I realize they're almost all made up but I've got to admit I enjoy the genre of tiktok stories where someone asks a question and then people answer with their elaborate and intimate stories. Like "What's a thing your parents told you that you realized later was a lie" or whatnot. I watch these in youtube compilations while I'm doing chores around the house, because I have no intention of ever installing tiktok on any of my devices.

I just opened it up. In order, I got: 1. A lady petting her cat and telling me how to get a shelter cat. 2. A cat stuck in a truck meowing super cute. 3. A video about why you might not make progress in therapy by a german sounding guy. 4. A girl selling her armpit hair to horny guys on the internet. 5. A makeup tutorial on blush application. 6. A lipsync with Isabelle from Animal Crossing cosplay. OOOOoooOOoOoo look out it's the cat > switch lite pipeline. I've been asking it to show me fewer angry trans teenagers (by choosing 'not interested'), not because I dislike trans people, but because I dislike teenagers. I'm old now. We'll see if it ends in me getting Alex Jones'd.

You just scroll and whatever comes next comes up. Even if you're searching for videos or looking at a particular person's page of videos, 99% of the time they just show the first few frames in a loop. I really wonder how this kind of stuff will affect people a generation down the line. Like when you see parents make kids be the butt of an unfunny joke. One (OK, admittedly many) time I had a big embarrassing meltdown on Xmas because I didn't get a toy I wanted. My mom was recording us on a camcorder at the time but was considerate enough not to record my meltdown. However, I see people not only record their kids reactions (often instigated via "joke gifts") but it gets put on these platforms for thousands of strangers to see. Even had my mom been cruel and recorded/shared my meltdown, only a handful of people would have seen it. But if this was a tiktok video I'd be the "Kid has a meltdown he didn't get a Nintendo" and devoid of context would have made me look pretty bad. I think it would be a lot harder to cope and move on if your embarrassment was broadcast for the world to see. Some people might shrug and figure, "who is going to know you as an adult were that kid? Just deny it" but people can be petty and viscious on the internet so it would only be a matter of time before it got weaponized in some way.
