Holy gently caress, I want to live in that world so bad...

Seriously, I LOVE the rain. Everything is gray and dark and cold and beautiful, the world moves more slowly, everything is totally zen, you get to layer your outerwear and be all cozy (and stylish!), the sound is so soothing, ohmigod rain is the best. I think my idea of Heaven is, if nothing else, a big warm, comfy bed where you can lie there and listen to rain on the window and just be perfectly content for all eternity.

same 100%. it feels like the world takes a little nap when its raining and you have it all to yourself.

nah I wish! A lot of the gifs are just ripped wholesale from various anime movies; the gif in the op is a background from King of Fighters 99. here's the pre-storm companion version:

And what about the rain? Have you seen this? Doesn't it feel like it's been raining forever? Do we ever get a break?

No. The rain is as infinite as it is mandatory.

Sleet happens. Only the real wet kind though and it hates itself for its entire existence before returning to rain.

you get more and more nervous, surmising everyone here must think you're a big weirdo, and glibly blurt out an explanation. Everyone but you laughs suddenly, and we explain we thought you were saying "waning" and that you hoped that the rain would lessen, which made US feel weird and awkward. We all laugh again, together this time, and then we all invite you to smoke a huge blunt with us in the gazebo. The rain pours down harder.

yes.

YES!

the rain continues unabated. sometimes it lessens to a gentle but steady drizzle, other times it ropes down in torrents that make you fear the window will shatter.

lenticular printing, the kind that changes depending on the angle you're looking at it, would be one way to do it. you can, apparently, get an animated 5"x5" lenticular print made at walgreens for $3.99. I don't know if the technology is inherently much more expensive for bigger pictures but I wouldn't think so, however maybe with a larger image it's harder to render each frame distinctly across the entire picture.

oh man this reminds me of a book from my childhood, it had a number of black and white drawings that you could animate using barrier grid or "picket fence" animation (it's also called "scanimation" I guess). basically you had this clear plastic sheet with lines on it and by slowly moving the sheet over the image it created the appearance of motion. I bet that book had some rain images, the one I remember most vividly was a bunch of moving parts of a watermill.

here's a kitty animated using that technique:

apologies for the detour, back to rain eternal

e: apparently the use of lenticular printing for album covers etc. has a decent amount of precedent. from wikipedia:

this may not be rain, but it is really interesting!

the MIT museum in Boston has a massive collection of holograms and some of them are pretty amazing
