Next i got hotline miami, didn't work on my computer (64 bits) returned

Then i got blasphemous and played it for 20 mins and it was a piece of crap. RETURNED.

what next OP?

It should be fun and cool to play.

Nuclear throne was epic but no longer works on my new copy (64 bit)

so whats a good game that won't break the bank and isn't more complex and tedious than literally learning to code a game from scratch.

I'll effort post about some stuff I've played in the past few years and can vouch for. These are all mac native, can be found on steam, and won't require a fancy graphics card to run well. A lot of these may not even cause your laptop fan to spin up to max.

  • Hades - A great top-down hack 'n slash roguelite with a lot of heart and tons of story progression based around greek mythology (100+ hours easily, but there is story closure long before that and the rest is just a lot of extra flavor). The art is rich and vibrant and somehow manages to push both the Wholesome and Horny sliders to the max in a way that works perfectly. You should use a gamepad for this, don't try to play with a trackpad. Mouse and keyboard work ok, but a switch or xbox controller (or similar) is best.

If you like this style of game, I can also recommend Dead Cells. It's a side scroller rather than top-down game, but the basic gameplay is not that different. I played it before Hades, and after playing Hades I can't see myself going back to Dead Cells, but it's 100% worth checking out if you enjoy this genre.

  • Hypnospace Outlaw - This is a retro style game set in a fictional 90s era geocities-like web community. Your main interface is an in-game browser that accesses that web community, and you play a content moderator with assignments from the company that runs it. There's more to it than that, with a whole operating system simulation, but the basic gameplay is just reading a lot of users' pages and going down rabbit holes. There is also a narrative that unfolds as you do so. It's got an incredible soundtrack and walks the line between homage and parody of the early internet perfectly. It's also not super long (maybe 10-20 hours to do the main story depending on how much you explore).

  • Stardew Valley - A pixel art farming game with a ton of other stuff to do. It's a chill game that's pretty open ended, though there is a small overarching narrative and almost all of the townspeople have storylines you can progress through. There's a small amount of combat, but it's not that tough and mostly optional. This is a real-time game where day/night progress as you play (regardless of what you are doing) and cycles through the seasons. It has a lot of mods to add content or tweak any of the game systems that annoy you if you're into that (though I'd suggest playing without mods to start).

Personally I could never get into crafting games like minecraft and terraria because the grinding was too much and too in your face, but Stardew Valley clicked for me. It has crafting and gathering, but with enough other stuff to do to break up the monotony of it.

  • Disco Elysium - This is a text-heavy, point-and-click style RPG in a setting somewhat similar to post-Soviet Europe, but with its own unique and very deep lore surrounding politics, religion, science, ethnic culture, etc. You play a police detective investigating a murder. The character stats and skills are totally unique and allow a huge variety of ways to approach the game and discover your character. I can't overstate how fresh and good the writing is in this game. If you don't like a lot of reading in your games, then don't play this. But if you do, there is not much else out there that you can even compare to this work of art. I haven't replayed it since they did the big voice acting overhaul, but from what I've heard the game is in an even better state now than when I last played.

  • Baba Is You - This is a cute puzzle game where the rules of each puzzle are set by word combinations (such as "Baba Is You"), and you can rearrange the words to modify the rules until you meet or create the win condition. If that explanation doesn't make sense, just watch the trailer for it or watch someone on youtube play the first level or two and you'll get it. It's a simple concept that can get very clever and complex by the end.

  • Slay the Spire - This is a deck building card game that's a lot of fun. It's pretty similar in concept to a roguelite like Hades/Dead Cells, but the combat is turn based so you can play it more casually and don't need a controller. The mechanics are sound, but there's not as much story and atmosphere here as something like Hades. This is probably the weakest game on my list, but it's still very good and I highly recommend it if you are into card games.

Yeah you can get all three Marathon games open source for free, I think off AlephOne.net?

Do this, those games are absolutely phenomenal. Also if you can find a way to register a copy of Escape Velocity or EV:Nova can’t recommend those games enough. I think you’d have emulate system 9 or earlier for OG Escape Velocity though. EV: Nova should be available on osX platforms.
