I know a few people who use TikTok. They bounce between loving it and hating it. They tried to show me some videos and it just didn't interest me. I don't really care for soundbites of 10-30 seconds or whatever, I'm either gonna read shitposts at my leisure or watch a longer form video on something I specifically find interesting. The idea of being spoon fed a bunch of clips one after another for eternity is weird. People showing me the videos couldn't help but ask me to look at each one and after the third 12 second video I was like "yeah nah, sorry, this is actually pretty tedious". Also every time someone talks about getting their video from "left-Tok" or "queer-Tok" or "food-Tok" I laugh at them. I've asked them to explain it to me even tho I know what they mean, and when they're slowly explaining that the app just tailors what they want to feed them a continuous stream of the same poo poo they start getting embarrassed. When you have to admit you consume the same media over and over out loud to people who don't care about it you tend to feel like an idiot.

I've seen some TikToks that are funny and/or amusing. But I also read these stories of people doing cruel and hosed up things to friends and family for a TikTok joke and find that disturbing. IMO, it's not TikTok that is specifically to blame, but doing bad things to people you know for the amusement of the internet is very bad and we shouldn't do that.

I was on youtube, facebook, forums etc from my preteens onwards and I recognise now that a lot of it is really bad for you mentally. I've cut back on a lot of it, or tried to switch to less harmful forms (unsuccessfully so far, i spend way too much time on here now). I don't use twitter at all even though I could easily have gotten sucked into that as a teenager because the brain assault of that place is so obvious even I can manage to stay out of it. Some things just aren't good for you and just because kids love it doesn't mean it's progress. These are products where life-consuming addiction is their goal.
