Welcome to the 2021 MLS Playoff thread. Wooo! More soccer! And this marks the first time no California team has made it to the playoffs (thanks hilarious Galaxy OG + missed call for SKC that gave me ALL of the schadenfreude, you da real MVPs). Format is pretty much the same as the last two year; single-game knockout tournament (goodbye forever home-and-home series) hosted by the higher seeded team, 7 teams in each conference with the #1 seed on each side (New England, Colorado) getting a bye, MLS Cup hosted by the team highest in the Supporter's Shield standings. And in a stroke of dumb luck, the playoff field is exactly the top 14 teams in the Shield standings. Supporter's Shield Standings Portland Timbers NYCFC Times and TV Info Quarter Finals NYRB @ Philly - Sat 11/20, 2:30PM EST, Univision/mlssoccer.com/local broadcasts - Jacob Glesnes only scores bangers. Philly wins the rock fight over the Red Bulls 1-0 AET with the latest goal in league history (123'). Atlanta @ NYCFC - Sun 11/21, 3PM EST, ABC - After a rather dismal first half, NYCFC beat Atlanta 2-0 on goals within 4 minutes. Orlando @ Nashville - Tues 11/23, 8PM EST, FS1 - A beautiful solo run from Hany Mukhtar and an insurance tally deep in stoppage push Nashville past Orlando 3-1. Vancouver @ SKC - Sat 11/20, 5PM EST, UniMas/mlssoccer.com/local broadcasts - San Zusi returns after many years as SKC dumps Vancouver 3-1. Minnesota @ Portland - Sun 11/21, 5:30PM EST, ESPN - Sebastian Blanco goes HAM, Portland tops Minnesota 3-1. RSL @ Seattle - Tues 11/23, 10:30PM EST, FS1 - Bar none the worst match of the weekend. One team had zero shots after 120'...that team being RSL who win on penalties 6-5 after 0-0 FT.  Semi Finals Nashville @ Philadelphia - Sun 11/28, 5:30PM EST, ESPN - The two traded first half goals and nothing else for another 75 minutes. Thus we got possibly the worst set of PKs ever taken as Philadelphia beats Nashville 1-1 (2-0). Yes Virginia, Nashville didn't convert a single of their 4 attempts, with two saved and two sailing into row Z. NYCFC @ New England - Tues 11/30, 7:30PM EST, FS1 - New England needed NYC to go down to 9 players to get an equalizer in stoppage time...but a Sean Johnson save in PKs sees NYCFC advance 2-2 (5-4) Portland @ Colorado - Thurs 11/25, 4:30PM EST, FOX - A 90' scramble in the box yields heartbreak for the hosts as Portland takes out Colorado 1-0. Salt Lake @ Kansas City - Sun 11/28, 3PM EST, ABC - RSL continues to troll the whole loving league by knocking off both the #2 and #3 seeds, beating SKC 2-1 on a 91' winner. Conference Finals Salt Lake @ Portland - Sat 12/4, 6PM EST, FS1 - gently caress Portland (2-0) NYCFC @ Philadelphia - Sun 12/5, 3PM EST, ABC - Since Philly couldn't lose a cup final at home, they decided to lose a semifinal at home, falling 2-1 to NYCFC on a 88' defensive gaffe MLS Cup #4 NYCFC @ #4 Portland (Go Meteor) - Sat 12/11, 3PM EST, ABC - A goalkeeper fuckup gets cancelled out by a last gasp goal. To penalties it goes, and NYCFC prevails 4-2 after Sean Johnson saves Portland's first two attempts. Jump to Conference Semi-Finals / discussion on Seattle making GBS threads the bed.
