The show is pretty eh before Gus Fring is introduced. So many boring side plots. I almost quit at the end of season 2 since the ending was so bad. Season 4 is where it's at though if you can make it there so good

GOOSE FUCKER
A lot of the villains in Breaking Bad reminded me of Tobias Funke and the hot cops pretending to be gangsters and doing West Side story. The best character in Breaking Bad was Skinny Pete.

People dislike Skylar not for some moral failing but because her face/voice is kinda annoying and she is named Skylorb. Nowhere near as bad as the girlfriend in Dexter who you have to fast forward just to realize that hey this show totally sucks, who told me to watch this?

We demand to be taken seriously

Fans were too hard on Skyler for bad reasons but some of the dislike was understandable when she was written to be the “stop doing all this cool stuff” character. They seem to have taken a note on that with Kim on Saul so she is very aware of his character and schemes but has agency and isn’t a victim, and it works much better.

Regarding Wire I liked it, still odd how the showrunners pulled off “write what you know” so we got strong police/street stories and the school arc was well done, then they decided season 5 would be to settle grudges with the print newspaper industry and it was weird and not relatable.

It was okay, didn't get the hype that much but for me the funnest thing about it was Walt just being a huge dork trying to be gangsta constantly, he was such a dumb rear end it was very fun to see.

Didn't care for the Jesse suffering porn aspect. Gus frinks was one of the best villains in a tv show though, great guy.

Likely because David Simon was still convinced that he was 100% correct every time the chief editor or owner killed his stories or ideas when he was still just a reporter in the Baltimore Sun. So the "good guy" journalists were always the best but went unnoticed or unthanked, the one who got famous and became the editor's favorite was cheating, and the owners were just the meddling executives too stupid to understand the art that is being journalist. And "the best of the best" got shitcanned because he was too difficult to work with.

D. Simon may be skillful in several important aspects needed by an author, but self-criticism and introspective insights aren't two of them.

Agreed, life is funny and if you're gonna make the show feel lifelike there's got to be a ton of laugh out loud stuff. See also Six Feet Under, Rome, Deadwood, The Wire, all the greats.

For All Mankind is great at this

in fact, after finishing For All Mankind S2 this weekend I'm gonna say it's the best show since Twin Peaks S3 and before that the Golden HBO era. it really is that loving good. I am kicking myself for waiting so long to watch it - just brilliant characters, humour, drama, action, it's everything you want in a show.

I was super hype for S6 of The Expanse but I just stopped watching it for now in favour of FAM - miles better.

Walt is no "crime lord" at any stage of the show. He never has any serious loyal muscle behind him -- basically just paid hitters and his dipshit ex student. He's a dork who happens to have a highly marketable skill in the criminal underworld. He stumbles around in his neckbeard quality hat and gets incredibly lucky that he isn't killed every 3-4 episodes.

Jesse is a sniveling, whiny druggie whose parents loved him, he's gifted a nice house and he shits on them and everyone else because he can't control his emotions. Jane and Andrea were both stupid characters and I didn't care at all when either died.

Mike was legit but they dumbed him down in season 5 and he (surprise) gets tricked by "genius" Walt. When Walt stole the methylamine Mike could've easily beaten/tortured him to give it up.

Discuss.

That’s true, especially as the state of unions, schools, or drug issues are understandable and relatable to an audience but the newspaper nonsense felt self indulgent. Like that stuff is fine in Zodiac where it’s a critical part of the real story but this felt like if in S5 of breaking bad Walt had ranted against how Vince Gilligan’s neighbors maintained their yard.

It was fun to read about the making of the Wire and how in the early seasons Idris Elba was mostly unknown but later women catcalling him from windows would disrupt filming. Or how the Bubbles actor got confronted by set security when he tried to get lunch as they thought he was a vagrant, and he’d be congratulated at parties for overcoming his addictions and be annoyed as it was just a character he played. Or if people were blasting music near a set they’d be happy to turn it down if Method Man asked them to do so.

I've said this before, but BB's success very much has to do with streaming. Everybody could binge, get caught up. The show did improve as it went on, and that momentum coincided with Netflix's booming usage. Even the rise of social media played a part because suddenly everybody could post and share HOLKY gently caress moments, not just goons and message board account havers. The right point in time catapulted this great show into the stratosphere.

I've never seen BCS, but from what I gather online, many consider it superior to BB. But I don't even know anybody IRL that gushes or even talks about BCS, even the big BB fans I knew. I did a lot of bartending around 2010-12 and BB was constantly talked about, it seemed everybody was a fan or becoming one.

I thought it was overrated by the end of season 2 and people were talking about how it was the best show on tv. But I think it did come around in the seasons after that.

More than that, with binging, if you see a bad episode you can immediately move on to the next one. If the good episodes are really amazing, you're probably going to forget the bad episodes and remember the good ones. That leaves you with a generally better impression of the series as a whole. Watching week to week or season to season lets all those bad parts sit in your mind and taint your feelings about the show.

There is the one episode where jesse is held hostage by the two meth heads. After that, I thought it was weird when he felt so bad about the kid being killed after the train robbery since he saw a neglected kid at the end of that and should have already made a connection between what he's doing and the lives it destroys. Nah, instead it's never mentioned again and maybe vaguely contributes to his character arc.

AMC, hmm. I'm curious, does Breaking Bad share writers or producers/directors with The Walking Dead? There is this thumbprint of writing style that rarely appears on Breaking Bad that I noticed increasingly on The Walking Dead before I gave up on that show. I can't put my finger on it, but it's this feeling of the writers having no idea how to proceed or bridge into the next plot point, so they lean on grit and disgust in order to provoke an "anything but this would be nice" response from the audience, making the awkward jump to the next part of the story less jarring.

I think a common thing for most show runners is to just write the season and not worry about anything else. I suppose they fear they'll get cancelled if there's not car chases and guns every 7 minutes.

StrangersInTheNight posted:

Walt rapes his pregnant wife in the first few episodes and I put down the show and never came back. It was clear how the show was gonna go from there, just the cheapest string-pulling bullshit. I hate that poo poo, using 'casual' rape to build character development.

And it's amazing to me how often the show comes up and people either blow over that ('it was to show he's already too far gone!' or some BS), or worse, didn't register it as/ didn't even realize it was rape :psyduck:

There's a scene in the second episode or something where Walt has rough (consensual) sex with Skyler. I think that was his attempt to try and re-create that for some reason and he pushes her up against the fridge and they both stop. Its really odd and that angle never happens again.

Poohs Packin posted:

Iirc she also barely attempts to work despite being a qualified accountsnt and walt pulling chump change and having a kid with a serious disability. Shes not very likeable.

She was selling junky knick knacks on eBay I believe. I suppose she might have stopped working for care for Walt Jr which makes it hard to get back into a career. Most of the Skyler hates comes from the toxic online fan base at the time. Most fragile male egos didn't like that someone had the audacity to hate their husband for doing very illegal things. Walt Jr turns his dad in but no one is calling him a oval office in online forums. I believe Anna Gunn even wrote an article called "In Defense of Skyler White" or something like that. It honestly reminds me of Charmaine Bucco from the Sopranos, who is the only sane and moral person on the show.

The show definitely went on for too long. Season 4 is when they throw logic out the window and write solely for the drama. There's no way Jesse is running a drug den in the middle of a nice neighborhood without any law enforcement getting involved. Jessie was also stealing excess meth and reselling it and there is no loving way Gus didn't know. The DEA is ready to close the case when Gayle is found dead but I find it very unlikely that they've not found any more blue meth on the streets. Hank is all but done with it until Walt gets drunk and his ego takes over so he tells Hank, "Oh that guy isn't the master, someone showed him!".

The real enemy of the entire series is Walt's ego. The guy is a raging rear end in a top hat and he puts everyone in danger just to prove a point. I can't remember if they ever explain why he left Grey Matter to become a high school teacher (for $48,000 a year) but I assume it was to prove someone wrong.

Better Call Saul is good but they are benefiting from hindsight. I think Vince Gilligan is milking that drat show for all its worth because I don't know what else he's got in mind and X-Files is over.
