Going by Twitter, only the absolute worst people disliked John Madden, and you can know someone by both their friends and enemies, after all.

These aren't just randos either, these are professors with thousands of followers and of course because of the ENGAGEMENT ALGORITHM it just loving shows up on my timeline even though I don't follow either of these shitheels.

I will say that being bedsheet white and claiming that video game football is plantation cosplay is particularly impressive.

I mean as a broadcast commentator was there a single more entertaining player to call games for than Favre for like a solid decade? And not because he was always good, the fact he could just embarrassingly suck too made it even more interesting.

Couldn't find a good link but here's a snippet of his HoF speech:

quote:

Here is the deal: I think over in the Hall of Fame, that during the day, the people go through, they look at everything. At night, there's a time when they all leave. All the fans and all the visitors leave the Hall of Fame. Then there's just the workers. Then the workers start to leave. It gets down to there's just one person. That person turns out the light, locks the door.

I believe that the busts talk to each other. I can't wait for that conversation, I really can't. Vince Lombardi, Knute Rockne, Reggie, Walter Payton, all my ex players, we'll be there forever and ever and ever talking about whatever. That's what I believe. That's what I think is going to happen, and no one's ever going to talk me out of that (laughter).

These guys are going, Oh, no, hope I don't have to put up with his BS for an eternity.

17.1. In late 1996, Madden and Summerall were coming to town for a Saints broadcast. A New Orleans radio personality mentioned that somebody ought to introduce Madden to the turducken, a Louisiana-invented meat monstrosity of duck and chicken stuffed into a turkey.

I should have known it was a Louisiana invention.

also, that article is Really Good. Highly recommend anyone here go check it out.

Can the bucket be the Giants GM?

Everyone acting like Madden invented video-game football.

His main contribution was licensing his name and likeness for the game and insisting he would only endorse an 11 on 11 player game (earlier video football games didnt account for all 22 players do to system limitations). The guys who programmed what was to become Madden Football figured out how to do it and he signed the endorsement deal.

I honestly thought this thread was for his documentary that was coming out.

RIP to the best.

As much of a meme as it is to mention the silly things he mentioned, no one was better at making Football approachable and instilling his love of the game into every broadcast. The random stuff is just the cherry on top.

Nobody except maybe Mrs. Johnston loved Moose Johnston more than John Madden did.

I recently went on a binge of watching games from the 90s on Youtube and it is staggering how much better Madden was than any of the dreck that has come since.

Hugely sad news. Madden was the voice of the sport when I started watching and there's never been anyone else like him. Seeing these old clips and reading all the stories about him has been a great way to remember him.

Is the All Madden documentary available for streaming outside the US? Or like the man himself is it only going to places accessible by bus and train?

John Madden envisioned a computer game that would act as a teaching tool for fans and students of the game alike and personally made it happen.

When Madden finally developed the truck stick in 2006, Paul Tagliabue is said to have fallen to his knees weeping and retired on the spot.
