That's not uncommon, a lot of forums I used to visit 20 years ago all lost their regulars and either became empty or replaced with some other community. Well, he lost interest maybe 10 years ago or more and became an absentee landlord who would maybe storm in once a year to deal with issues he was otherwise paying no attention to in order to make them worse for everyone and then disappear again, which among other things is part of the reason we have had a revolving door of moderators for a long time. He was absolutely ousted, his Patreon and whatever went down to nothing inside of a couple of weeks. The site's heyday was pre-Reddit and I'm not surprised to learn he received a buyout offer at that time. I only learned what happened to him yesterday because I don't really read GBS.

From everything I've ever heard about Lowtax, I'm sure some severe depression was involved, to be layered over the series of abusive relationships and general self-destructive behavior.
