splatoon 2 has a fun co-op mode but for some reason they only let you play it for certain hours of the day

hopefully 3 will expand on that mode and remove the stupid time restriction

A lot of stuff is that way without us realizing it.

I've always heard that they don't make 16gb, 32gb, 64gb phones. They make 64gb phones then physically limit the memory because it's cheaper to produce one thing and break 2/3 of them than produce three things.

They don't generally do that for storage, but something similar is widely done for processors. Intel/AMD/Nvidia only make 2-4 different pieces of silicon for a dozen different SKUs, so the lower SKUs are more capable chips with parts of them artificially disabled. Sometimes they are able to salvage defective chips by disabling the defective areas, but often they are just straight up hacking pieces off a fully working chip.

I haven't seen any indication that Hot Coffee is actually functional in the remaster the way it was in the originals (disabled but possible to enable with save editing)

The source code for the Hot Coffee scripts is just lying around in the game package

Playing the switch in handheld mode with the default joycons is causing me hand pain, especially in my right thumb. What are some good replacement joycons, particularly for any folks who have had a similar issue.

The usual suggestions are the Satisfye Grips (cheap shell that goes around the Joycons to make them more ergonomic) or Hori Split Pad Pro (actual replacement joycons that are closer to a standard controller cut in half)

The Satisfye has the side benefit of keeping the full Joycon functionality too (the Split Pad is missing motion controls, HD rumble and NFC)

It's still relevant, the exploit in early Switches is in the bootloader that runs before the Switch OS even starts, and there's no way for Nintendo to patch the bootloader

Is kinda funny that Nintendo's technically never stopped using carts (in their handhelds) and suddenly storage has come around to carts being ideal again.

the cost is still an issue, lots of publishers cheap out on cart capacity and have a mandatory download to fill in the data that didn't fit on the cart

switch carts are available up to 32gb but few publishers are willing to pay for those, so games larger than 16gb usually get the "partial download" treatment

what does "unpatched" mean in this context? a switch that wasn't connected to the internet since 2017??

it means it's an early hardware revision - those early switches have an exploit that cannot be patched by nintendo, so it doesn't matter what firmware they're on

many original grey-box switches are unpatched, but red-box, switch lite and OLED models are all patched

patched switches started appearing around august 2018, so if you bought yours in the first year of release it's most definitely hackable

So I do the "counting" thing where you add up the size of the hints and the required blanks to figure out which hints on the board have the least number of potential placements--say two "variants". At that point, with a computerized solver it's pretty cheap to make a copy of the board and walk done the solution branches for both variants, and just throw away the work for the invalid branch once you've determined that it's invalid. The problem is that many subsequent operations will be the same in both branches so you end up duplicating the effort even though only one of them will yield a valid solution. Compound that with many guesses and the work gets pretty inefficient quickly.

Whereas when you solve them by hand you want to delay making a "guess" for as long as possible because unwinding from a wrong guess is much more difficult. Still, it would be beneficial to do that in a computerized solver because once you reach the point when (if) you're forced to guess, you're not putting in much extra work only to find an invalid solution.

I'm pretty sure Jupiter's puzzles are designed to be solvable without ever guessing, so a solver should be able to work through them sequentially without backtracking if it knows all the tricks

I only played S1 but IIRC guessing is never required in that one

Launch day (or first year-ish) Switches are easily softmodded but everything after that is a pain in the rear end requiring hardware mods so the early ones sell for a decent premium
