I'm happy because Derek Hartley (of the long-gone Derek and Romaine on Sirius, which they moved online after Sirius axed the channel) got another script produced.

I somehow made it through the first two, so why not another?

:yeah: I admit that tonight was the only episode of CvtW that I watched this season but 100% agree.

Also, I learned today that the WoW app now has variable playback speed. That's going to help a lot with keeping up on series. If I'm interested but not feeling it, just set it at 2x + subtitles!

they did a rare thing and used a lipsync tournament to reward the person who did the best in the lipsyncs, which I think might be a first

Good on her though, and good on cvw for pulling out of the ukvw nosedive at least somewhat, pretty fun season.

My overall assessment of CvtW: Whereas UKvtW had high highs and low lows, CvtW was consistently at a 7. Still had a fair share of iconic moments on the runway, but I think the real highlight were the queens' bonds. Apropos for Canada, it's RuPaul's Best Friends Race at its best.

Canada vs The World Ra'Jah winning cements her as one of my favourite queens ever. To go from hated to arguably robbed fan fave to winner is such a journey, and to never have any grudge towards the people that treated her like poo poo on S11 proves she's a good person. Between this and the alleged tea for S15, my interest in Drag Race may be renewed again.

It's especially heartening to see it happen to an older (by DR standards) queen from a newer season. Hopefully it'll encourage them to cast more queens who are old enough to have been doing drag before Drag Race was a thing. Also, repeat that sentiment for DIY queens who don't spend a ton of money paying designers to make their drag.

Been watching the new season of We're Here despite some misgivings about CW: sexual assault by Shangela in the past against members of the crew of the show and it's very disturbing to get a visual understanding of what's going on in America. Like yes the first few seasons were kind of rough for LGBT non-tolerance in the States but it's starting to get very "I am glad they have security."

alf_pogs

CvTW! love to see Rajah win; she has always given great confessions since her first season and is just a charisma machine.

overall though drat the season was wildly toothless. there has to be some middle ground between the soul-rending emotional devastation of Dragula and the rot-your-teeth sweetness of Drag Race.

minor effortpost but i think generally i need some time away from Drag Race until it starts to shake up its formula. to me, it's started scanning as really cheap purely because of repetition. the formula doesn't even matter what country you're in: just rent two soundstages, use the runway / judges panel / work room that you always use, maybe change a light color or something. assemble a season's worth of challenges that are usually from other seasons. insert queens, roll camera.

i am sure there's so much cost-efficiency built into this, and i've truthfully no idea what the average profit per episode is. as a viewer, though, it would be cool to see a bigger on-screen budget. hire some sketch writers for your comedy bits! get the Queens to do a challenge out of the work room for once (they even used to do this in a few early seasons, and i can only assume it would be less of a poo poo-show now.) do some editing of the runways or videoclips that scans as contemporary, with a more aggressive editing style ala Dragula.

anywho i can't tell if it's just me sucked into the repetitive nature of it. surely saturation point will hit and they'll either change it up or scale it back.

With other shows, I've given myself permission to stop watching when they no longer sparked joy for me. I let myself stop watching The Walking Dead after they kept on messing with the audience, culminating in a fake out death for Glenn, followed up by a real death for Glenn. I'm a big Bravo fan, and felt compelled to watch every housewives franchise for a while, but dropped a few (Jersey, Beverly Hills, OC, Dubai) when the cast was too unlikable or the drama was no longer fun. With competition shows like Drag Race, it's tough to follow that policy exactly because they change up the cast every season. A good cast can make a good season (except for season 7 which had a great cast but a terrible season), and a bad cast can tank a season. Season 14 and All Stars 7 were phenomenal after the previous 2 or 3 seasons were not so great. And the last 2 seasons of both Canada and UK were not good. It's hard to know where to cut it all off, but I think if there's nothing good going on in the first few episodes, then I feel ok dropping it.

Silky seemed to have done the same in the All Stars I saw her in (i have not watched anything this year) but I think she'd overcorrected there because it was still so soon.
Jaremi on the other hand has in fact gotten better and has stayed better, but competition does poo poo to him and the edit doesn't help.

There's something to be said about how much the edit can do because you did say what they're airing, but context removal and distance from the conversation can really paint a picture of yourself as others see you and Ra'jah thankfully did the healthy thing when you see yourself be an rear end on TV.

Silky is such a weird case, because while I'd say she was clearly carried to the final by production in S11, they also gave her a lovely edit regarding her "nasty looks".

They would constantly cut to Silky "glaring" during the judgements (either when she was being critiqued or when others were being praised)...except she's not glaring, she's squinting because she doesn't wear her glasses in drag. Several other contestants vouched for her, like "No, she just literally couldn't see."

:gowron::m10:
CAvtW was the completion of Silky's redemption arc. She overcorrected in AS6, but at least got to redeem her awful No Scrubs lip sync and showcase her cred as an entertainer. But despite pretty much starring in an entire episode, she didn't get much time in the werkroom to display her personal growth. This season, there wasn't a hint of that S11 toxicity or AS6 hesitation, and her rapport with the UK girls was pretty endearing.

Ra'Jah's redemption arc is definitely the most satisfying in the series. Basically Roxxxy's but with a glow-up instead of a glow-down (in terms of success in the competition). I remember being torn about liking her in S11. I couldn't deny her negativity, but there were glimpses of her star power and of course she was entertaining in confessionals. I still think about her in the backstage at Seduction minichallenge now and again ("it's my... my good fur"). I also maintain she didn't deserve to be in the bottom the episode she went home.

I always had a soft spot for the S11 outfit Ra'jah went home in. I'm a sucker for "pants on the runway" (even though they're controversial or something), and that big green braid immediately made me think "Harvest goddess", like from the Harvest Moon games or something.

I remember turning to my partner and going "Is this our first time seeing a giant green braid on the RPDR runway? Because I like it!" Very anime, even if it wasn't the intention.

I agree! I liked the look very much and at the time of viewing, I was very confused as to why they'd get rid of her for innovating and creating something good. I was a very "sweet summer child" and didn't know reality tv, even competition shows, ALWAYS have an objective to meet.
