Can you expand a bit on this one? I wouldn't call it obscure or underground; Kosinski was a famous author, and The Painted Bird was his best-seller. Kosinski was obsessed with secrecy and control, both in his life and in his fiction -- you can see it most clearly in books like Steps and Cockpit, where the protagonist almost sociopathically manipulates everyone around him.
