Not to be flippant but it sounds a bit like you're criticising what they're doing because it doesn't fit with what you imagine the story might be. You're right that what they've done so far doesn't fit with a story of Cole masterminding the whole thing but that means that's not the story they're telling, not that they're bad at telling stories.
