Strongthoughts:

Manageable length episode. We have Kevin!

1) DKC vs TJP. Lose the headband, DKC. But keep doing that running dropkick, that was beautiful. Wish this building was better lit. TJP is a better heel than he ever was a face. DKC has figured some things out, he's got way more fighting spirit than he used to, and his offense is more believable.

2) Keita Murray and Jordan Clearwater vs Hikuleo and Chris Bey. Hikuleo is very tall. I'm just pointing out his defining characteristic. Not seen Keita before. He's quick and agile and I think he and Bey would have a good singles match. Clearwater is growing on me a bit. It felt like he was treading water for a while but he's now stepping up as proper heavyweight. This is a pretty good fun tag, lots of fun size disparities. The more I see of Keita the more potential I think he has. But I keep thinking that commentary are calling him Kitamura. Solid, enjoyable tag.

3) Eddie Kingston vs Gabriel Kidd. Been wildly impressed by Kidd recently. King's Road vs Strong Style is a great simple story. This is great from the start. Kidd goes in technical, Eddie is full volume character. We get some superb strike exchanges. gently caress, this is great. Pissed off Kingston trying to start a fire, fighting spirit Kidd trying to stand toe to toe. Super physical, super emotional, and (and this is an odd word to pick) educated. This is a match that knows its history. Make the time to watch this one.

I'm finally watching Wrestle Kingdom Night 1 because I guess I've got to face reality that Shingo is losing the title.

I really should have just skipped the undercard because this is some real Road To... Korakuen Hall 15th Consecutive Night energy. Nothing is actively bad so far, even the Ranbo was...alright, but I'm 2 weeks behind on AEW, have 4 NOAH shows, 3 DDT, 2 Stardom, 1 AJPW & 1 DG show all to watch to be caught up. I'm wasting time here with a BUSHI match about to start.

I'd say between the two nights of New Japan only WK you have one event of very good matches:

Shibata / Narita,
Chaos / Tekkers,
Despy / Hiromu,
Kazu / Shingo
Junior tag three way
Saya & Tam / Mayu and Kid
Naito / Cobb
Tana / Kenta
Kazu / Billy Brexit

That's a tight nine match show. It's just that it was wallowing in filler.

The EVIL/Ishii match is worth watching, just to watch someone pull off the impossible and have a bad match with Ishii. It's not a bad Wrestle Kingdom, but it definitely feels lesser in quality than the last 4 or 5 years.

They don't have the depth to do 2 shows of the WK scale. That's always been the case but especially so right now.

That corner dropkick from Shibata is such a thing of beauty. Violence can be a form of beauty under the right light, right?

Somehow i avoided seeing this WASN'T a catch rules Match. That's a glorious swerve.

Ren needs to learn to check those leg kicks. Rad stuff honestly. That said, and I know trying to work out the psychology of clap crowds is folly, but did the crowd seem a bit flat?

Shibata grabbed the microphone at the beginning of the match and changed the rules. Meltzer reported it was a shoot, but VOW says it was planned. Meltzer also reported that Shibata had his brain removed so I'm going with VOW.

The crowd were into it, it's just that Tokyo Dome has poo poo acoustics for wrestling even when it's full of screaming people so only jesus pops like Naito winning the belt sound good there.

I think the crowd was just respectfully watching

the loudest pops I heard during WK was in the O-Khan/SANADA match whenever O-Khan did a cool babyface move, and it's no surprise that he does cool babyface moves even better than SANADA.

I've fallen off of NJPW in the last two years. The only shows I watched during the pandemic was parts of the 2020 G1 and the New Japan Cup

I'm thinking of getting back into it now. Have there been any standout matches in those last two years? I don't mean merely "very good" stuff but the royal kinda stuff. I'll watch this year's wrestle Kingdom in the next few days but I figured it can't be hurt to get some good stuff that happened in the timeframe that I missed out on as an appetizer.

I think no promotion I watched in 2021 had as many standout matches as New Japan to be honest with you. I have 8 matches at 4.75 & 2 at 5. Plus another 13 at 4.5 & 20 at 4.25 & 21 at 4*. So yeah, just focusing on the very best stuff

The Cameo

You could check any major match Shingo had in 2021 and you’ll get something spectacular. Honestly, real MVP of any promotion the whole year, he made a NEVER title match come off as a legit main event (ever wanted to just hear El Phantasmo mark the gently caress out? Takagi/Tanahashi at New Beginning in Nagoya).

It’s actually kinda awesome, you can go from WK15 to WK16, and watch him go from being the bottom-tier singles belt holder to walking into the Dome in 2022 as IWGP World champ on a six-month reign and, having watched his big matches throughout the year, you can go “yeah, he more than deserved this spot”.

Also, watch Shingo's Dragon Gate run, it's tremendous work :)

I'm not so big on NJPW Shingo as other people are because I think the Bushiroad main event formula dilutes his intensity. He works best in shorter matches to highlight his explosiveness, and that's why my favorite New Japan Shingo match is still Shingo/Cobb in WK15.

Golden Series cards are out. The Sendai show has Master Wato's first big main event against El Desperado. The Osaka show has EVIL/Ishii in a lumberjack match as the semi main and Okada/Tanahashi vs. Naito/SANADA. Night 1 in Sapporo has Robbie/TMIV vs Ishimori/Phantasmo for the junior tags, Goto/Y-H vs EVIL/Yujiro for the tags and the main is Tanahashi/SANADA for the US title. Night two has Suzuki/Yano for the KOPW, HOT vs Goto/Y-H/YOH for the six man and Okada/Naito for the IWGP
