Tails of iron was a teeny bit laggy and unenjoyable last time I played it on the switch, did they optimize it a little in the latest patches?

Also, my wife saw an ad for Switch Sports and asked for it. Considering it's the most gamey thing that ever caught her interest I think I'm gonna get it. Is it good? Never played the wii ones and the only sport minigames I've ever got were ps1/2 olympics joypad destroyers. Wait, maybe even some ancient ones on a C64.

Wii Sports was phenomenal back in the day for parties and playing with people who never touch games. It still has the same basic charm and accessibility. Well, at least the staples like Tennis and Bowling. Can’t speak much for the newer types of games included but you could certainly do worse than have it kicking around in your library.

Thanks to whoever mentioned Tails of Iron 2 - it lead to me grabbing the first one. Good game. At first I regretted playing on normal difficulty but a few more deaths and I got used to the combat enough. Finished main story and now working through the post game content. Enjoyable - downside is it does like to crash every now and then. Most annoyingly was when I had just beat the final boss and it was travelling to the main area and then froze up. Got to beat the final boss again.

04-23-2024 Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes ($49.99 rated E)

Eiyuden is the Suikoden spiritual successor Kickstarter from the original co-creator (who died earlier this year). If you enjoyed playing Suikoden decades ago I highly recommend it based on the beta.

Planet of Lana's aggressively okay. Once you see the first round of puzzle structures it doesn't really mix it up for the game for the most part. Big warning ahead do not play if you are photosensitive. It's mostly fine, but gently caress me is the final boss headache-inducing with how much flashing colours are used.

iirc, wasn't Freedom Planet the one that started as a Sonic Fangame, got DMCA'd, or a legal talking-to or something, and they rebuilt it into their own thing?

They didn’t get hit with legal action, they just decided to make it into a proper game.
The Sonic inspiration is very very obvious but it’s not a 1:1 clone, Freedom Planet has a fair share of unique mechanics of its own and is a lot more action-focused than classic Sonic. There’s a bit of Gunstar Heroes DNA in there with the enemies and setpieces.

2's kinda :nallears:for me, because it traded exploring a whole mansion for a more mission-based structure across several and loses the atmosphere of the original in the process imo.

Luigi's Mansion 3 fixes all the issues with 2 and is a fantastic game, go play it.

Two is mission based because that's a more ideal format for a handheld. Also the more ideal format for a 40 year old dad with a demanding job.

My partner and I played the heck out of the Scarescraper mode on LM2, and thanks to the download play feature of the 3DS we only ever bought one copy too, haha. Literally hundreds of hours sunk into that. We were amped when LM3 came out, but that game's Scarescraper mode never scratched that same itch. I guess we'll see with the re-release of LM2 if it was us or the game that changed. But yeah, LM2 will always hold a special place in my memories even though I couldn't tell you a thing about the single player mode, though I guess I did play through it all at some point.

Freedom Planet 2 is an improvement in every way except you need to beat the game to unlock that mode. Tbf, you can skip every cutscene and the story feels like a love-letter to stupid 90s kids shows instead of a tone deaf embarassing hosed up nightmare. There's also a lot of structural changes that made it necessary - you get to choose the order for most levels, there's a world map with shops and hubs and different equipment.

It also feels way different from a Sonic game than the first, but it is very easy to recommend to anyone that likes momentum based action platformers. If it runs well it'll be a day one purchase for me, it's the sort of game that I really like to play on the go every once in a while.

Edit: the villian in Freedom Planet 2 looks like Freiza and is written like a Sailor Moon villian arc iirc. So very stupid and shallow, but tonally consistent with a pretty clear look and style.
In the first game every scene was made by a different writer that took the project too ssriously, but also put in no effort. So a level may end with the girls having a happy slumber party, or escaping prison, or hitting up a casino or being horribly tortured. But would be 10 loving minutes long to build a world so tonally inconsistent that Shadow the Hedgehog couldn't find a place there.
