I still liked quite a bit of it, but I was constantly frustrated by getting a new powerup and thinking "Oh, I remember a few places I can use this!" only to be stuck by a blocked door when I tried to go backtrack.

I didn't end up doing item cleanup, or even checking out some of the very initial hot temperature zones, until literally the very end of the game because I was so funneled until that point.

NMS is still a bad game, there's just more stuff to do between you and the badness so you might forget it's bad for a while. Putting aside that NPC interactions are boring/frustrating/repetitive and that exploring the procedural planets isn't fun, the inventory system is a disaster. The whole game is managing this inventory, buying slots for it, moving items around in it, moving items between your suit and ship inventories and it's just miserable. You're out mining stuff and your mining gun is out of mining juice. Your inventory has juice in it, but your gun won't just pull from the inventory. You instead need to open the inventory, find the juice, pick up the juice and put the juice in your gun. Now you also need to do this for your life support, shields, weapons, jetpack etc. Also you have to do it for your ship's systems when you're in the ship instead of walking, just in case you thought you could escape the inventory screen.

Same reason why I dislike Skyward Sword (the worst Zelda game), Super Mario Party (doesn't have the magic of the Nintendo 64/GameCube entries), or Bayonetta 2 (isn't crafted as much as the first and being designed around witch time makes the game bad).

If consensus is that the game is bad, then it's bad. If I think differently then I'm in the wrong and thus I reevaluate my opinion on it.

The Switch Final Fantasy sale I’ve been anticipating for months is finally here. All of the FF8 discussion in here while VG played through 8 combined with me needing brain dead simple games to play right now convinced me that PS1 era Final Fantasy is the thing for me.

I’m not considering 7, I’ve played it too many times.

I played 8 to the end when it was new, but never finished it because I leveled 3 characters to 100 and left the other 3 in the teens, which made the final area a major challenge.

I played 9 when it was new but never finished it because I got distracted by finally getting the internet at home

I’m gripped with indecision.

Reasons for 8
-like the idea of tinkering with the draw system to break the hell out of my characters. I was a dumb kid last I played and barely understood the system
-triple triad
-the music

Reasons for 9
-I like having a prescribed party for much of the game
-simpler system (I think?) with getting skills from gear
-I remember liking the characters

Please hit me with compelling arguments for or against either of these games.
