Picked up the Count of Monte Cristo at my local library last week. This book is a thousand loving pages and nobody in it talks like a real person but its p good still. The key is to skim over all the passages where random frenchman is struck by what great morals and skill and knowledge this Dantes guy has and how cool he is because boy there is a loving lot of them. Striking it rich and using the money to seek vengeance on your enemies is definitely a conceit I like a lot though.

Dumas didn’t even write the whole thing and farmed out all the crazy C-plots to other writers working for him lol so yeah don’t feel bad about skipping the 50-page backstory about some dude who says hi to Dantes on the street

Yeah, actually, gamers in the house forever,
I opened a Gideon bible the other day to the part where you’re supposed to have the priest give your wife an abortion if you think she cheated on you—I didn’t realize that was in there (to be fair god will magically make the abortion potion not work if she was faithful (the priest switches it out I guess lol))

It was like reading someone's blog about their Minecraft playthrough, with some racism thrown in.

no man is an island, unless he's robinson crusoe

the fact that he still used a slave to thrive actually makes the analogy more fitting because it fits the "well, that part doesnt count" attitude that every bootstrapist espouses

Yeah, actually, gamers in the house forever,
i read THings Fall Apart freshman year of high school and hated it but maybe i was just stupid and should re-read it

i was in an advanced lit course in middle school and read Grapes of Wrath in 8th grade and it went WAY over my head what the hell. and i was a really advanced reader for my age (don't worry it amounted to nothing as an adult, like fishmech). but now it is probably my favorite novel.

we also read The Good Earth in 7th grade which likewise went over everyone's heads. like Grapes of Wrath it had a kind of weird breastfeeding scene. what the hell is with your reading picks Miss Jarzab
