Air Battle Managers, Air Traffic Controllers, and Flight Leads are boring and nobody cares.

https://giant.gfycat.com/AcclaimedDownrightAlligator.mp4

Bottom line up front: Some 25 goons will fly a plot-heavy campaign in the Caucasus region as an EU-NATO air force group with a military air combat simulator, with the weekly mission scheduled at 2000hrs Universal Time on saturdays.

So wots all this then?
DCS World is a flight sim with modules, individually purchased planes that simulate various helicopters and fixed wing aircraft of mostly the modern era. The game includes non-flyable AI assets, and tons of ground units of all kinds. Game requires a lot of patience, as these airplanes are started manually with each system modeled, and the nerds that fly them click the buttons in the cockpit to achieve what they need to do. The sim is good enough to be used by real air forces for training for planes, such as US Air National Guard for the A-10, and the French Air Force for the Mirage 2000. Our players will talk on the radio channels with air traffic control and air battle management, and they will use different channels to communicate with their wingmen. Each flight will have its own objectives as part of the package, and the flight leads will write up their plan before game day, and after the game, their after action report. Each days’ game will probably last about 1.5 hours to 2 hours. We’ll stream it both from the perspective of a pilot, and from the air battle manager station’s radar screen.

Does it sound complex? Oh gently caress yeah, it is! But it’s a lot of fun. We hope to attract the interest of non-plane goons and are more than happy to explain terms and describe what we do. Don’t hesitate to ask questions, and we look forward to sharing nerdery in this thread or the Discord.

Alright, so let’s dive into the set up:
:frogsiren: FIRST IRL GAMEDAY: 15 JAN, at 2000 UTC :frogsiren:
Georgian War 2008, Operation Pandora’s Box

Game Date: 01 August 2008, 0600 hrs
Map: Caucasus
Background: The relations between Georgia and Russia have worsened in the Caucasus. Initially it looked like peace was going to be an option, and both EU and NATO pledged their support for Georgia. President Medvedev viewed this as a slight to his concept of buffer zones, and President Bush’s aggressive foreign policy only worsened the divide. In the end of June of 2008, Russian military mobilized to the trans-Caucasus region, and in response, Georgian military was mobilized. EU and NATO assumed that placing military assets as so-called “tripwires” to the area would deter Russian aggression, and multinational air power was deployed to the area. The Coalition Air Forces decided to send a group of 22 planes as a Vanguard, hoping that attacking NATO and EU personnel would be a bridge too far.
However, that has not proven correct. Just after midnight on 01 August, Russian Forces crossed the border in Abkhazia, and fierce fighting began. Simultaneously, Russian cruise missiles headed to Tbilisi-Lochini International Airport placed EU-NATO forces in danger. The cruise missiles were intercepted by a Dutch Army Patriot unit, but the message was clear, Russia did not limit its force on Georgia alone.
The 22 plane air detachment has been titled Task Force 69 and it will fly under the command of the Aviation and Air Defence Command of the Defence Forces of Georgia.
Their Air Command has issued an order to strike Russian Armor at the Abkhazian border, along with a task to suppress enemy air defences. Russian interceptors are expected.

Big Picture:

This is the basic layout of the battle arena. Currently pictured are only major known SAM installations and airports. There is no intelligence available of specific russian air power deployments, but it is expected they will be mainly housed in Mineralnye Vody.

The frontline snapshot from Abkhazia looks like this:

The Air Defences of Georgia are lackluster, and probably not enough to keep Russian planes on their side. In just a few hours, they've already taken Abkhazia and reinforced the northern side of Patara Enguri river that separates Georgia proper and Abkhazia.

Situation on the frontline: Reports are hazy at this moment, multiple Russian penetrations into both Ossetia and Abkhazia happened around 0200hrs on 01 August. More intelligence will follow.

What is the enemy like?
Our enemy is a roughly 2008-Russia, with some artistic liberties. They will be using correct airplanes and weapons on them, but sometimes we might need to add something. Enemy Air Defences will also mostly follow realism, but perhaps the amount of SA-10s will have to be a bit reduced so we don’t get dunked out of the sky constantly.
Enemy air power is mostly MiG-29S and Su-27 fighters, with MiG-23 ground attackers and Su-24 strikers. Some Tu-95 long distance bombers might be in the mix, as well as Ka-50 and Mi-24 helicopters. Ground troops will be using T-72 tanks and the usual cadre of russian land warfare.

Air Task Force 69: "Big Blue Men"
Initial player squadrons at Tbilisi-Lochini International Airport

Tbilisi-Lochini International, or Shota Rustaveli Tbilisi International Airport.
UGTB. It’s the busiest airport in Georgia, but for this campaign, it has been quickly converted to a make-shift part-time military airport for the use of our foreign goon air task force. They will likely have to dodge past some civilian airliners.

“Wind Maker”, Luxembourg Air Wing, Luxembourg
15th Air Wing
E-3 Sentry
Role: Early Warning
Air Battle Manager: Kilonum

The player here will not actually fly the plane. The AI is flying it around in race tracks over friendly lines. However, the radar will see things, and these will be oggled by a screen that our Air Battle Manager uses from an external software called LotATC. They will use measurement tools and various map markers to guide and direct the air battle, effectively being the eye in the sky, and being able to be the one with the big picture in mind. The neat thing about LotATC is that the software will run from a potato, and so it can be used from really anywhere.

“Weasel 1”, Aeronautica Militare, Italy.
5º Stormo, 23º Gruppo
F-16C x4
Role: SEAD/DEAD, Strike
Flight Lead: Bear

These Italian Vipers are mainly assigned to defeat enemy air defences in this let’s play. The F-16 is a highly capable plane in all aspects, and even in plane-to-plane combat, it’s only weakness is that it only carries six missiles. The Viper doesn’t necessarily need any introductions, and it is one of the most popular modules ever. Stormo means “flock” in Italian for “Wing”, and the 5th Stormo was the fighter unit that mainly had F-16s during their Italian service. The 5th Stormo is a storied Italian unit with heritage from 1934 until 2010 when it was deactivated as Italy gave up the Vipers for Eurofighters.

“Jedi 1”, Hellenic Air Force, Greece.
335th, Tiger Squadron
F-16C x4
Role: Air Superiority, Strike
Flight Lead: Jabby

These Greek Vipers are assigned to interception and strike missions. They will be the ones who will first and foremost attack the ground units in this campaign, and hunt them with the targeting pod and laser guided bombs, or wreak havoc with cluster munitions. They will be more than able to defend themselves against enemy fighters, but they are often flying fat and heavy with fuel and ordnance and jettisoning these will fail their mission. The 335 Squadron is the oldest squadron in the Hellenic Air Force, dating back to 1941. The motto of the 335 Squadron, Αίεν Υψικρατείν, ("Always dominate the Heights") is now the official motto of the Hellenic Air Force.

“Devil 1”, Ilmavoimat, Finland
Hävittäjälentolaivue 11
F-18C x4
Role: Air Superiority, Strike
Flight Lead: Jarmak

The Finnish Hornets join this campaign as a way to show grandpa that the young ones made it farther east. The Hornet is a naval fighter, but used by many air forces. It is similar to the Viper in capabilities, albeit slower. However, it carries more fuel and more ordnance. The No. 11 Fighter Squadron was founded in 1973, and originally flew with Drakens. All modern finnish squadron are post-WW2 with the old war time units being frozen in time as heritage. The No 11 Squadron belogns to Lapland Air Command, and does QRF and air space enforcement over the part of Finland in the Arctic Circle. Finnish Hornets are not carrier capable nor trained.

“Devil 2”, Ejército del Aire, Spain
Ala de Caza nº 12
F-18C x2
Role: Air-2-Air, Strike
Flight Lead: Snapshot

These Hornets are similarly non-naval capable as the Finnish ones, and have been flown to hell and back ( a couple times) with the Spanish Air Force. Spanish Air Force has flown these hornets from early 1990s in the Yugoslav wars, various peacekeeping missions, NATO Air policing, and the inventory has only been some 76 airplanes, despite their tempo being high. In this story's time, year 2008, these Hornets were effectively clapped out. By 2003 already, Ala 12's Hornets had clocked a combined 100,000 flight hours. The unit would later on assist in the enforcement of Libyan no fly zone in 2011.

“Pontiac 1”, Oregon Air National Guard, USA
123rd Fighter Squadron
F-15C x4
Role: Air Superiority
Flight Lead:

The legendary Eagle is the superior air combat platform. This plane will mop the floor with any fighter in the world, and it will not run out of fuel nor missiles. Its downside is its inability to do any air to ground. It is a pure fighter. Oregon Air National Guard fighter jets have seen service all over the globe, and in a real peer war, they would some serious work.

“Pontiac 2”, US Navy, USA
VF-101
F-14B x4
Role: Air Superiority, Strike
Flight Lead: Angel

The Tomcat goes with volleyball like Jack goes with Coke. Of Top Gun fame, this plane is huge, beautiful, fast, and powerful. It’s AIM-54 missiles have a longer reach than anything else, and it can fly fast and high. It isn’t ideal for ground pounding, but can do it decently. The neat part of these planes is that in DCS and in this campaign, they will fly with two goons. A front seater who is the pilot, and the rear seater RIO, Radar Intercept Officer, who operates the radar and weapons, and uses the datalink. He or she often functions as the aircraft commander despite the lack of flight controls.
NATO aircraft carriers do not have the legal permission to travel through The Bosporus Strait, so these Tomcats have arrived to be land based from Tbilisi.

VF-101 was deactivated 2018, after becoming the first place in the Navy to fly the F-35C.

“Pontiac 3”, Luftwaffe, Germany
Jagdgeschwader 73 Steinhoff
MiG-29G x2
Role: Air-2-Air, Strike

To add some exotic flavor, we have a few East German MiGs that turned to the NATO side during German reunification. Their cockpits are partly converted into imperial measurements, and they show up in NATO datalinks. They struggle with the amount of fuel, and lack active radar missiles but up close, they are the fiercest dogfighter.

The unit is named after Johannes Steinhoff, a Nazi fighter ace, and a West German General who lived a storied career. Tactical Air Force Wing 73 was the only unified German unit to fly the old soviet MiGs. They were only considered good enough for point defence and rapid intercept, as their limited fuel and lack of multiple radios proved too limiting. In our goon server, these MiGs receive additional radios for our sanity’s sake. These fighters in reality finished out their service as aggressors for-rent for many NATO militaries, giving priceless knowledge of the MiG-29 in close combat. Funnily enough, the NATO documents of the shortcomings of the plane were later used in Russia to further develop their own planes.

“Enfield 1”, Georgian Air Force, Georgia
Mixed Aviation Squadron
Su-25T, x4
Role: Strike
Flight Lead:

Georgian Air Power isn’t too strong, but able to hold its own in the small country. The Air Force was its own branch until 2010, when it was dissolved and absorbed by the Land Forces due to its small size. The Georgian Frogfoots are obviously here because it’s Georgia after all. They’re a capable plane too, but most importantly it is a free plane. The Su-25T Frogfoot is included in DCS for free for everyone. To test out the game and partake, you don’t have to spend any money! But even if it is free, it is enjoyed by many veterans, too.

So, how will you partake in this? Dunno yet, this isn't all super well defined of what will happen and what this will entail in all its glory. Our flight leads will post in this thread of the plans for each game day, and some of the decision making that goes into it. Preferably in plain english so non-spergs can enjoy it, too. In addition, we will stream the game and the flights, and provide some edited recaps of highlights. We will also add a tacview track of the fights to analyze later on. I want to emphasize that we want you to participate, by posting, by writing, or whatever. If you have interest of any kind, please feel free to do suggestions and nudges. The goal here is to spark more interest in this niche flight sim and get more active players into our discord, and to spread the absolutely joyous fun of combat simulation.

Helicopter combat often does not mesh well with the fixed wing for IRL timelines due to flight times, so we will also have some helicopter heavy missions during different times where the same template will be used, but all player activity is helicopter based for CSAR and CAS. PErhaps when a player goon gets shot down, there'll be a chopper heavy CSAR task to follow in a few days.

If you'd like to see what goes into being a flight lead, and what kind of basic mil aviation stuff these goons fly with, check out our SOP. It isn't a ruleset to be obeyed, but sort of a guide line of the type of things you should know!
https://www.airgoons.com/w/Standard_Operating_Procedures

Prime made a nice video of a goon mission that's unconnected to this mission. You can see it here, it'll give you a decent idea what the goons in cockpit see: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EC9t7b0bUf8

We will also use Tacview to get realistic track files after the battle to analyze what happened and how we used weapons.

Mine is simpler and cheaper, but functional for the F-16. I mostly fly the F-14 but I like this sidestick layout.
Both I and Jarmak have a SimShaker in the seat, which vibrates, moves, and rumbles, based on flaps, gear, weapons, and G-forces. It's very immersive in the game and hilarious at the same time as you pull the gun trigger!

To fly in this campaign with a Su-25T? You're loving good enough my dude! To fly the other planes, you'd need some experience as most of those flights will be tasked to fairly demanding missions, and a week of getting your feet wet is probably not enough. But we do also fly outside of mission times for fun, and our 24h Goon practice server is a great way to fly any plane you want and asking for help will usually yield four dudes to carry you.

I recommend hopping onto the Discord, going to the DCS channel and saying you need some help getting started. https://discord.gg/NpHC33fYUD

The Su-25T module is free, so you're all set. We're also playing on the free map. The Frogfoot flight will be lead by a more experienced person to help you. You'll need an hour or two of practice beforehand but we're happy to help.

You’ll need to set up SRS, ask in the discord for help. Beyond that, to fly a SU-25t (the free attack plane included with DCS world) in the campaign you need to be able to:
Talk to your flight lead using SRS.
Start the aircraft (push 2 buttons together)
Taxi
Take off
Follow your flight lead
Fire weapons in the general area of the target
Try not to shoot goons
Crash in the general area of the airfield

For any of the other modules, the skills are a little more stringent. Come join us in the discord and we’ll sort you out.

from there the devs have a pretty good program that allows you to trial any of the modules for 2 weeks at a time and resets every 6 months.

^^ Please send feedback to beefstache911@hotmail.com, this is not a joke that 'stache is the real deal. Serious assessments only. ^^

To build off Vaha's post Sim pits are cool, but also you don't need one. I have just a stick, throttle and a head tracker sitting on my desk. I recommend a stick and throttle at the least simply because 90% of the functions you'll end up using are all meant to be accessible while either steering or messing with the throttle and moving around a keyboard is a little more dicey in the thick of things.

The primary clickable modules, like the F16, F18, F14, A10 etc are fantastic and if you've any interest in flight sims at all I recommend picking one of those up. Goons tend to argue endlessly about which one is the "best" entry level one, but pick one of those that sounds coolest to you. It does take a bit to pick up, but it's nothing insurmountable. But frankly, with a little help, it's not that bad to learn to startup (most modules come with an auto start sequence so you can skip this part), taxi, takeoff, drop a guided bomb or shoot a missile, then go back and land. To me it was a "easy to learn hard to master" kind of thing. There's a gently caress load of buttons but the majority of them don't really apply to what we do.

Alot of the missions in this campaign are going to be SEAD missions and believe me the level of skill needed to takeoff, somewhat stay near your wing leader, shoot a HARM or 4, and then fly home and log off isn't all that high even for the more complex modules.

I would also recommend the advanced skill of pressing ‘G’ somewhere in the middle. :cheeky:
The 25T is sluggish enough with the way it's usually loaded up — it doesn't need the extra drag from the landing gear.

Feb 11, 2014

I’m Dandywalken, and for the purposes of this Let’s Play, I will be the officer in Georgian Air Force, representing Aviation and Air Defence Command, and it relying information to the Air Task Force 69. Flight leads may ask me questions if something is unclear, and you might or might not get an answer. When real units are named, their composition and capabilities will try to match reality as closely as possible! The ingame time corresponds with reality and for example moon phases are reflected.

We’d prefer game pertinent-questions to be asked on the thread rather than discord so that people can read it.

First Intelligence Snapshot:
From: Aviation and Air Defence Command of the Defence Forces of Georgia
Time: 0415hrs, 01 August, 2008
METAR: OVC9/16 Broken OVC23-24/31-33 VIS 10SM

Georgian Special Warfare operators near the border have photographed multiple Russian armored and mechanized columns headed towards Georgia proper from the towns of Gali and Repo-Etsen. They are assumed to be heading towards the six major river crossings of Patara Enguri river that are circled here in the picture. This would enable them access to Georgia proper. Patara Enguri separates the autonomous Abkhazia from Georgia itself.
From west to east, they are the Anakha bridge, Meore-Otobaya Bridge, Zeni-Koki Bridge, the Rike bridge, Pahulani Bridge, and the dam of Inguri Dam.
The precise coordinates, and where this map was taken from, can be found either ingame maps, or this online map tool that has the coordinates in lower right.

https://dcsmaps.com/caucasus/openlayers

It is important that the strike leads of Jedi 1, Devil 1, and Enfield 1 will begin to coordinate with each other how to label these bridges, how to divide the area, and who has responsibility over which one. They should also give names for the bridges for easy identification.

The two west bridges are photographed here.

As of this moment, the latest information we have is that the unit assigned to the first crossing  is 42nd Guards Motor Rifle Division. (For game reasons, due to T-62 not being in DCS, the unit uses T-72Bs) We hope to have this information before our scheduled sortie time of 0600hrs.
We assume T-72Bs, BMP-1s, and some command units. The unit’s 1203rd Air Defence Missile Regiment is likely using a few Tunguskas which will be distributed among each column. Further, each column will likely include a train of logistics vehicles and other attached resources like anti-tank squads.

SEAD lead, Weasel 1, currently the amount of enemy air defences near the border is unknown. More information is being collected by ELINT aircraft from the Swedish Air Force flying over the Black Sea.

Pontiac flights stand by for report on Russian air units. However, a few Hinds and Hips are above the convoys.

Current ROE:
Air-2-Air: Do not fire on any aircraft that is in Russian airspace. Any non-friendly airplane over Abkhazia and Georgia has to be confirmed hostile through Air Battle Management.
Air-2-Ground: Military vehicles that are near, or about to cross, the bridges that are marked, or already on Georgian side are to be destroyed. No cluster munitions due to civilian considerations. We do NOT want to destroy the bridges. The enemy units will be destroyed before or right after the bridge.

Safe airports: Any airport is supported on Georgian side for emergency landing, unless Senaki-Kolkhi is threatened by these forces.

The likely game outcomes: If the attack is repelled, the frontline sits where it is and Georgian Army will be able to reinforce this area.
If a significant amount of attackers penetrate into Georgia proper, there will be day 1 territorial losses, including likely the Airfield of Senaki Kolkhi.

Flight leads: use DCS, map tools, screenshots, whatever you need to draw up preliminary plans, and post them here. Before end of this upcoming saturday, you should have some basic task division.

The next intelligence snapshot will be then, and will represent game time of 0500hrs on 01 August 2008. This will include a  big picture of the Russian air units in the area.

Jesus, kid, you're almost a detective. All you need now is a gun, a gut, and three ex-wives.
This sounds awesome. One of these days I'll find the time to actually get some flight hours in on DCS and try and do one of these events.

Did you just say awesome?
Enfield 1-2 checking in, got my tracksuit on and ready to fire off some vikhrs.

Looks like a 300nm round trip, so the Su-25T's are going to need some extra fuel if we want to be able to stay over target for more than a few minutes. I was thinking that perhaps the faster moving Strike craft of Jedi and Devil could scout the bridges to see where the Frogs need to go since they will have a combined 64 anti-tank missiles in the Viks alone.

It's a radial!
A few questions:

What is the range from our starting airfield to the target?

What is the range from the target to the closest friendly field to rearm and refuel?

Will we have friendly support assets? AWACS? Airborne tankers? Blue SAMs? And if so, where are they located?

To the target from the start, its 151nm. There will not be available rearming airports on Day 1, as the airfields are primarily civilian. Kutasi will offer refuel services tho, albeit not unlimited.

Friendly AWACS and tankers are to be present. Blufor SAM systems are expected to be a non-factor currently; most are still being mobilized further back.

In the event of Russian progression, the Blufor SAMs will be a presence in the next scenario. Expect S-75 and S-125 tier stuff though, no Patriots etc to help.

It's time to kick the tires and light the fires, Big Bird.

Cpt. Wrath "ninjahedgehog" Cough, 123rd Fighter Squadron, Oregon ANG checking in. I'll be flying as Pontiac 1-1, leading the squad of F-15Cs to ensure air superiority for the strike package.

The Eagle is kind of a weird plane in DCS -- it's one of the low-fidelity planes included in the Flaming Cliffs 3 pack, meaning its cockpit is non-clickable and a lot of systems like the radar, IFF and INS are greatly simplified or nonexistent. Despite that, it's arguably the most lethal A2A platform in the game, matching or exceeding the Tomcat in speed, altitude and maneuverability but swapping out the long range AIM-54 Phoenix with the mid-range, but much more advanced, AIM-120 AMRAAM. It can sling this missile higher and faster than anything else in the sky and is an absolutely capable dogfighter to boot.

However, its radar can only pick up aircraft in a ~120-degree cone in front of it, and it lacks the advanced datalink capabilities of more modern aircraft like the F-16 or F/A-18. Pontiac flight will thus be relying heavily on the AWACS to direct us to targets -- Put something on our 12 o'clock and it will die, but if they're out of our radar gimbals they may as well not exist.

All that said, it's a fantastic starting plane for anyone looking to get into DCS, as I did about a year ago. IRL the Eagle has a perfect A2A record of 104 kills and zero losses, so Pontiac flight is gonna have a hell of a lot to live up to.

kafkabot mk. II: stronger, faster & more alienated
Oberstleutnant Franz "MadDog" Kafka, 20th-century german-speaking bohemian novelist turned Luftwaffe fighter ace, leading the MiG-29G duo of Pontiac 3 to intercept any threats to the package.

The DCS implementation of the Fulcrum is simplified like the Eagle -- it is another one of the low-fidelity jets included in Flaming Cliffs 3.

Strengths

It features some advanced tech for its age, including a helmet-mounted queueing system for off-boresight R73 "Archer" missile shots, a feature that NATO didn't get right until ~2003. The cockpit provides excellent visibility and it has several close-range radar modes that make it relatively easy to lock up targets that are within visual range. It is extraordinarily maneuverable, especially at low speed, making it a capable post-merge dogfighter. It turns at 28 degrees per second, which beats out even the block 50 F-16's we have in DCS. It features an Electro-Optical tracking system (IRST) that passively uses heat like the loving Predator, instead of actively using radio waves, which allows you to lock up targets without using radar. This means that their Radar Warning Receiver will not be alerting them to the lock, allowing sneaky Fulcrum pilots to hide from the enemy's radar using terrain-masking, lock up said enemy, and fire an Extended Range Infrared missile at them which can hit with literally no warning (with very few exceptions, and this is 100% terrifying to be a human on the receiving end of). Take it from the source:

Johann Koeck, Oberstleutnant posted:

Inside ten nautical miles I’m hard to defeat, and with the IRST, helmet sight and ‘Archer’ I can’t be beaten. Period.

Weaknesses

There are several marked weaknesses in the fighter meta of DCS, because it's literally a 50-year-old machine. The radar is rather limited, in general. It has a hard time differentiating targets flying in close formation, it has almost zero autonomous features, and it lacks the situational awareness of the western fighters with datalinks/GPS. There is no moving map, the target information you get is rough approximations of size based on how big of a radar return it's receiving, and it does not explicitly tell you what altitudes the flashlight is pointing at when you start slewing the antenna down and up. This makes it highly dependent on Ground Control Intercept radar or AWACs for vectoring and routing to/around known threats. The MiG's engines are the original thirst trap, in the sense that they decimate your fuel reserves, especially in the high-speed, low-altitude flight state described above. The effective patrol range is between 100 and 150 miles, whereas the Tomcat's range (designed to loiter on long patrols around Carrier groups) is about 5 times that. Even with drop tanks, it is an interceptor/air superiority fighter capable of 1-2 engagements, then it's going home to refuel. Lastly, it only carries Semi-Active Radar Homing missiles, which must be guided by the MiG's radar or IRST system the whole way to the target... limiting it's ability to engage multiple incoming targets simultaneously.

Overall, in meta terms, the Fulcrum is a superb knife-fighter and a sneaky interceptor. Definitely will be a shocker for any red air elements that want to play fast/loose with the Georgian border.

This is for goddamn sure, and will be one of the most dangerous things the Pontiac flights will face during the campaign. Only real way to beat it is to assume the bandit has fired at about 25 nautical miles, pre-emptively drop flares and defend, or light off your own missiles at maximum range with the hope of making the bandit go defensive and ruining his shot.

Otherwise poof, you're dead instantly and have no idea why until you load up the tacview. :ussr:

I'll have company coming over smack in the middle of this flight (covid notwithstanding) but I'm interested in DCS as I have never tried it yet. How often do these flights happen?

I am moderately proficient with IL2, have a T16000m full hotas and rudder setup and a reverbG2 VR set.

I'll definitely jump in I was just wondering how often these big group things happen because I definitely won't be able to make this upcoming one as my current plans conflict with it.

We fly every week -- Saturdays are typically well-tested tightly scripted missions involving goons flying NATO planes against red air, and Sundays are usually weirder. Sometimes it'll be an air race, other times a WWII a Cold War gimmick flight, or a test run a new mission before it goes into the Saturday lineup.

You're probably going to want some time to familiarize yourself with the plane and do your key mapping anyway
