I see it being sold another way. That the poor are "failing at America," the "land of opportunity." Buzzwords that Boomers eat right up because the last time they were even remotely true was when they were coming up in the world.

The homeless will be the "trial program." There's a reason most choose to stay *out* of shelters, but people (liberal and conservative) who don't care enough to learn why that is just assume they'd be better off "somewhere safe," you know, away from them and their compromised property values. And hey, if we can give them "jobs," in the loosest measure of the term, all the better, right?!?! Expect to have it sold as "bringing back American manufacturing" by people who will say that having a pool of forced labor "incentivized workers" will reduce our dependence on China. It's not like the precedent doesn't already exist for illegal/undocumented workers, it'll just take a bit more finagling because even a homeless person is still a citizen, more often than not.

There was that article that the “respectable” conservative Claremont Institute put out arguing that most American citizens shouldn’t be considered citizens legally or ethically, and in the mind of someone like that “citizen” means “person.”

Here we go:

I agree. It should be treated as a matter like insanity defense if they’re really dangerous like this kid until they’re not but it’s baffling to me how you can be “charged as an adult” when you’re literally not.

Like those kids parents were freaks right? There’s a chance years away with time to mature he could be normalish but that’s not likely to happen in prison.

A gun safe costs about as much as a short range day worth of ammo lol

Butter Activities
May 4, 2018

The obvious reasonable solution is just to require some sort of locked container for storage at minimum and demonstration of some level of training but of course at least in the United States the purpose of most gun control laws is either to disenfranchise the poor or placate anti-gun donors, rather than in European countries with high rates of gun ownership where it's more like just having a car and driver's license.

I think voting still matters in some local stuff but I’ve totally given up on the centrist Dems after being a sucker one last time and voting for Biden.

The horrors on the border are still going, reproductive rights on the way out, drug laws are still regressive, zero police reform, no healthcare, no consequences for those behind the insurrection, and no education cost reform.

The mainline Dems are so loving worthless at this point that voting for them does more harm than good.

Oh an insulin and epinephrine is still insanely expensive and the sackler family isn’t all dead or in prison.

We already lost the Supreme Court so what’s the point? Voting third party or protest voting en masse is the only thing that’ll make them wake up.

Accelerationism is a pretty privileged ideology, in my view. It's the assumption that you'll be fine while things accelerate, even if it's very bad for others, in the hopes of a longer-term payoff that may never come to fruition.

Accelerationism is bad and dumb. But I don’t see any point in voting for the mainline Dems until they start doing stuff since they seem to deliberately allowing themselves to lose to rile up their base without losing their donors. I’ll vote for the independents and progressives that actually kinda try.

I don’t see how enabling the Dems to play softball with fascists so they can keep the gravy train is any different than accelerationism. The only way to actually stop it is to stop enabling it.

Too late anyway imo, I think the last chance was either the Dems to do something with this anti-trump wave or for another Trump term to shake them out of doing almost nothing. I’m hoping the upcoming disaster in 2022 and 2024 shakes them out of complacency and being de-facto enablers for the far right but I’m worried that ship already sailed without things getting unavoidably worse.

I strongly regret voting for Biden at this point. He’s done nothing whatsoever domestically and just let the GOP strategy play out perfectly

Butter Activities
May 4, 2018

Yeah it’s just weird to see how obvious the GOP voter suppression, judicial takeover and opposition party strategy is and the Dems to just roll over and play right into it while whining about how AOC and Bernie voters almost cost them the election.

It’s like Jimmy Carter 2.0, if he was also a sex pest.

What’s the stated purpose of boycotting it anyway? The kind of poo poo the US and aligned proxies pulled on the third world when it came to giving them access to vaccines this year alone pales in comparison to anything China does internationally and the state department decided what China was doing to its minority population wasn’t actually legally genocide since probably that would bring up a whole lot of uncomfortable issues in our history and reservations that are still ongoing and the fact our corporations are still buying Chinese labor from those camps.

Like it’s so nakedly a tantrum and attempt to start a phony Cold War. Ideology actually at least kinda seemed to matter last time around and it was still dumb as hell but this time around China and the US don’t even pretend to be different. loving embarrassing.

Maybe this is the electoral strategy christ lol because being a fake “wartime president” worked so well for trump I guess

Honestly I just thought it was funny claiming 90% participation, because honestly it reminds of those Saddam elections, but even the PRC said....uhh we have to be reasonable and still came up with 90%. It's interesting that for the person making the chart turnout seems to be most important aspect, kind of a little on the nose for the performative part of elections in non-democratic states (and not unique to the PRC of course).

The book the logic of political survival makes a pretty good case that China and the US are both much more similar in how “democratic” most Americans would like to they are (though still not that close) but with opposite mechanisms on how they control (China gate keeps the nominal electorate from the general population using the party, while the US has a broad electorate that can freely participate but uses the electoral college, registration/district fuckery and two party system to (less successfully) lock out outsiders).

To be clear though the US is still very much a “democracy” by any reasonable definition just among the most flawed of the major ones.

China is ahead of us in the jailing/killing billionaires categories, a statistic we probably should start catching up on.

IMO this is just really just Xi consolidating power than any ideology, the exact same process played out in Russia.

Don’t get me wrong I’d like the Sacklers to face justice but the “isn’t it rad that China kills some billionaires” just seems kinda not it.

As Xi tightens his grip over the party and country I think China has the potential to become a much scarier thing than it already is because until Xi ethnonationalism wasn’t really part of the rhetoric and policy but has rapidly accelerated.

Selectorate theory is a game theory model of politics that I think is much better and both expands and fixes the ideas from the the more well known theory talked about in “Why Nations Fail”

If you want to read more the “Dictator’s Handbook” is sorta the math-free general public explanation of the theory. Much like any sociology framework its predictive power is debatable but probably among one of the more evidence based ones.

I’ll be honest I’ve also read their actual academic publication but I don’t understand most of the notation specific t game theory and barely understood any of the technical aspects beyond maybe what each variable was so I recommend the Dictators handbook instead of the actual book Logic of Political Survival.

GCP grey also did a video on it but I think he Malcolm Gladwell’ed it and got a lot of stuff wrong and over-simplified.

Still trying to figure out what the justification is for Russian invasion of Ukraine.

According to the Ukraine guy on Radio War Nerd he doesn’t think Russian troops would be ready for a full scale invasion until after January since the buildup is still in early stages. Maybe they’re trying to be ready for some planned coup/assassination in the future that will give the pretext to hope to avoid intervention from the EU or US. There was already a mysterious hit attempt on a top government official recently in Ukraine that almost certainly involves Russian intelligence in some way.

My last duty station I was living in downtown Norfolk, which has a kind of hilariously hosed up take on walkability. You could walk to a million different bars or restaurants, and I was two blocks from the mall with a million clothing or shoe shops... but the nearest grocery store was over a mile away, and if you needed a hardware store or general-purpose store like Target or Walmart, that was about 10 miles down the highway.

Lmao I live in Ghent right now it’s loving weird how weirdly walkable yet unwalkable this town is depending on what you’re trying to do. There’s literally one single solitary supermarket foot accessible in the entire area downtown/hospital area, and it’s still too far away to carry a significant amount of groceries.
