The Dark Half has a lot of good elements that would have amounted to a good movie with better overall direction. Cut out at least 30 minutes, direct a bit more luridly, focus a bit on the bird thing and you got yourself a movie. Romero definitely can do all these things easily but he just somehow doesn’t. Shame. The ending rocked though.

Homicidal, like every Castle, benefits from Castle himself – I love his little intro and his pre-finale warning. Interesting how Gaspar Noe does the same thing in I Am Alone. The movie itself is a bit slow at the start but gets much more interesting halfway through. The twist isn’t particularly surprising, but there’s more tension and interesting developments than Dark Half, in a much more appropriate runtime, so voting for it.

Castle got really lucky here…

The battle of the last two solo directors ends with a decisive victory for William Castle. Romero had a good run and had he advanced he would have ha a 1 in 3 chance of drawing Night of the Living Dead (and a 2 out of 3 chance of drawing Diary or Survival of the Dead) but none of that will come to pass as his run ends here. This was actually his 10th film drawn in Bracketology tying him with Takashi Miike for 1st all time and his 6 wins leaves him tied for 3rd all time with Tobe Hooper. He still has movies left so he might get more chances in future tourneys but this week and year goes to Castle. And Castle picks up his 6th win to tie him with Romero and Hooper so a victory this week could move him into second all time. And the Final Four will see him draw his 9th film so he could reach #1 in all categories if he makes it to the finals. Luck might have been on his side this week against a soft Romero film but either way he advances into the Final Four.

Brian De Palma loses for the first time this tournament and for the second time overall and with him goes Tarnop’s Agents Provocateur. He carried the team all tourney so this was really his run but unfortunately for him he couldn’t get past the sleaziness this time around and instead Heavy Metal gets the win. Not that wasn’t the least problematic film either but it was good enough… or not bad enough… to get the win here and advance Kangra’s Weird Tales of Dan O’Bannon once again and into the Final Four. De Palma still has Carrie in the bag so he could be back to add to his totals but he finishes this tourney with an overall victory of 4-2. But its been a Weird journey for the Weird Kangra O’Bannon team and its not over yet.

So lets look at the Final Four.

3. (twernt’s Spooky Swinging Sixties) Brunello Rondi’s The Demon vs. 14. (Deb’s Team Quite Good Directors That I Enjoy) Robert Aldrich’s Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte

Kicking off the Final Four with the last remaining bye seed in the tournament against the last legacy return from last year’s Final Four. Deb’s Team Quite Good Directors That I Enjoy was not in the tourney last year as this is their first go, but you could make the argument that it is the spiritual successor to Queer as gently caress You which not only was here in the Final Four but made it to the Championships before falling to MZ’s One n Dones. So now its a contest to see if Deb can take a team to the Final Four the second year in a row or if twernt’s own super team can fulfill their top seed ranking (a bye that incidentally Deb gave to the team). Robert Aldritch won back in Round 2 with Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? and he’s brought Baby Jane with him as Bette Davis is back with him in a film that sounds similar but different. This is Brunello Rondi’s first appearance, a director who’s filmography sure looks a lot like softcorn porn but The Demon sounds more like the psycho sexual thing that tends to go over very well in Bracketology. Its been a wild tourney so far. Most of the big names have fallen and we’ve got a real wildcard bunch here in the Final Four. But we’ve got two of the biggest teams left here facing off from two of the biggest contributors to the tourney. So one of them is gonna make that last run for the gold.

The Demon is available for streaming on AMC+, Shudder, Film Movement, and TubiTV.
Hush… Hush, Sweet Charlotte is out there and available upon request.

9. William Castle’s The Old Dark Castle vs. 11. (Kangra’s Weird Tales of Dan O'Bannon) Christian Duguay’s Scanners II: The New Order

William Castle is basically the Cinderella run of this tourney. A low seed name that is known but maybe not celebrated like others but has managed to pick up win after win with his unique brand of horror comedy in what is likely to be his last ever Bracketology run. So can he keep it going with a comedic Hammer version of James Whale’s Universal classic? Hammer from Universal is a familiar feel and Castle’s sensibility has gotten him this far. But his opponent is another very unexpected Cinderella you never would have possible predicted at the start of this tourney. By the weird twist of fate of the RNG Christian Duquay has become one of the most successful directors of our tourney getting more votes than John Carpenter, Ingmar Bergman, and drat near everyone else. And its not like he’s been shocking the hell out of us as a hidden gem, he’s just managed to produce entertaining trash in convenient matchups. So can he do it again? We’ve already watched his Scanners III in this tourney (and it won) so now we’re going a little backwards to watch Scanners II. Or not because a lot of people already watched it back in June so maybe you save some time this week. Or does Castle continue his retirement run like Serena and get one last chance to charm us and become king of Bracketology? Or will our next king be… Christian Duquay? Sometimes the tourney produces the favored teams all at the end in matchups you could have predicted all along. And sometimes it produces a matchup you could have never possibly imagined 36 weeks ago. But here we are and one of these guys is gonna go for the crown.

Sequel Alert: Scanners II is naturally the sequel to Scanners. And not only have we watched Scanners in a previous tourney but we watched Scanners III in this tourney so you might have just already binged this if you’re so inclined. But hey, maybe you skipped this one like I did and while I’m pretty sure you can get by just knowing some people have psychic powers and can blow up brains there’s always the original out there if you want the backstory.

Scanners is available of streaming on Criterion and HBOMax.

The Old Dark Castle is available for streaming on Youtube.
Scanners II: The New Order is available for streaming on Plex, Pluto, Popcornflix, and TubiTV.

That’s the Final Four. We’re almost done. Championships next week. That will be 6 movies but you’ve probably seen some of them during this so it should be a chill way to end. I got stuff for post tourney so its gonna be a busy couple of weeks of work for me but for everyone else I hope its a great and relaxing end to what I hope was a fun time these last 8 months. But hey, we’re not finished yet.

As always the goal is to just have fun and watch what you want. We try and make sure every film is reasonably available, some are a little harder to find than others and not everyone has the right streaming services so if you need help ask and help might be right around the corner.

The Dark Old House vs. Scanners II

How many times was The Dark Old House made in the early 60s? We know of at least two just from the last few weeks of the thread. This one is better than the terrible Pat Boone one The Horror of it All, but I can't call it good.

Scanners II is like an attempted Aliens to Scanners' Alien. It's also not good, especially when it grinds to a halt to explain what happened to the characters from the first one. I think it wins though, because I'm docking DOH for being a cookie cutter entry in what was clearly a fad. At least Scanners II tried some fun weird stuff, like casting a Steve Aoki lookalike to fight Quentin Tarantino's second cousin.

Scanners II was boring and a lot of nothing. It would have made for a perfectly serviceable 90s TV pilot but its absolutely nothing as a film. Nothing notably bad or anything. I watched it two days ago and I have no idea what I could say about it. Its just nothing.

The Old Dark House isn't exactly a good film but as usual Castle charmed me. I got a few laughs and there's actually something very amusing about the meta idea that like William Castle invaded a Hammer film and just Castled it up. And full disclosure, I fell asleep during it. And you'd think that's a bad thing but I've actually not been able to sleep for days and the film actually was able to relax me and put me in a place where I could sleep. And I think that's worth something. So its an easy vote for me.

Il Demonia was pretty and the lead is great (and pretty) but it didn't feel like there was much of a plot or point or anything to it. I dunno. Like maybe it was about a disturbed woman who needed help but was demonized by an ignorant and misogynistic society? But like... she's feeding people her blood and throwing dead cats around so that kind of muddies the whole "witch" thing. I really just never got a sense of what we were doing and the whole story felt very loosely assembled. A weaker lead and this film probably would have fallen apart. She carries the film. But it wasn't really enough to impress me on the whole.

I'm gonna try and watch Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte today. But on paper its its vote to lose.

Kangra
May 7, 2012

Well, William Castle almost managed to lose my vote with The Old Dark House. It's certainly not one of his better efforts. I'm also not entirely sure if he's helping or hindering here, since his style doesn't ever quite seem to mesh with the film. Yet there's just enough charm there that I can vote for it. Scanners II does have some promise, and a good villain who fails to get enough screen time. Taken as a whole, it is listless and bland. As I've said, Scanners III is the better version of this, and while it's closer than I expected, I'm going for Castle here.

Old Dark House is just dreadfully boring, with nothing that makes it’s a Castle movie to me – he’s not even in it! There’s some fun elements, I like the set, the whole Noah’s Ark subplot and the abrupt ending, but most jokes just fall completely flat. The slapstick is just dreadful. Please stop remaking this movie unless you got some real talent.

Scanners 2 is definitely no Scanners 3, but there’s a lot of good stuff. There’s some nice gore and sfx, the action isn’t bad and the villains are really good. On the downside it’s a bit too long and not exactly thrilling overall. Still easily enough to beat ODH.

Thanks to a very clutch assist by Goat, I was able to watch The Demon. I liked the old world Italian VVitch vibes, but man the lead character confused me. Why are you announcing you are a witch and then getting surprised when people are unhappy about that?

Bette Davis in Hush... Hush may not have been able to do a Louisiana accent, but it didn't matter a bit because she was just so fun to watch. The mystery was interesting enough too: I had guesses and got it wrong even though there were only like six characters. Didn't recognize Victor Buono at all, he aged a lot with facial hair.

Vote for Hush Hush

I got Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte in this morning and really enjoyed it. I think the pacing and length might be a bit off. It does feel like it spends a bit of time lingering in the middle. And you could probably call it a lesser Baby Jane but it actually feels like a very fitting followup that kind of gives you a touch of what worked and some diverting of expectations. Bette Davis is great and while Olivia de Havilland does well it does feel a bit like the absence of Joan Crawford shows in like the attention Miriam gets. I dunno. It feels like they set out to make a film with Davis and Crawford again and when Crawford dropped it became a Davis film. But Davis is great and the film looks amazing and has a great southern gothic vibe. Its probably not a film I should have watched on a Saturday morning and one I'd like to revisit properly down the line, but I enjoyed it.

So I'd say Sweet Charlotte matches Demon on lead performance and shooting/style and its got a much stronger story. So its an easy vote for me.

FYI, Bracketology might go up a little late today. I still can't actually finalize matchups until the voting is done which means I also can't finish writeups or graphics/polls until then. I'm working on getting as close as I can to get it up as quick as I can but if its a bit late that just means I'm working on it.

Hush Hush…Sweet Caroline is definitely a lesser What Ever Happened To Baby Jane, but that doesn’t make it a bad movie. Bette Davis gives off a fantastic, troubled yet dignified performance that really makes the ending feel extra triumphant. Also quite unexpectedly gory. Great setting, southern gothic is always a joy. Quite liked it, easily one of the better movies in this tournament.

Il Demonio is, unfortunately for Aldrich, a really really hard contender. Striking imagery from start to finish, a stunning lead, perhaps inspiration for at least 2-3 all time horror classics – I was fully on board from start to finish. If I had to find something to criticize I’d point out the two odd instances where a voiceover explains what’s happening - no faith in the audience to understand it? The ending isn’t as good Hush, but I like everything else much better.

Demonio it is!

Castle did it! He became the first solo director in the team era of this to reach the finals with a pretty decisive 10-3 victory over Scanners II. Tough break for Kangra’s Weird Tales of Dan O’Bannon that spent the entire tournament definitely delivering on the “weird” part of the team’s promise but not so much on the “Dan O’Bannon” part thanks to the no cherry picking rule. Maybe something or us to address before next year. But for now that’s the end of the line for Kangra’s team and Castle advances.

In an impossibly close matchup Il Demonia just NARROWLY defeats Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte by a score of 7-6! A heartbreaking loss for Deb’s Team Quite Good Directors That I Enjoy but one that should not be the takeaway from their great run. This team clearly proved that not only were they quite good directors that Deb enjoyed but that everyone enjoyed. And Deb falls just short of making the finals for the second year in a row but unquestionably racking up the best run of success in Bracketology. Gonna have to figure out how to quantify that into stats. But its the end of the line for this team this year and for twernt’s Spooky Swinging Sixties its on to the finals!

Its Championship time! As I did last year I’m gonna do 3 matchups. The first is the usual random RNG draw from the films left on the teams. The second is the movie which has already been drawn and won the biggest for the team. Basically a test to see if its really as good as its win said or if it got a lucky draw. And the last is the movie that just squeaked by last time, to once again test to see if it got a lucky draw or what. That means only 2 new movies this week and 4 others that you might have already seen this tournament or maybe you missed and can catch up on. So lets get to them.

3. (twernt’s Spooky Swinging Sixties) Herk Harvey’s Carnival of Souls vs. 9. William Castle’s The Night Walker

Spooky Swinging Sixties is the last seed left standing after all this and has put up quite a strong showing of films including Ingmar Bergman twice. And now its last go it draws an absolute cult classic in Carnival of the Souls. A film that could have easily fit on last year’s champion One n Dones its one of those films that was just one outing from the director but left such an impression that it influenced generations of horror fans and creators. On the other side of things we have Castle not only fighting for himself but breaking the team curse and managed to make it to the finals as a solo director! Now he has to try and win it for all those big names who went down to an early TV movie or a late stage past their prime cheap studio bad CGI outing. Castle draws something in the middle? A little later in his career but solidly in the middle of the reviews or popularity on Letterboxd. And its not a Psycho or Old Dark House knockoff. But it does have 4 time Oscar nominated Barbara Stanwyck in her final film role before she became a 3 time Emmy winning TV actress. We’ve certainly been blessed with many of the iconic ladies of the golden years like Bette Davis and Joan Crawford and now Stanwyck. Will that be enough to get Castle 1 of the 2 wins he needs to finish this off? Or is Carnival of Souls just too strong a starter for Spooky Swinging Sixties on their own path to victory?

Carnival of Souls is available everywhere for streaming. Seriously. Amazon Prime, TubiTV, HBO Max, Criterion, Shudder, Hoopla, whatever. Its probably even on Youtube but I didn’t check. Eminent domain, baby.
The Night Walker is out there and available upon request.

3. (twernt’s Spooky Swinging Sixties) Masaki Kobayashi’s Kwaidan vs. 9. William Castle’s 13 Ghosts

Spooky Swinging Sixties actually had very close wins every round and there were no real standout victories. Which is funny since it really did have some standout names and films as if it was picked directly off the Criterion Collection. And probably the biggest was Kwaidan, a cult classic anthology that probably the only reason anyone hasn’t seen is because of its length or language barrier. It picked up a decisive 9-3 victory back in May in an unfortunate draw of twernt vs twernt’s Hey folks, its folk horror! But it worked out because here is twernt’s team in the championship fight. On the other side 13 Ghosts wasn’t just Castle’s biggest win, it was one of the biggest wins of the tourney as back in July it beat twernt’s Buggin Out’s Swarm by a 10-1 score. But is this the big winner that had a lucky draw the first time around? 13 Ghosts is certainly a charming little castle classic in its own right but its big league time and its not drawing some random bug movie this round. This is a tough matchup for sure and while there’s probably a place for 13 Ghosts’ charming and easy watch to hit more with people than the long foreign anthology it does feel like a bit of a lopsided fight. But we gotta vote to be sure.

Kwaidan is available for streaming on HBO Max and Criterion.
13 Ghosts is available for streaming on Plex.

3. (twernt’s Spooky Swinging Sixties) Brunello Rondi’s The Demon vs. 9. William Castle’s Homicidal

We’re running il Demonia right back since its TIGHT narrow victory sure enough proved to be the closest of the tourney for Spooky Swinging Sixties. I did consider skipping it so we didn’t do the same movie two weeks in a row but that didn’t seem fair and we’re winding up now so there’s no need for every movie to be a fresh watch. Either way Il Demonia definitely had its fans and might very well have done a lot stronger if it wasn’t up against as strong competition as Robert Adrich and Bette Davis. And for Castle its also a recent draw being repeated since it was just 2 weeks ago that Homicidal knocked off George Romero’s Dark Half, and it was actually a decisive 8-3 victory but there were 3 abstentions which managed to draw the lowest ballot percentage of his tourney. That may be a precursor of the “lucky draw” aspect and test here. On paper it seems like if Homicidal couldn’t secure those votes against a generally poorly received film then it won’t against a generally better received film? But these matchups are all pretty unique and down to what strikes what votes at the right time. Hell, you might enjoy a film more or less than you did two weeks ago because you’re just in a different place or seeing something new in it.

Also this was actually the same percentage as A Quiet Place in the Country had back in the first round. So once again the RNG came into play for the last matchup of the week and drew this one. What would this tournament be without the randomness of draws and timing and I think that makes this setup kind of the right way to do it. But which of these two warriors will suffer for it?

The Demon is available for streaming on AMC+, Shudder, Film Movement, and TubiTV.
Homicidal is out there and available upon request.

And that’s it. That’s our Championship matchup. Its been a fun if sometimes exhausting ride for me but I’ll save that for next week. We’ve got two new films this week and a few more that maybe you skipped the last time or feel like revisiting. And I threw in a survey at the start of the poll so sorry for that, but as always I wanna make this thing as rewarding for everyone as possible.

As always the goal is to just have fun and watch what you want. We try and make sure every film is reasonably available, some are a little harder to find than others and not everyone has the right streaming services so if you need help ask and help might be right around the corner.

Vote or change your vote until 12 noon EST September 17th (or when I get to the computer)
