In 1964 Jim Marshall of the Minnesota Vikings recovered a fumble and ran 64 yard the wrong way into his own endzone and recorded a safety

I remember watching an old NFL bloopers VHS at my grandparents' house when I was a kid and they had rated Marshall's safety the biggest gaffe (or something to that effect) in NFL history at the time. I'm curious how it would compare to the Buttfumble or Orlovsky stepping out the back of the end zone if it happened today.

I think it still has to be #1 just cause he had so much time to realize his mistake. Orlovsky is close but he lost awareness of his feet for like half a second. Marshall would've been running for quite awhile with everyone screaming at him to stop

I went to a Lions-Jets game in 2012 I think where Jason Hanson got hurt on a FG attempt via roughing the kicker, and on the new set of downs the Lions scored a touchdown and sent out Ndamukong Suh to attempt the PAT.

Naturally, Suh hit the upright and the Lions lost in overtime.

It was 2010. I'd spent most of the day at the Detroit Institute of Arts with my dad, getting extra credit for my AP English class. We listened to the 4th quarter and overtime on the drive home, helpless to do all but imagine the Jets grinding downfield to score the overtime field goal.

I mean, by the time the interceptor is breaking the plane (forwards) there's nothing to be done but try and block for a few extra yards.

Yelling "get down" or whatnot sure, but surprise tackling a teammate that is unlikely to have the best ball-tucking skills? And being so late to do so that it would have been ruled a safety regardless? Ayoye.

IMO that's worse than Marshall which only required a moment of confusion and a ton of adrenaline. This was two players independently deciding to do something drastic and wholly unnecessary. A Perfect Catastrophe.

Safeties count more than regular TDs but less than Fatmen TDs

The most valuable play in NFL history was the buttfumble followed by the overtime safety predicted in a dream and the punt that got stuck in a puddle. From that and a multiplier that values rushes over passes, we can extrapolate the value of all other plays.

11 years ago? Oh god.

I went and looked it up and while I believed the play that iced it in OT was a 50 yard bomb from Mark Sanchez to Braylon Edwards it was actually to Santonio Holmes. Another thing my brain wants me to believe is that people were getting up to leave while the pass was still in the air.
