It looked pretty neat until I found what they're asking for it. Preorders are $370 for the console + trackpad/paddle controller.

Random Stranger posted:

Don't use 100 yen = 1 USD. It's about 120 yen = 1 USD. Of course, that means that getting the system and paddle controller is just over $300 so that sticker shock is still there.

The Astro City mini went on steep discount after its release so I'm gambling on being able to get this at half price a few months from now.
Yeah there's definitely been a climb in the pricing of these multi-game mini arcades from the Neo Geo ($110) to the Sega Astro City ($150) to the Capcom Retro Station ($200) to now the Taito Egret II ($370).

It's a maturing market so not only are they making them out of higher quality parts (remember the Neo Geo Mini having a tiny joystick-shaped console analog nub instead of an arcade stick and membrane buttons?) and packing into them more features, plus everything electronic is in a shortage and stuff costs more to make and ship now, so no surprise.

Also without the rotating screen, Sega will sell you 2 entirely different Astro City Minis for the horizontal and vertical games, rather than Taito selling you more games via extra controllers that come with SD cards, so you have to factor that into the equation as well.

Definitely sounds like they're using the genesis roms, the genesis/md socs are cheap and plentiful

edit: and that would explain why there's no MK1, cause MK1 on the genesis looked like dog poo poo

If they can come in at under half the price of a replicade, I'd consider it. Gameplay has never been the focus of these things, let's be honest

I do like the look of that cocktail countercade, but I have way too many loving pacman things already. If your friends and family know you like old arcade games, it's pacman for christmas for the rest of your life

I'm glad there's an active and extensive modding community for Arcade 1Up machines that makes it easy to fix most of the deficiencies, if you don't mind tinkering.

Next week I plan to put together the new Pac-man Legacy Edition I bought last year.

Later this summer I'll put in a Jamma 60-in-1 conversion kit and throw a 1980's themed game party.

I kind of feel like they were getting their poo poo together after trial and error with their initial products, such as realizing why actual arcades had clear acrylic protective layers, but then at some point the rising costs of everything forced them to raise prices and cut corners and welp here we are

The only Arcade1up product I want is the Defender partycade. It’s a good size for the space I’m working with, I appreciate that it can be door or table mounted as well as wall mounted, and it’s got a close enough control setup for Defender that non-dedicated hardware can’t match.

Also nobody in Australia stocks it, anywhere and when I’ve asked after it I’ve just been told “oh we haven’t been allocated any stock from the distributor and don’t know if we’ll ever get any” which sucks rear end.

Arcade1ups were pretty great on the $200-$300 price range. I was pretty pumped to get the Mortal Kombat one to relive my youth, and I modded the Street Fighter one into a pretty sweet MAME cabinet.

Then they started moving away from what made them good, being cost effective sub par arcade machines. To me, $300 is the sweet spot for cost for them, anything more and you might as well look at building your own machine or buying one for not too much more.

Bought one of those atGames ALU Minis, because after seeing it mentioned upthread I took a long hard look at the little nook next to my fireplace and realized it was the perfect size for it. It's just over 19 inches wide, and I have several decent little barstools.

That, and damned PayPal introduced that pay in 4 plan. It's going to be the death of me.

My ALU Mini is really cool, I've made a CoinOpsX thumb drive and been playing with that a bit, plus it just looks amazing sitting in the little fireplace alcove. The sound bar along the top sounds really good, too. I have an LED strip lighting the alcove, and I'm thinking of getting a neon (or fake "neon") sign to go up on the wall behind it.

The streaming feature works pretty well, even if there's a bit of an input delay that kind of throws me off. I played some Huntdown and it amazing on a real arcade cabinet, since it feels like a Contra-like game straight out of the 90s.

I really liked Arcade1up when they first launched. They were low quality, sure, but getting an arcade cabinet for $200-$300 was amazing for nostalgia.

Then they slowly started raising the prices without improving the quality to justify the cost.

I would definitely second that you're going to need to replace the buttons and joystick, especially if it was a demo model
