Hello and welcome to the ADTRW Japanese Pro Wrestling thread! I think that you guys would appreciate pro wrestling here, as it is very similar to shonen. But enough of that, let's get started:

MAJOR COMPANIES

MEN (in japan, usually women and men's wrestling is segregated by company, so a men's only promotion would not have women and vice versa. This distinction goes back over 50 years and isn't changing any time soon.)

New Japan Pro Wrestling

The big dog of wrestling. Largest fanbase and most recognizable brand in Japan. Famous for its excellent in ring wrestling and attractive men, New Japan is popular in the west as well because of its english language commentary and easy to use streaming service.

Dragon Gate
The second biggest company in Japan. Its style is called lucharesu, a hybrid blend of Mexican lucha libre and Japanese pro wrestling. This promotion has a large fujo audience because of the undeniable appeal of hunky bois doing flips. Dragon Gate also has a streaming service and English language commentary.

DDT
Weird poo poo. The world's largest comedy wrestling promotion. If you've ever seen a gif of a wrestler wrestling a child or a blow up doll, this is where it's from. Secretly filled to the brim with amazing wrestlers, though. streaming service

Pro Wrestling NOAH
Very traditional strike based pro wrestling. If you want to watch shonen fighting spirit exchanges and speeches about who should be the protagonist of the company, this one is for you! Noah has English language commentary and a streaming service. Actually owned by the same company that owns DDT. Go figure!

WOMEN'S

Stardom
Wrestling based idolish promotion. That's right, this promotion is full of idols! You love those! Apart from singing and dancing, the Stardom girls are also kick rear end wrestlers! Great stuff here, but very serious. Stardom has a streaming service and English language commentary (sometimes)

Tokyo Joshi Pro Wrestling
Very idolish promotion. Basically an IRL version of an Idolm@ster squad with fake fighting. This promotion is more reliant on storylines than Stardom is, but they're not that hard to understand. If you can get the gist of a manga from raws, you can understand TJPW. streaming service

There are of course many more companies running in Japan at the moment, but this is a general overview of the most popular.

Mr. Crow, if my money is limited, which promotion would you recommend the most?

3 promotions:

DDT/TJPW/NOAH because their streaming service is the same and 900 yen so like $8.50 and it's a great value

i think dragongate has been overtaken by ddt for 2nd largest promotion

i thought ddt couldn't draw outside of tokyo, or are they so strong in tokyo that it doesn't matter?

I have memories of watching wrestling from Japan during the Christmas-and-Newyears vacation in the 90s - I think it might've been AJPW that was broadcast here, but it was a local station that also did weird things like Insomniac with Dave Attell a few years later, and I'm not sure they had the rights for any of what they broadcast.

All the same, I remember it very fondly.

if you want that style of wrestling, both current NOAH and new japan are heavily indebted to 90s AJPW
