ready for work and learning to follow the rules, then the rest of your life working and following the rules’ – Kei Starmer quoted ‘the beauty of work’ as a driving force for what passes for his ‘vision’s the UK.

Starmer attributed his idea to Auden – but in fact the ‘beauty of work’, ‘Schönheit der Arbeit’, was the slogan of a propaganda department of the nazi regime from 1934 to 1945

I don't know any companies personally as I used a firm local to me rather than a national. What I would do if I were you is ask around on local facebook groups for any recommendations. I don't know the cost sorry but if you were going to hire a container and transport it I don't think it would be much difference in price. Obviously cost of a removal firm will depend on how far you're going and exactly what service they provide - some will do your packing for you too.

May I recommend hiring crates to pack rather than trying to construct and stick up a billion cardboard boxes? Having had to stick loads of cardboard boxes together for my late father, I was blowed if I was doing that again. So I rented crates when I moved. Also, if something goes wrong on moving day with the completion then your stuff can go into storage in the crates. I rented crates for 8 weeks initially and returned them after about 5 or 6 weeks when I had finished unpacking them and got a bit of a rebate.

I got my crates from here: https://www.cratehire-uk.co.uk/rent-a-crate/

The UK gets more tornados, per square mile, than any country on Earth, it's just they're generally small and generally in places without human habitation like the North Sea or Birmingham.

I'd quite like it if regular small tornadoes were part of the English weather system. (The fun type, not the dangerous type.)

Like, you're out on the local high street and suddenly a tornado materialises and moves down the street and everyone cringes back into the shop doorways and stuff and a couple of awnings get ripped from the store fronts and are dramatically flung hundreds of feet in the air and then the tornado dissipates as quickly as it began and everyone stands around for a bit brushing rainwater off themselves and going: "Ooh, did you see that, came straight out of nowhere, didn't it!" and then everyone goes back to getting on with their day again.

It'd be cosy :3:

It is very telling that instead of even considering that maybe cops should stop raping people or enabling rapists, their immediate response had been that rape victims should try running away or maybe try calling around until they find a cop who doesn't want to rape and kill them

You’re “supposed” to freeze them but I avoid that by moving them to larger and larger enclosures, and giving them away. You can control breeding in some species by keeping them a bit drier/cooler than they should be.

Given how poisonous potato fruits are this has always struck me as a remarkably bad idea. For “incomprehensible questions in science class” I submit Rebecca Gibson, who in a-level biology demanded to know how can a penguin breathe water, if it’s not a reptile like she said?

It's all just really sad. Normally I can just look at bleak poo poo and manage a hollow 'lmao' but just seeing the indifference from the authorities, literally saying 'well if she had just run away from the policeman she would have been completely fine' and the knowledge that both parties will go ahead with demanding more police to protect us from the police is heavier than normal. gently caress sake

Moving stuff - contact local firms, some will have ability to do long range (big trunker lorry), and will do all the packing/unpacking for you faster than you will believe. Containers - forget it. They are like gold these days, you will be looking at obscene prices.

It's incredible how badly they've hosed the response here - and sadly instructive of just how completely insulated they normally are from criticism. All they needed to do was the normal "Bad apples, lessons learned, policies will be updated" poo poo (and obviously not actually changed anything) and the usual suspects would have just greased the ramp for them out of the news cycle. Instead they've come up with a bunch of poo poo that even the whitest liberals are going "Wait what?". It's hard even to pick a highlight, but "wave down a bus" is, I think, my particular favourite because it reveals even Plod don't believe that ringing 999 is going to end well and buses at least have cameras and witnesses and stuff.
