I think it's pretty straightforward: the fundamentalist private school industry creates a lot of useful idiots for Republican orgs, but doesn't produce a lot of savvy operators with the social skills to develop an independent base of power. They are kinda shooting themselves in the foot right from the start with that "blanket training" bullshit. Just sit passively, never reach for anything better, never try to improve your situation. That may make your little kids less troublesome, but it doesn't prepare them to be functional adults men. Reminds me of all that abstinence only education a lot of these Uber religious people have, how girls are taught that they're dirty and sinful and all these horrible things, and boys might get taught not to have sex before marriage but they're never told they'll make them dirty and disgusting. And then people are surprised when the girls and women don't enjoy sex. I think it was a thread we had a while ago, or maybe it was an article linked to that where a Hasidic Jewish man was explaining daily life, that he had two daughters and was strong in his faith, and when he was asked if he could change anything in his life, he admitted he wished his wife enjoyed sex because he very much did and she did not. And of course that was after a lifetime of being told how filthy and dirty she would be if she ever did it before marriage.

That kind of mental beating doesn't go away just because you put a ring on a finger.

Of course logically in these religions women aren't supposed to enjoy sex, but it still made me kind of laughing that dark humor way that this dude couldn't understand why his wife didn't enjoy something that he very much did, and he was kind of worried about his daughters growing up the same way but was not at all going to change anything to prevent it from happening.

21? Nah, church kids don't grow up till 24 at the earliest if they don't do something to get themselves disowned or step out themselves. The entire church system shelters them so hard they're about 2-3 years behind mentally and emotionally if they're 'well-adjusted', and these cases are anything but.

They also basically don't believe in teenagers as anything but a distinction for why your darling child who was so obedient at 10 is now doing things like 'questioning you' 2 years later, so now it's time to really get the indoctrination going. Beyond that, they have a wild fascination with the idea that gradually letting people grow from childhood into adults is responsible for all sorts of (non-useful to the system) things, and instead there should basically be a ritual that immediately transitions you from child to adult.

It's great, because suddenly you go from being a child who had particular expectations put on you, but was also not expected to be competent to immediately having different expectations on you and being yelled at for acting like a child and not doing it the adult way, which you have never been taught about. Spend the next two years trying to ad hoc your own education about it and then you might be able to do something without feeling like every action you take is the wrong one.

It's like Armed Forces Basic Training to break people down, only the recruits aren't even really people yet and have nothing to break down, and the build up is to make them actual monsters instead of soldiers, who consistently will still feel bad and have nightmares about the poo poo they do.

I'll admit to this being significantly more anecdotal and tinged with my own personal recollections, in case you can't tell. I don't have any scholarly writings on it, the closest I could find off hand is 'Christians in the Hand of an Angry God', which is a series of blog posts more about how American Evangelical Christianity in the 60's made a cynical and self-interested move towards deliberate support of the Republican Party than the tangential effect it has on growing up. I'm sure there are some out there, but I haven't the grounding to find them with a cursory search, sorry.

That’s more of an individual experience, not a rule or standard. Not being expected to be competent or responsible as a child is really unusual in these circles imo. Think about how young the Duggars had to start cooking, cleaning, caring for their younger siblings. You start working very young and you’re absolutely expected not to gently caress it up because everyone is counting on you.

I think the girls started midwifery training (like for professional jobs) in their young teens, like 13 or 14. One of the boys also got a pilot’s license young.

I’m not saying they’re as emotionally mature as their secular peers, but usually responsibility is moved younger, not older.

Disciplining them too. One of the girls' responsibilities was to ensure their brothers didn't get any lustful thoughts, so whenever an insufficiently modest woman was nearby they were supposed to make sure the boys weren't looking.

I can see how you would definitely start feeling the weight of responsibility at a young age if your mother handed you a baby sister at 12 years old and commanded you to start taking care of it.

I can also see how there would be a distinction between child and adult in terms of how much you were expected to manage on your own: carpentry upkeep on the house at 12 vs budgeting and managing the cult’s car lot money laundering service at 20.

I’ve been watching the “cults to consciousness” videos and I’m pretty sure it started as a podcast. Several of the guests tell their stories about being raised in the IBLP. I can’t remember if this episode gets into what you’re asking about.

Trigger warning for discussion of sexual abuse and grooming in the majority of the videos.

Appeals court upholds Josh Duggar’s conviction for downloading child sex abuse images

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) — A federal appeals court on Monday upheld Josh Duggar’s conviction for downloading child sexual abuse images, rejecting the former reality television star’s argument that a judge should have suppressed statements he made to investigators during the search that found the images.
...
Duggar’s attorneys argued that statements he made to investigators during the search of the dealership should not have been allowed at trial since his attorney wasn’t present. Prosecutors said Duggar asked the agents, “‘What is this all about? Has somebody been downloading child pornography?” and that he declined to say whether he had looked at such material online, comments that were later used as evidence in the trial.
