Oh you can... my parents got a turkey dinner from a steakhouse chain (mistake #1) for about the same; they said it was horrible.

Kerbey Lane is a local cafe chain (used to be 24/7 until COVID hit :sigh:) - their food is generally pretty solid, if not a little on the spendy side. Their Kerbey Queso is amazing. :swoon:

A question for the Thanksgiving havers - is mashed potato a special Thanksgiving dish that you don't really have any other time, or just a regular dish that you have other times but especially on Thanksgiving? I've seen some social media posts kind of implying the former which would be weird to me but doesn't seem right?

American here - Mashed potatoes are as ubiquitous here as dinner rolls; all steakhouses and most comfort food-type restaurants will have them on the menu. They're common on the dinner table paired with red meat dishes like meatloaf. The only dishes really specific Thanksgiving is the turkey itself - usually people won't go all-out carving one up, compared to taking it sliced as lunch meat or ground up as a replacement for beef.

Cranberry sauce isn't really something you see much of outside of Thanksgiving either, same with pumpkin pie and stuffing/"dressing". Everything else is stuff you'll find year-round. You'll even find turkey plates often in BBQ places, sometimes in diners as well. You just don't get to carve a turkey except during Thanksgiving and Christmas, and you're unlikely to be able to buy a whole turkey except from October to December (you can usually get a [frozen] turkey breast year-round at most grocery stores, same with ground turkey, turkey bacon, etc). I don't really eat much turkey (not counting sandwiches) outside of the holidays though; chicken is easier to come by.

Mashed potatoes are a bit labor intensive to make (by hand anyway - my mom always used a mixer, I refuse to do that), and not healthy... but so, so delicious. Steak, meatloaf, chicken, any fried meats (fried chicken, chicken fried steak, chicken fried chicken, etc), salisbury steak, chopped steak, etc all go very well with them.

I fix this when I need a fast meal that's really filling, except I make a good bit more gravy than what that recipes makes (just need to add more broth and a little more cornstarch slurry).

Thanksgiving is a time of seriously excessive eating; this is the first time I can remember not going back for seconds or thirds, and I usually gorge myself so bad that I can barely stand up for the rest of the day. We had breakfast just a few hours before, though.

There's a whole stick of butter already in the potatoes when I make them. :getin: Milk, cream, or half & half too.

Chives go great with potatoes in general, though I associate them more with a baked potato (butter, cheese, bacon, chives).

Bacos go great on mashed potatoes too, and/or a metric fuckassload of garlic and butter. Or hot sauce. Or Cajun seasoning. Or whatever, they're just starch substrate basically, it's a pandemic no rules, put whatever the gently caress you want on there that makes them taste amazing.

As a non American I always thought pumpkin pie was weird as hell, up until I actually tried it, totally underrated and I don't understand why you people didn't export that along with your cheeseburgers.

On the other hand we get to enjoy the glory of a steak and cheese pie daily, so swings and roundabouts I guess.

I LOVE what is known here as 'Deb' which is powered instant mash. I would trade for it with buddies out of our ration packs. Just needs 'all the salt' and tomato sauce.

I used to provide that as a side regularly. Easy, cheap and delicious.

Real mashed pots at home are only for company. Just a bit too much work for a regular meal. Of course we're only a couple, if we had kids it might be more of a Sunday dinner thing too.

Yep, instant mashed is good for when you're lazy. I have trouble making real mashed potatoes, because I never know when to stop. I always make a huge pot, even if it's only a couple people. I just start chopping potatoes up and keep going.

But I got a real potato masher a few months back and that is such an improvement over mashing with whatever implement I can find.

Pumpkin pie, truly made from scratch (IE: Killing a pumpkin, not out of a can) brings it up another 25% or so. It is really hard to put your finger on what it is exactly, but it's absolutely worth the effort.

I make mashed potatoes all the drat time, because it's so easy and one of my favorite foods ever.

Boil potatoes (peel 'em first if you want, I usually leave the peel on), then pour off water, mash to bits right in the pot, add butter and milk as necessary, season with salt and pepper.

When I'm feeling fancy, I put the pot back on the stove when I add the butter and let it brown up a bit, before continuing.

You're not wrong at all. I usually just steam veggies, grill them, or pan fry them in a little stir fry or fried rice situation. The idiosyncratic thing I do is roast then which I think is about as much work, or time at least. Cut, oil, roast, eat.

My girlfriend and I did the mashed potatoes for her families dinner Thursday; we roasted whole heads of garlic until the cloves were soft and squeezed them right into the riced potatoes just before mashing them up with butter and cream. Was spectacular. An uncle did a $280 prime rib the size of a pony keg on his smoker and we had freshly made horseradish. So, so good.

I did roast potatoes but made sweet potato casserole for the mashed up carb needs. Pressure cook the sweet potatoes, mash them up with butter, brown sugar and pecans then let roast it for a bit and for the last 15 minutes over in marshmallows and singe the top with a torch.

Mushrooms, MSG, liquid aminos, Worcestershire sauce, anything you can use to add umami to dishes will be your friend for any dish where you think it's just missing that certain something.

And spices, definitely be generous with spices. The same goes for toppings and flavorful oils as finishing touches. Black sesame oil is pure liquid gold.

Would recommend to most of the people here who wouldn't mind eating better and also doing something for the planet at the same time.

Except not Worcestershire sauce as its got anchovies in! (and if you knowingly feed meat based stuff to a veggie without speaking to them first you're a twat)

Hendersons relish (or "Hendos" as it's known in northern England) is the preferred replacement. https://www.hendersonsrelish.com/, tho i don't know what its worldwide distribution is like...

True, though none of the vegetarians I know seem bothered by it. The vegans avoid it, of course.

A mix of liquid aminos and soy sauce gets you close.

Tell her to check the ingredients on everything because its sometimes totally random what is in things!
I'm 20+ years in and still get caught out by things all the time. I found this week that one of my local breweries still use isinglass in their stout and porter and also found a pack of cheese and spinach ravioli which was not veggie.
sweets/candy especially she needs to check properly before deciding she wants to eat them, especially anything gummy, chewy, fluffy or colourful which has a good chance of containing beef or pork gelatine or some weird colourings.
I don't know what you get in the US, but over here skittles were the only mainstream veggie/vegan safe sweet until the last 12 months when more stuff has started changing recipe.
Also, chips/crisps are loving random.

There are some bangin' non-meat substitutes on the market here now. Every since the beyond stuff came out we have loads of competitors too. You should be able to make anything in your normal routines using those without any effort.

Really? Our dog gets pumpkin puree with his food for some digestive issues, so we end up going through 4-5 small cans a month. Other than a brief period at the beginning of Covid times, local groceries are usually well stocked with canned pumpkin. And pumpkin pies are usually available as well, though they might be the frozen variety rather than "fresh" (aka were frozen, thawed for display)

That instant pot recipe I posted earlier makes it stupid easy. Chicken broth in the bottom, chicken breast, some carrots on top of the chicken, then a mixing bowl with some cut up potatoes on top of the carrots. 15 minutes later you're mixing in butter, cream, and salt and mashing the potatoes, while waiting for your cornstarch slurry to turn the broth into gravy.
