I 100% agree. I have no idea how the expensive ads pay off for USAA. Hell, I think I actually qualify due to family, but I don't even consider it because I would actually feel guilty trying to cash in based on my family members (even if it was a discount).

From what I've heard, USAA has taken a real dive in quality lately. Possibly because they are spending a crap ton on advertising to no one and they've cut costs in other areas.

My boss was in the Navy and had USAA... Until he moved to the neighboring state and USAA wanted to double his car insurance premiums. He dropped them immediately and started talking to everyone else he knew was a vet (our IT department seems to have an unusually high number), and told them all to drop USAA too, so LOL, good job.

USAA is significantly more expensive than GEICO in FL and they refuse to quote match. I had them for auto insurance since 2006 and they were just like "nah, fam, peace" when I told them my GEICO quote.

A business targeting veterans having lovely pricing? As someone who grew up in an Airforce town, I'm shocked.

We have USAA and even with all the perks they're supposed to have for buying a home, they still couldn't match our local mortgage company when we bought. Other than that, they've been fine tho with the exception of running galaxy brain commercials that actively tell people they can't be a member

It's really dumb to have ads that say "gently caress you go away, potential customer."

They're just being USAA-holes.

It's not worth it to switch away from them for me but it's definitely not the same anymore, either.

Sorry for continuing the USAA derail, but how did they come about anyway? Seems like such an odd thing to make a business that purposefully limits itself to a really small part of the populace.

If it's anything like my university's credit union it's probably a bunch of military members who banded together to try to get some sensible finances going and it just grew and grew over time.

The latest advertising blitz is military-funded I suspect. They're probably having just as much of a hard time recruiting as all the other bottom-tier jobs are.

Bunch of vets in the 20's formed a mutual self-insurance association for their cars.

I remembered that GEICO stands for "Government Employees Incurance Company" and checked how they formed and LOL

Wikipedia posted:

GEICO was founded in 1936 by Leo Goodwin Sr. and his wife Lillian Goodwin to provide auto insurance directly to federal government employees and their families.[5] Since 1925, Goodwin had worked for USAA, an insurer who specialized in insuring only military personnel. He decided to start his own company after rising as far as a civilian could go in USAA's military-dominated hierarchy.

It sounds like they enforce heavy premiums on pip states (PIP is a state-mandated insurance coverage for auto related injuries). Both Kentucky and Florida have it and Ohio doesn't.

Florida's also one of the most litigious places in the modern world, and the courts are notoriously fond of punitive damages. There are probably insurance companies who deliberately price themselves out of that market to minimize risk. There are a couple of states like Florida and Michigan where deliberately avoiding business is actually a pretty viable strategy for a national-level insurance company.

Florida’s rates are crazy high compared to the rest of the nation anyway, but, no, USAA is not competitive with anyone in FL.

the amount of ad buys they do across live sports on a weekly basis is truly absurd. they’d do better lowering premiums and saving over $10,000,000/month unless, as suggested, they’re being subsidized by the pentagon

like you get to flex with your overpriced truck, nobody’s flashing their USAA policy
