Happy birthday, Nat! I've spent most of today playing Dread, and it is very much a sink or swim experience; sad to say I've been doing a lot more sinking than swimming. Hoping you and Tea have a better go of it than I've been having.

Edit: that's not to say I haven't been having fun, I have, it's just the game can be a bit brutally unforgiving at points, and I just haven't been playing a lot of Metroidvanias recently, so I've got a lot of rust that needs to be shaken off on top of getting used to the controls.

The actual melee counter timing is meant to be, while not impossible, so difficult not even the best players can do it reliably (which would basically trivialize the EMMIs), so it's basically just a desperate measure to try when you're out of better options.

Yeah, I think I've seen it mentioned elsewhere that the timing windows for the two counter opportunities (one for the grab, one for the stab) are both insanely short and also slightly randomized so that you can't reliably react to the animations to escape. You basically have to either get insanely lucky or not get caught to begin with, which can become frustrating given how much the game expects you to lean on the melee counter both for killing random poo poo while exploring or during boss fights.

I hated the Yellow E.M.M.I. so goddamn much. I don't think any of the other ones gave me nearly as much trouble as that one did.
