you're standing on a mountain ridge after a few hours of hiking. in one direction, there are signs of human activity: the road that brought you to the trailhead, a few houses nestled in clearings, tiny windmills line a low ridge, in the distance a small town lines the banks of a river. in the other direction, there is simply the wild, hills and valleys that continue on to a smudge of a horizon. walking one way will take you towards comfort and civilization, going the other will plunge you into the vast unknown, and for all you know you could keep walking forever and not encounter a single other person. it's mid-afternoon, there's enough light to make significant progress in either direction, but you don't have to decide just yet. you can remain here, for a while, perched between two possible but fundamentally unknowable futures, and simply take in what is.
