China is also turning into a huge global market that nobody wants to piss off. They're also investing massively in shareholder stakes in media companies that they can't otherwise influence by witholding access to their markets, which is why given the choice of mentioning Tianemen Square or getting money, most companies will keep quiet.

There's a Netflix series called History 101 that goes into the rise of China as an economic power, but it's from a very American perspective*, and rounds out the episode by implying that China's prosperity overtaking the US in the near future is a sinister thing.

* The space race episode is especially hilarious, because they keep counting up the amount of times the Russians beat the US into space (0-5), and then the second the US lands on the moon, all 5 of the Russian victories on the infographic explode and the US victories turn into a 1.

They then mention that the Russians built Mir, but the Russian count doesn't go back up.

I see that. But if you look at the post I quoted above there is also something going on with China that doesn't get the same focus.
I think my point (or at least part of my intended point) was that China's economic power is deliberately leveraged to supress a lot of criticism of the government. There's not the same economic fear of criticising the Israeli government and losing access to their markets / investors as there is of losing out on Chinese money.

Even journalists have to be careful because if their paper / station is publicly traded, the owners might get a quiet word in their ear if the article is too critical.

This is always going to be the frustrating thing about discussing capitalism and liberalism vs communism / socialism with anyone. The lib/cap side is always going to keep arguing an idealised fantasy version of their theory and ignoring real world attempts at them failing as not really being lib/cap, and it still being a noble goal. But com/soc of course is always argued in terms of the real world failures (that largely failed because of lib/cap interference or corruption), and then using that as an argument against the theoretical, idealised systems.

It's like someone trying to argue that their electric car is better because at some point in the future a wizard will make it self driving and carbon negative, and all the times they burst into flames locking their occupants into a fiery shell of death, or cost more carbon to manufacture and ship than the average petrol car uses in its lifespan, or tried to take a shortcut through a bus queue shouldn't count because they never meant to do those things.

I've noticed a few people in the Monbiot debate seeming to imply that purity (in terms of never having said / associated with anything problematic) is a unique problem with 'the left,' when honestly it seems like a problem with a minority of hardliners that you would get in any collection of human beings. And then go on to pretend the majority of people on the left are like that.

Just look at the Riley / Obermann spiral of insanity over trying to get people fired for liking a tweet that mentioned Corbyn positively. Or fubpees pulling up any criticism of the EU as proof of racist arch-brexiteering. Or hell, getting shitcanned by BTS stans for once saying you didn't like their music. Every group has these hardliners for whom a 'this you' hit means never having to listen to that person again.

As as side note it's one of the reasons I find twitter dunks so impenetrable, because half the time they revolve around knowing not only who the person is, but also the context of what they said, and the context of the person doing the dunk.

My least favourite example is Tomska, asdfmovie animator. Some of his old videos have issues. Some are outright offensive to vulnerable people. But if you keep up with him now, he's just an older youtube guy trying to make wholesome content who gets kicked in the dick every few months when someone rediscovers content he's clearly sorry for.

Counter example I think I've mentioned before: Jim Davidson. Whereas Tomska is openly apologetic over his older content and trying to do better, Davidson is clearly not happy he's had to stop being racist. There's a video on youtube of him at a signing saying he can't keep apologising for stuff he said 30 years ago, but if he genuinely regretted it and realised why it was wrong, why would you not apologise every time it came up? Why rail against the cancel culture that won't let you say the gamer word on stage any more?

There is a huge difference between someone who said something poo poo and is trying to be better, and someone who was poo poo and is still poo poo. The issue with pulling up old tweets like that is whether it's to warn people they're hypocritical / still poo poo, or if you're doing it to say "You shouldn't listen to this person, ever if they're right, because they once did a bad." And a worrying amount of people don't seem to recognise the difference between the two.

If you have someone like Monbiot who says the Nandy recommendation was because he was put on the spot about a subject he (at the time) didn't really understand, and is apologising for it now, leave the guy the gently caress alone. Dunk on him for it sure, rag on him for it, but lets not pretend it's any reason to never listen to what he has to say again, especially when he's one of the few journalists taking anticapitalist sentiment even remotely seriously.

I hate to seem like I'm aligning myself with the 'ugh, they're posting screenshots of old tweets' discourse from a few days ago, (or the kind of anti-woke rants Vitamin P used to go on), but there's something massively toxic to any movement that indulges in your-fave-is-problematic levels of refusal to accept that a person can ever change their opinion.

People - even people on the left - seem to be portraying it as a uniquely leftist problem though, and it's not. Not really.

Monbiot is broadly good now, and is at least trying. Like yes he expressed a poo poo opinion. Everyone had poo poo opinions back then, and he admits that it was uninformed.

I'm not voting Labour. I think that if you do you're legitimising Keith.. He's not going to get in, and the wider margin he crashes and burns by, the better.
I really don't think this is true. His popularity is in the toilet right now and they're already blaming it on long-Corbyn. If it really tanks, they'll just replace him with Streeting or Reeves and the ideology will remain exactly the same - they will literally never see their tory-lite policies as the problem. And they've fixed the NEC & local systems so that a leftist surprise is never ever going to happen again.

You're talking about sending a message to a party that is stood there with it's fingers in its ears going "Lalala, electorability sensible business focussed middle ground lalala" while SPADS pull lib-dem level stat-bending to convince their idiot MPs that punitive austerity is what people really want.

Meanwhile every missing vote is a proportional boost to the Tories. I hate that it's that way. I don't think there's anything else in my life that will make me feel as sad / angry as what they did to the Corbyn / Momentum movement. I do not want to vote for Labour now. But I do want to vote against the Tories and Lib Dems, and the best way to do that with all the current fuckery and norms is sadly Labour.

Everything is hosed right now. There are no perfect or even good enough choices. Tactical voting sites disproportionately say to vote Lib Dem based on one Guardian article by an ex lib dem (I wrote a whole thing about this but it's long and rambling and my hands are too hosed to edit the relevant bit out). A lib/lab coalition is probably the only numerically likely alternative to the Tories in this press hellscape, and it's going to be absolutely loving unbearable if it even happens.

The answer is not to abstain from choosing though. We've had too many Tory governments that have slipped through on opposition doubt. I cannot afford for the benefits system to get any worse. I don't want to see the climate continue to get worse when summer is already loving unbearable. Nor do I want to see the culture war poo poo slide further into open fascism, or see the NHS get any more privatised.

Absolutely yes Labour are centrist dipshits right now, but given the choice between capitulating idiots and a sociopathic kleptocrats, I'd rather try and stop the overton window getting bulldozed as far right as possible.

And pre 2019 when a massive chunk of Tories defected to the lib dems. Half of the Lib candidates are literally Tory infiltrators.

One thing that strikes me is that Labour's swing to the right and attempted rebranding as the party of business is... Why did they do this with Labour? I mean I get the MI5 plant conspiracy theories, and I can also see why they would just look at Labour as the 2nd biggest party and so the most likely non-tory place to make it happen. But just looking at the labour right as a group who genuinely think that centrism and business appeal is the thing... Why battle twice as hard to turn Labour into that?

It's not a great analogy, but it's like if a company did a hostile takeover of McDonalds, with the reputation McDonalds has; then pivoted to health food only, and then spent their whole time bitching that they lost their entire customer base. The core will stop going because they're no longer getting what they used to go for (trash burgers), and the new audience (health food) are going to be put off by the long-term reputation, historic branding and the old customer base who want that old branding back.

This is an actual problem McDonalds are actually having, an attempted pivot to health food and being seen as almost a starbucks-esque middle class coffee joint, but they still have to appeal to the huge chunk of their base who want a cheap burger meal, turn up wearing trackies and scare off the nice middle class families they want to be appealing to.

Like it's not possible to be the party of workers rights AND the party of business. It's just not. And if you're going to try and go all-in on business, then it's absolutely nonsensical to try and do that in a party still structurally funded by unions. Businesses are never going to fund a party that is still tied to the unions, not like they would the tories or Lib Dems.

It's just mad, but Keith and his pet dickheads are never going to be able to see why people hate them. They're management wankers.
