AND WE'RE BACK!!! For the first time since you could go to a pub and not worry about catching a deadly virus, Doctor Who is back for another season! Not just any season, mind you - for the first time in 35 years, the whole of the season will follow one story, entitled Flux. What is the Flux? Well, that's a very good question. We've got Cybermen! We've got Sontarans! We've got Weeping Angels! We've got Ood! Hell, we'll even throw in this mix of Yorkshire terrier, Wookie, and Sandinista for no additional charge!

The season begins on Halloween and lasts six weeks (blame this on COVID-19, not Chibnall):

Chapter One: The Halloween Apocalypse
Chapter Two: War of the Sontarans
Chapter Three: Once, Upon Time
Chapter Four: Village of the Angels
Chapter Five: Survivors of the Flux
Chapter Six: The Vanquishers

There's also the New Year's Special, which will air....on New Year's Day. The previous thread can be found here. Now, the formalities.

NO SPOILERS gently caress it, I don't know what we do about spoilers now
We have a designated spoiler thread, but under Chibnall the amount of spoilers have dried like the lake in that one episode. Use your best judgement. Episode titles can be spoiler-y, so use discretion when discussing episodes yet to air. For example, 'Hide' doesn't spoil anything, but 'OH poo poo IT'S THE DALEKS' does.

With that being said, as soon as HRH the Q is able to watch it, it is no longer a spoiler. That means anyone not watching on BBC One should leave the thread and not return until they've watched the most recent episode - that is, unless you don't care about the Earth-shattering, canon-defying, poor-choiceingest developments!

WHERE DO I START?
The Woman Who Fell to Earth is a good starting point, as the current Doctor makes her first starring appearance there alongside her current companions. This is not to discount Doctors 9-12, but so far their stories have not made a major point in the tenure of Whittaker's Doctor. If you want to watch the original series, there are plenty of places to start. You COULD start with An Unearthly Child and watch everything in chronological order. You could also watch individual serials of all the Doctors and determine which you like the best. Keep in mind, don't shotgun a whole Hartnell or Troughton in one go, or else you'll get complacent. Those 60's episodes are meant to be seen one at a time, and if you only just rented the DVD, wait a few hours between episodes.

The most popular serials for the original series you can jump into are:

First Doctor: An Unearthly Child, The Aztecs
Second Doctor: The Tomb of the Cybermen, The Enemy of the World
Third Doctor: Spearhead from Space, Carnival of Monsters
Fourth Doctor: Pyramids of Mars, The Robots of Death
Fifth Doctor: Kinda, Frontios
Sixth Doctor: Vengeance on Varos, Revelation of the Daleks
Seventh Doctor: Dragonfire, Remembrance of the Daleks

WHERE CAN I WATCH DOCTOR WHO?
BritBox is the place to watch almost every episode of the original series. In addition, you're in luck if you're an American, as you can watch the original run of Doctor Who on honest-to-goodness TV (Retro TV and some PBS stations)!

For the current run:

ON TELEVISION
UK - BBC One (first run), W
USA - BBC America (first run), most PBS stations
Canada - CTV Sci-Fi Channel
Australia - ABC TV Plus (first run), ABC ME

STREAMING
UK - BBC iPlayer, Virgin TV Go
USA - HBO Max, AMC+ (until six months after first airing)
Canada - Crave
Australia - Stan, BritBox

SHOULD I BUY THE DVDs AND BLU-RAYs?
Just for the bonus features alone.

THE ALL-NEW GUIDE TO BIG FINISH
There are literally THOUSANDS of Doctor Who and Doctor Who-related audio dramas released by Big Finish Productions. In previous threads, I would pour over all the individual lines and describe them. With the great restructure of Big Finish lines, though, I have to adapt. So, here are some bullet points:

-Doctors 1-12 have their own individual lines now, although obviously the first three Doctors are not played by Hartnell, Troughton, and Pertwee. Here's a handy guide: if it's current series Doctor Who, "Adventures" means it's the actual actors, while "Chronicles" means it's not.
-The Companion Chronicles & the Early Adventures generally do not feature the Doctor, and some of them are essentially audiobooks with sound effects. Check the cast list if you want to know which is which.
-If you have ever asked "what about <random character x>?", boy are you in luck! There are so many spin-offs featuring characters both familiar and unfamiliar that you can't swing a dead cat without hitting a series that makes you say "THEY got a series?" Some are good, some are bad, most are unremarkable.
-Everyone has a taste, so don't rely on other people's opinions. For example, I don't care for or about Charlotte Pollard and her spin-off, but some people do! Some crazy people enjoy the story Nekromanteia - you do you!

THE DISCORD
Here it is. The future is now!

FINALLY, let's take a look back....all the way to ten years ago! Some folks were celebrating Ian Chesterfield, and this comment came up:

:siren: THE 2021 DOCTOR WHO THREAD SECRET SANTA! :siren:

Yes, it’s that time of the year again! I'm launching it a bit earlier this year because postal systems are already announcing they're going to be incredibly overloaded, so here's some extra time to beat the rush!

If you're new to this Secret Santa malarkey, we all throw our names into a hat, you receive a random name, and send that person a lovely gift of DOCTOR WHO goodies, toys, candy, maybe some booze (postage allowing), and all around a big ol' ball of holiday cheer! It's fun, trust me. No, really.

SIGNING UP:

1) First thing, sign up here: https://forms.gle/rG2pT2UAxy9MuJb77

If you find you are having problems, email me at doctorwhosecretsanta [at] gmail [dot] com
In the subject line, please include the tag [DWSS].

2) Post in this thread! Tell us what kinds of stuff you're into! Once Santas are assigned, we're all going to be trying to figure each other out, so some healthy conversation will help things go smoothly.

3) DEADLINES: The deadline for sign-ups is Monday November 8th! #SAVETHEDAY Assignments will go out shortly thereafter.

Try to have your gift mailed out by Friday December 10th

4) BUDGET: Somewhere in the $25-$30 (£20-25) range (before shipping). You're welcome to spend more, but that's no guarantee you'll get that much in return. Gag gifts are cool, but please include some kind of actual gift.

5) WORK ADDRESSES: Remember that these gifts will likely go out around the holiday break, so be mindful of which address you give me. If you have any concerns about packages being stolen from your doorstep, use the address of your work/friend/parents, just so long as it's cool with them.

God drat it, in the last thread I posted about how embarrassing 'Last of the Time Lords' was to watch with non-fan family, but looking at Jerusalem's episode list I realised I'd mixed it up with 'The End of Time'. Easy mistake to make, as they're both overblown and bad season-enders I have no desire ever to watch again, but 'The End of Time' was an entire power of worse (despite having Timothy Dalton) and I wanted to correct the record for the sake of my nerd credentials.

Honestly, if this just a standalone story rather than an attempt to further the Timeless Child mythos, I think there's more of a chance Chibnall will do something okay. I'm really not excited about the Timeless Child stuff. On one hand, I feel like it'd be best to retcon it/swerve it in another direction, on the other hand, this feels almost fundamentally unsalvageable to the point where I'd prefer to just ignore it, kind of like the 'Gwen Stacy hosed Norman Osborn and has his children' plotline in the Spider-man comics.

All I remember RTD saying is cracking a joke about how it turns out he did multi-Doctor stories after all because maybe everybody on the screen was actually secretly a mindwiped Doctor.
