Endwalker feels like 130% of an expansion (which make sense, they said it was 30% longer). I would much rather that be squished into 1 expansion, then expanded out into two expansion and five content patches.

For me, the power in Endwalker hasn't necessarily been (full game spoilers) the cosmic battle vs nihilism (though that is v. good), but it has instead been the little character moments. There is so much in this expansion but we've still had plenty of time to just sit with characters and just have moments. Seeing all my friends from the last 8 years reach the culmination of their personal arcs is incredibly powerful and inspiring.

I do feel like Endwalker is two expansions squeezed together, and that’s not necessarily a detriment (in fact I really like Endwalker, even if I think Shadowbringers was the better story). But I can see how those two separate expansions would have worked out and I don’t hate them.

Expansion 1 (spoilers for the first half of Endwalker basically, up to level 85). The Garlemald Campaign, a more focused expansion about pushing our way into Garlemald and ending the tower threat. You’d start at Radz-at-Han and head north through Ilsabard, getting a zone in the Viera homeland and Bozja and so on until you reach Garlemald which goes pretty much the way it does in Endwalker.

Expansion 2 (spoilers for the rest of the story). Dealing with the actual End of Days, Sharlayan gets the main city focus here and you expand the Elpis and Labyrinthos stuff to more meaningfully be about finding a solution to the Endsinger. Lots of call backs, visiting new parts of old zones on our global quest for an answer which would also let you expand out the apocalypse weather stuff, but not necessarily aiming for misery porn.

So the question is - Would the death of Zodiark happen at the end of expansion 1? The start of expansion 2? The patches? And what would the patches cover in this idea?

Not trying to be dismissive or argumentative (hope it didn't come across that way), generally curious in expanding this idea. It's a good thought exercise.

It's not out of the question that they did discuss this, that there was enough material to spread through two expansions to bring things to their end... but also, FFXIV is getting long in the tooth. Maybe they wondered how much longer the game honestly could go at the subscriber level and engagement level that it was at, especially if they didn't follow up Shadowbringers with something just as powerful and and emotional. Maybe they made the choice to just jam it all together and go for the biggest drat finish possible while the fire was still there, either creatively on their end or engagement-wise from the player base.

Honestly, the biggest shame about not splitting this up over 2 expansion is - not having the "end" of the story happening at level 99.

Lord_Magmar posted:

To answer the question Probably either as the final trial of expansion 1, or the .3 patch trial. The former gives more time to build up towards the poo poo the end is coming stuff. Maybe the first blasphemy becomes the .3 trial, the latter would be more close to how the expansion stories normally work where .3 is the last of an expansion and .4 is the build up towards the next. You could also plausibly put it in .5 so that in universe you get the immediacy of the End of Days Endwalker gives. But the patches would cover rebuilding Garlemald and preparing for the oncoming End of Days, reaffirming allies and making sure we’re ready for whatever the true nature of the calamity is.

Honestly I think Endwalker is better than my idea, I just think the outline I gave is reasonable for an origin point for what Endwalker became, in terms of two expansions being turned into one bigger than average expansion.

I could certainly see this working, if some of the events would require significant reshuffling. I think Zodiark as the x.3 boss would make sense. I wouldn't want 5 patches of "final days" as that would be depressing and would make all other activities feel extra ridiculous to be doing during the apocalypse. (It's funny if you pause the MSQ before the final zone to work on crafting/gathering. Just hanging out in Thavnair/Garlemald during the apocalypse, gathering some wood.)

With this, you'd need to introduce the moon prior to the end of the expansion, since they don't add zones in patches like WoW does. Which would make for the Garlemald through moon portion to be a bit funky. If the final boss of Expansion 1 isn't Zodiark, who is it? Anima? Fandaniel/Zenos? We would need to go to the moon for some reason before the end of the Expansion 1 if we're going to return in the x.3 patch to kill Zodiark. And I do think Zodiark being the x.3 boss makes far more sense than the Expansion 1 boss.

I think Expansion 2 is a lot easier to conceptualize. You could easily add another zone to the World Unsundered, then greatly expand the scope of the Final Days zones. Add Corvos as a zone too.

Reflecting on this thought experiment - What I've come to realize is that everything from level 84-90 feels like an entire full expansion in and of itself. Which means the 80-83 feels like the "extra 30%." If we were to split this into two expansions, I think the second of the two expansions would be universally thought of as "the best thing they've ever done" and then the first of the two expansions would be like "a big step back from Shadowbringers and at the level of Stormblood." The first of the two expansions would suffer the most from the split.

I love speculative thought experiments like this.

So I think you’re more likely to see a 2002 error during the “max” part of a rush far more than during the ramp up and far far more than during the ramp down at the end of the night.

The most recent stuff from Reddit said the queue “rebuilds” every 15 minutes. And if there are more than max people trying to hit the login servers, then it can dump people in queue by mistake.

During the ramps up and down at the start and end of the night, you’re not going to see max people hitting login servers, hence less likely to see a 2002 error.

This is my theory.

I've been watching my wife go through the story and it's been interesting seeing some of the stuff in the 80-83 content a second time. (General Endwalker spoilers) After the 83 trial, when Zodiark/Amon-Fandaniel die, Amon says something along the lines of "The me I was would hate the me I became" or something like that. Which has a different vibe after playing through the later zones. There are quite a few moments like that.

I've had some thoughts on some of this stuff and I realized a solution to some of the issues people have with EW (more general spoilers) Many have said that Dynamis should have been seeded earlier. And I agree I wish it was. I don't necessarily even think you have to do it as far back as even the Shadowbringers 5.0 MSQ. Some people say that Endwalker feels like "two expansions in one" aka the Stormblood problem. I think one thing that could have alleviated that more would be to seed more of that in patch 5.4/5.5. People were already complaining that 5.4/5.5 were a bit lean on the story and expansion ramp-up. One hook they could have done would be to have the lady scientist elephant come over to Eorzea when she hears about our tempering cure, she drops some general Thavnair lore, talks about the Akasa, then fucks off and basically says "If you're ever in Thavnair, come check on how my research is going." I think this would do a lot of work to smooth out that lore ramp. If anything, Endwalker is made weaker due to 5.4/5.5 not doing enough. Just some random stoned thoughts.

For me, having gil is nice because I'm able to funnel that back into my FC. Since it's a smaller FC, I've been fronting a lot of costs for stuff like getting our submarines/airships up and running. I covered the cost of our FC house and stuff like that. Currently working on saving up so that our FC can aim for a larger house in 6.1.

So what region do we know that could plausibly serve as a wide open area with a bunch of fights that also expands on the lore/tucks away dangling plot threads from Endwalker?

87ish spoilers ahead
Locus Amoenus aka Corvos. It’s the Garlean homeland, it’s full of Allagan bullshit for the relic, it was the area absolutely trucked by the Final Days and thus likely still absolutely full of Blasphemies which serves as a narrative justification for the gameplay convention of skirmishes/CEs/etc. It has it all.

As much as I disagree with almost everything Cythereal says, hard content is a very subjective term. Any number of things can be at play here, ranging from motor control, reflexes, attention, concentration, memory, multitasking, timing, anxiety, or even lazyness or apathy. I know plenty of people who struggle with story-level content at min ilevel, and I know they're trying. I'm not going to begrudge anyone for that.

ADR queue manipulation is still bullshit though.

For me, it is the sense of entitlement.

"I want the rewards, but I find this content hard/I don't like it, so I'm going to abuse the system to still get the rewards. I don't care if this makes the experience worse for other people."

The 24man raids aren't hard. Or even if someone does find them hard, they don't require you to actually be good at them. You can die at all the bosses 20 times each and your raid will still make it through.

This game is a multiplayer game. A lot of the systems require you to engage with other people.

I have a hardline stance - If you're manipulating the queues, you're an rear end in a top hat. Either queue regularly or don't queue at all.
