It is a bit weird. Should be obvious to everyone that they would have had a week of bad press and by a months time the poll numbers would be back to the Tories on +10 or whatever.

It is weird that nobody ever seems to talk about the possibility of rejoining the single market or something. All the remainiac ultras talk about is rejoining, which is never going to happen, at least for a decade+. Seems like it would be an obvious thing for Starmer to push for that doesn't upset any of the people he actually gives a poo poo about. Maybe the idea is that the Tories will end up having to plump for the single market in the end once the contradictions of the NI stuff become untenable. That seems pretty optimistic that the Tories won't just blow everything up and enjoy CON+30 for the privilege.

He could pull the same bullshit angle as the Tories, claiming he could somehow get a deal to get in the single market and lose free movement, regardless of the reality.

By coincidence it happened to be Megatokyo’s 20th anniversary which probably made me feel older than anything else ever has.

Literally the only reason they won't do a mask mandate is because Tories won't follow it and will be photographed. As it is, they can at least attempt plausible deniability, as seen in that clip.

Yeah, Succession is amazing and everyone should be watching it. It’s borderline a UK product as well, it’s written by Jesse Armstrong who co-wrote Peep Show and The Thick Of It. And it is basically about how that extreme level of wealth annihilates your soul. I seem to remember that years ago someone here on SA who works with the super rich wrote a long post about it which came to similar conclusions.

I probably feel more sorry for Trump than Boris. Trump is probably a worse person, but he’s also basically deranged. He’s deeply mentally ill or even possibly neurologically compromised. Also, he’s widely and absolutely loathed by a good half of the nation, including much of the establishment. He might never face actual hardship in his life, but he’ll likely be ostracised from the circles he dearly wishes he could be in. He’s probably incapable of actually experiencing happiness, and he’ll be dead soon. Meanwhile, the most consequence Boris will face for his crimes will be not being able to be prime minister anymore. Maybe his party losing an election and falling out of power. The public will never truly turn on him, and a small blip at the moment aside, the establishment will always welcome him. He’ll be a bon vivant at garden parties and after-dinner speeches for the rest of his life. If he’s tossed out of Number 10 he’ll be back on whatever the new equivalent of Epstein’s island is by the end of the year. He’ll likely finish out his days, surrounded in his bed by (most of) his children, and maybe some of his mistresses, safe in the knowledge that he was a widely liked public figure, except by some weirdo crusties who don’t count. That’s the real pain of watching the Tories. Almost no politicians will face actual material consequences for their actions. But they won’t even face emotional consequences. They will be happy and content for the rest of their likely natural lives. Comrade Fakename fucked around with this message at 23:58 on Nov 23, 2021 |

therattle posted:Yes. I also think that he’s deeply unhappy and always will be. Do you think he’s unhappy? At the moment, probably. He certainly didn’t want to be PM under these circumstances. But generally? He strikes me as a man completely content in his life. He’s never had to try for anything, everyone he meets like him, and for some reason he has an endless parade of plump young would-be mistresses available for him. You have never been as sure of anything in your life as Boris is that everything, most importantly himself, is doing great.
