i've had some gaming malaise because i can't play until the kids go to bed and by then i don't want to ram my head against the metroid dread final boss, but i shall overcome it so that i can get back to the last two parts of yakuza 5.

I'm saving for a down payment on a house so my goal is to actually play some of the dozens of free games I've downloaded from the epic game store and amazon prime. I've got some money set aside just in case I can actually buy a PS5 for Elden Ring other than that I'm trying to buy no new games this year.

I've been neglecting my gaming the past few years mainly due to anime/manga binging instead.

Some games I want to beat this year:

Yoshi's Crafted World
Captain Toad Treasure Tracker
Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth Complete Edition
Va-11 Hall-A
Rayman Legends
World of Final Fantasy

I also might take the plunge and finally play Bloodborne for more than 15 minutes.

I know this sounds so stupid lol but I get emotional thinking about FF7 because I got PSX for christmas 97 and played FF7 that entire break and beat it and things like fort condor, the entire shinra parts, fighting the zolom just brings out those same emotions where I couldn't believe a game like that existed back then, on that scale... its one of the most "next gen" moments I ever felt

When you consider this game came out in 1997 it's kind of insane, like there's been terrorist bombings, prostitution, entire populations of the slum wiped out and I'm still in the tutorial area lol, it's legit awesome. There's no way I would've been able to appreciate any of it at the time due to being a retarded baby, but I know the feel. I used to watch my sister play FF8 all the time and that felt like the "grown ups" game to me lol

the story is absolutely wild for the time... like I played FF6 and CT as a kid and a lot of the stuff went over my head, but for PSX FF7, Resident Evil 1 and 2, Metal Gear Solid, and Castlevania SOTN, and Silent Hill I was old enough to appreciate more than the fact I was "playing a game" I started to really absorb the themes the music the artwork ect and every time I replay any of those games it brings be back to that era all over again, and then I look at most modern games and feel sick lol

playing old video games has some kind of intense memory connection, I think, where you put down the controller and almost expect to see your old house. I think maybe it's because it sort of engages 3 of the senses because of the tactile feedback of playing the game. it kind of lets you remember how you experienced the story as a 10 year old for the first time. there are games I wish I could experience for the first time now, though, and final fantasy 7 is definitely one of them.

My first time with FF7 was the original version of the PC port that you could only control with the numpad.

It would barely run in certain spots because I was a dumbass kid that did not know what a graphics card was. I wedged a spoon into the keyboard and walked away in order to make it through certain especially laggy screens but I still was hooked enough to play through half the game before starting over when I managed to get the playstation version.

Everyone in my 5th grade class was playing through FF7 and we used to swap tips and discuss rumors. No one believed me when I said I beat Emerald Weapon. I never beat Ruby Weapon until about 15 years later when I looked up a materia setup that kills it for you.

I always used to use Vincent cause I thought he was a badass even though his limit breaks suck rear end.

Lol me and In Training played Curtain Call multiplayer, the battle mode, and it's absolutely insane because you constantly gently caress with your opponents screen with rotating markers, invisible markers, random markers and poo poo. You can't straight up fail the songs in multiplayer or it wouldn't be possible to finish one.

there's now a general fix-all compilation you just throw in the install folder that fixes sound without having to patch/re-encode files and enables proper widescreen support. like arf says, pcgamingwiki is an essential resource for making old games behave on modern systems

Another goal is to emulate some weirdo stuff. Wanna see what the wonderswan or the 3do have going on. Get some lynx action going.
WONDERSWAN: judgement silversword and cardinal sins are cool shmups (that have native pc and switch ports bundled in with the awesome eschatos). i've heard cool things about dicing knight, but i haven't played it myself just yet. i remember TLD saying positive things about a sim game based on junji ito's uzumaki, but i dunno if that has a translation yet
3DO: return fire is a badass local multiplayer game, tho it also has a ps1 port iirc. pataank is an incredibly 90s first-person pinball(!) game that doesn't, like, play well, but boy it's got a lot of shouting dudes and '50s stock footage. wolfenstein 3d is probably the best port of that game, doom is probably the worst for well-documented reasons.
LYNX: todd's adventures in slime world is weird and kinda neat. there's a genesis port that has music and lets you see more of the world at once, but it lacks a lot of the cool visual fx. some of the arcade ports like klax and stun runner are decent. gauntlet the third encounter is loving WEIRD and worth a glimpse.

you've got pretty decent taste so i'd be curious to hear your recommendations and thoughts as you go through those libraries. maybe i should do a "cool and weird poo poo you find in your rom folder" thread...

i think that was the metroid-style twist in that gunman clive series on 3ds? i think i only played the first one and it was a pretty mediocre megaman clone so i didn't go too far.

it's kind of stunning just how much game they put into just midgar alone, before you even see the world map. pretty amazing amount of restraint.

The ff7 remak is amazing ino and the action button review of it really made me appreciate the incredible music and even more. Like having notes of a one winged Angel arrangement when Aerith first appears. Mama Mia!

My breakthrough FF is X, so many hours poured into it and restarts because I didn’t understand anything but it was a super mature game for adults lol. My mother actually got me the really nice official strategy guide and ever since then I’ve bought pretty much ever other one off eBay or second hand sellers because it’s such a strong memory of childhood.

Anyway Otherworld is like the best boss song ever and unlocks deep memories for me

FFX doesn't have a bad story IMO, it's just that whoever directed the english voice acting wasn't very good.

final fantasy 8 does that YA fiction thing where it takes adolescent concerns and makes the stakes as high as they feel when you're teenager, but it's a particularly funny one because the world is plunged into an apocalypse because three different awkward dudes (laguna, squall, cid) couldn't figure out how to ask out a girl.
