He cherry picks the data that supports his proposition because he's an arrogant narcissist who couldn't possibly be wrong. This is also why one of the more popular theories of why Dr. Strange needed to look through so many potential timelines to get the actual outcome of the movies was to look for a timeline where both Thanos and Tony Stark die and stay dead. If he just wanted to stop Thanos, finding any way to distract Star Lord for 15 seconds would be enough. But that wouldn't end the threat of Tony Stark loving around with the Infinity Gauntlet.
