Looking back, it was a band in its prime, in a country just starting a precipitous descent. They were simply better times, before the internet hosed everything up.

For some reason nobody was willing to let their kids wander up the driveway of the guy who was throwing pavers and rubber mallets around and had rammstein cranked up on the stereo to trick and treat last night.

Only visit was a friend who chatted for a bit while his kids annoyed other people for treats to save walking up too many hills

I was at my parent's in the boonies attempting to fix my dad's computer (hard drive appears to have forgotten what a "BCD" is, according to the error) without wiping the entire drive, and my wife was sick in bed at our house, so porch light was off for Halloween. No idea how TnT went - our neighborhood has a fair number of kids, so I hope they were out having fun. It was a great mild night for it (low 60s and clear.)
I know *someone* had fun. Neighbor catty-corner to us got TP'd.
Because of dad's PC and my wife's reunion dinner on Saturday, I sadly did not get the rowdier exhaust on the Crown Vic. Sorry to disappoint.

I do occasionally listen to the local alternative rock station, now that there is one again, but even it can get repetitive. They at least play older stuff as well as new stuff.

A real bust of tricks and treaters last night, maybe 20? In past years I've had 100 or so, but the cul de sac crew set up a fire pit in the street and had a few beers, which ruled.

After a Halloween weekend adult party with a bottle of Smirnoff, and a Broncos game with a friend who pushes the beers, I'm considering a version of sober November. The biggest problem is number keeps going up (on the scale). I think I can knock 5-8 lbs off and be able to fit into all of my pants again, instead of just a few stretchy pairs.

Engine swap done. Total shitfest. little over 20 hours of work. Everything that could fight, did. Stuck glowplugs in the new engine, found a cross threaded injector line and broken off exhaust stud at the block, ugh, engine didn't want to stab the transmission, motor mounts that didn't want to bolt together, clutch was frozen, it goes on. Its one of the most brutal engine swaps I've ever done. Wrapped up just in time for sleet.

This truck's engine has always been trash. I'm glad that we opted to repower rather than try and fix this one. There's no fixing it without a full teardown then having a machineshop sleeve and linebore the block. I can't get half the parts for a rebuild anyway. New runs a w e s o m e for the little I've driven it at the time of this posting.

Cyl #7. I'm able to move the piston around in the bore. the crown looks damaged. Close inspection will reveal that there's valve and cylinder head precup marks on it.
part number and type letter are worn off the piston.

Bore is excessively worn. There's an extreme groove between where the ring rides and where it does not. A finger nail catching is worth 5 thousandths of an inch of wear. This is many multiples of that. The 3 bores I could check were like this with this being the worst.

did everyone make it through Halloween okay?

We got a surprise hoard of trick or treaters.
Last year we didn't get any and before the pandemic we had like 6. I still bought 18lbs of candy. Made goodie bags with an assortment of choices.
I only used like half the candy to make the bags because I didn't expect to have more than a couple dozen visitors.

BOY WAS I WRONG.

Kids descended on our 'hood like loving locusts.

There were dozens of groups of dozens of kids. Literally hundreds. They all showed up at once. It was CHAOS!
I was scrambling to refill our bucket with candy at the same time I had neighbors showing up asking if I had spare candy to give out.

I want to eat my chicken.
I was really expecting a light turnout in my hood, but I was pleasantly surprised.

My son is only 1.5, so he's right on the cusp of caring/remebering - My wife and I had a discussion about it and kinda came up with the fact that we were going to go to the neighborhood thing rather than doing a big outlay like we had done in the past.

It was kinda bitter sweet - our halloweens have always been a big deal ever since we moved here - there was a big time attraction in our neighborhood, a guy set up a massive display with little animatronic skeletons that was really fun and attracted people from all over the city, so me and a handful of other neighbors exploited that and did other fun layouts - I aligned myself to being the "scary" house - Typically I'd have a jump scare, and fun vintage themed displays - our friends would come and we'd make a night of it.

in 2019 our friends from New Zealand came and it was really a great time, my wife was pregnant and we all kind of knew that this would be our last "big" hoorah for awhile - It was such a good time, the food, the laughs, scaring the crap out of kids, then parading old cars thru the hood - it was just a really great time. Sadly my friend from NZ passed away at the onset of covid from something not related - he was 43 years old. We attended his funeral via the internet when our son was a few weeks old. It was also a time when NZ was not locked down but we were, so it was extra emotional to see people congregated sharing stories of our friend while we were watching this thru our TV - it was like a portal to another world. Last year was a wash, but I was kinda emotional this year.

LMAO no poo poo. I don't listen to the radio a ton, but how in the gently caress, with the entire decades of 60s-70s-80s (and even 90s) to choose from, it's literally the same bands over and over again, and worse, maybe 5 songs each between them.

~212 kids here. Planed on ~300 but it was cold.

My mom has a neighbor that goes totally ~all out~ and decorates their yard over 4-6 weeks and the kids come in droves. It's literally a traffic jam on their street. I think she typically gets something like 1000+ kids or something. They had a friend dress up as freddy kruger scare the poo poo out of them (and parents) as they were walking up the driveway. I suspect some kids get nightmares.

Dr appointment today. Concurs it's likely fasciitis. Gave me some different stretches to try. I told him I have probably the hardest work out of my life tomorrow (Black belt fitness test) and he chucked and said yeah, good luck with that lol.

Good news, he said my health is great. My blood pressure is well in the normal range, blood work is great (even cholesterol), heart appears to be in fantastic shape (had an echo-cardiogram). I don't really drink alcohol anymore so that's fine. Don't smoke. About the only thing I have left is if I want to tackle my diet and lose 10-20 lbs would be great, but he knows I am very fit, which, coming from a Dr to a guy who's always been chunky and not the most active gave me the warm fuzzies :3:

He's setting up a consult with a dietician and see if we can clear the last hurdle. Hopefully my body can hold together a few more years.

Yeah next year I'm going all out. Gonna put candy shooting sentry guns on the roof and dress the drones up as UFOs. Laser lights and spooky sounds and chainsaws and equal amounts of chaos to throw right back at the droving hordes.

I'll probably also dig a couple graves in the front yard because it coincides with that time of the year where I till in fresh soil and replant grass seed.

I kinda feel bad not doing any decorating this year but I mean I was sick all week and also was expecting like 6-12 visitors anyway.

Radio is nice when you don't want to have to think about what music to put on

KEXP out of Seattle is the one good radio station I've found, because the DJs can pick their own music instead of being a front-end for a shuffled playlist

Our new neighborhood only has a handful of houses and from what I've been able to tell, the vast majority are empty-nesters at this point (we only know of kids for sure at two houses, and only one of those has elementary-aged kids). So we didn't do any real decorating and instead went to my mom's. Which is also heavily empty-nest but connected to neighborhoods that still have younger families in them. There weren't as many houses lit up as there were when I did it 30 years ago, but still enough for the kiddo to get a pretty full bag. Definitely helped by the one house that clearly had some high-schoolers hanging out handing out candy because they threw four fistfuls of candy in her bag before she could finish "or treat".
