this one has an incredible hook by nate dogg to start off the track with a beat which is catchy enough but not amazing ... what takes this track over the edge is mos def and pharoahe monch both in their prime making some of the best verses of their career. mos def comes with one great line after another, we get back to the hook, and then pharoahe monch comes in with the best rhyme schemes ive ever heard in my life

A lot of people always want their favorite songs to "Go hard in the paint" 24/7 but that kind of thinking is detrimental to music enjoyment entirely. Music, which is supposed to be about our lives (or at least that of the artists in some way, sense or vision) and is almost entirely a manifestation of our experiences needs to be about the slow times, the bad times, etc etc. This is a badass song, and Mos Def is definately one of the all time greats if not the best rapper for me. Props.

Clipse - Grindin'

I had a hard time with this because Clipse is my favorite rap group of all time. I think Pusha T is pretty much impeccable across the board and i could post about 20 songs that he's insanely good on. This doesn't have my favorite lyrics/flow on the album (Young Boy is an unbelievable song especially as the first track on the album. So raw and hosed up.) but Push and Malice are both great on it. The beat, though...it was incredible when it came out and its still hot today. Early Neptunes - they crushed the whole album but this one was special. gently caress now I'm writing this and I want to talk about Cot drat...When the Last Time...Virginia (might be the best lyrics on the album) but I think this one has to be my nomination because of the beat.

I love this album so much. Hell Hath No Fury is absolutely sick as well but I feel like Grindin' was like a nuke that got thrown on the radio. So I dunno. Maybe I'm wrong. Hope other people nominate other stuff by Clipse because gently caress they own.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ArgD6codGc0

Grindin is perfect, but I'll nominate something off HHNF: Clipse - Momma I'm So Sorry

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ItGeJswm-d0

First of all, the beat is insane. Did someone challenge Chad and P to make a beat with just drums and an accordion or harmonica? The kick thumps, the hats are mechanical but off beat, the bass sounds like the same accoordion or harmonica pitched down real low. Once again a stripped down Neptunes beat sets up Pusha + (No)Malice for greatness. Okay so lets get to the rappin'.

This song is coke rap at it's best, with more than enough bravado and just enough misery. It's hard to single out too many lines because every single bar is fire.

Pusha comes hard right out the gate in the first verse:
With basic rhyme pattern, how the gently caress you tryna chatter?
ASIC-rear end rappers, got 'em runnin' for they life
I philosophize about Glocks and keys
Niggas call me Young Black Socrates

Malice keeps up, with a switched up flow:
From Frankfurt to Cologne, Oslo to Sweden
From Italy's Milan to the shores of Napoli
Now I consider Ferrari and Salvador Dalis
I'm no longer local, my thoughts are global
That's why I seem distant, son, expand your vision

They both have shorter verses to close it out, Pusha with the hubris:
Sorry, Heavenly Father, once again, I hate to bother
It's P the evil creeper, send some to the Grim Reaper
Meanwhile, me and my missus like Solomon and Sheba

Sign of the times, her Emilio Pucci sneakers, uh

And Malice with the 'remorse':
I'm sorry, grandmama, for mistakes I have made
When I aired family business, how you put me in my place

Even my baby mama, I can't look you in the face
'Cause I can't do enough, you a symbol of God's grace

Somehow it's a 4 minute song that feels like a 2 minute song, everything is so snappy and perfectly placed. Pusha and Malice morph their flows throughout the whole thing, riding along with an awkward beat. All of HHNF is tight as gently caress, but this one's a standout.

The categories of the judging will be difficult if you only read the English version, because it's loosely translated, but hopefully it can help you appreciate it more when listening. At the very least, it deserves to be on the list.

Reminder about this one since it was missed on the list. Is English only an unspoken rule? From the English translation (obviously it sounds better in French):

quote:

Seeds. Seeds. Future delinquents. What did you expect?
From infancy, we teach them that nothing makes a man a man like money does.
From the lone shooter to the organized group,
The weeds consume the field. It's impossible to stop.
...
"Future"? The future won’t change much at all.
Future generations will be worse than us. Their lives will be more grim than ours.
Our future is the next minute. Our goal is to anticipate.
To prevent, before they put the nail in your coffin.
...
Suicidal. Flabbergasted, the gods are watching mankind
Lead themselves toward the wrong side of the after life,
Taking firm and well-determined steps.
...
Hash by the kilo, poets armed with stylos (t/n: pens),
Reserves of creativity left to rot in silos.
...
While waiting, hope fades away, falls apart, and some turn to rap
The diamonds among us escape, peeling out as they leave.

i nominate Still D.R.E. by Dr. Dre featuring Snoop Dogg from 2001 released in 1999

here is an family friendly edited version from youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_CL6n0FJZpk

-bar quality / creativity
in my opinion, the weakest part of the song. the good doctor likes to remind us of the activities that constitute his life, and he does so once again, but now telling you about how his life has impacted your own life. jay-z wrote the lyrics, billionaire to billionaire, much respect

the pivotal passage:

-flow / delivery
i mean let's be real, there aint nothing like the straightforward delivery and swagger the spills out the good doctor's pie hole everytime he rocks the mic. snoop does his thing on the hook, just dropping a couple of pennies on that 95.

-production / beat
this is where things get interesting. Scott Storch is probably the role model for many of the posters in this subforum. it's simple, it's loving classy, and you know exactly what is 'bout to happen when you hear it. dre will always be a better producer than a rapper, but in many respects he's a director/executive producer of a lil film called 'Life: aka the Game'

-historical significance / game changing qualities / year of release
the return of the king. in my opinion, this album launched a second renaissance of west coast inspired mainstream rap, without this we wouldn't have eminem, 50cent, and all the other street hustlers that carried us until the club-hop scene of the mid to late 2000s. with only 3 solo studio albums to his name, and the worst one of them better than most of the other albums to come out that same year ( compton 2015 ). the good doctor provided the soundtrack of my childhood, of my teenage years, of my wistful late 20s, and i hope he releases one more teaching me how to enjoy my time at the top while we wait for the game to stop

adding some additional weight to my recommendation, of which I've only submitted one so it's okay

so far this NFL WILDCARD WEEKEND my song STILL DRE by dr dre ft snoop dogg has been used to promote dr dres appearance at the superbowl halftime show where he will feature snoop dogg, eminem, kendrick lamar, and mary j blige so the advertising brain trust has gathered and thought 'yes this is the song that represents 'these' people'

yung swamp thang
I've been hesitant to put up a track in this because my tastes are pretty scattershot and not congruent with "the canon", so aren't really suited to a bracket tournament, but seeing how personal some of the choices in this thread are (as opposed to like, trying to run the data on whatever song sold biggest or crossed over hardest or still plays in clubs etc.) made me wanna put this one in.

The Coup - Fat Cats, Bigga Fish
From their 1994 album Genocide & Juice, which is more or less objectively the best name for a hip hop album ever.

Boots Riley is a genius - his activism since he was like, 14, his movie Sorry to Bother You, which is loving amazing and an insane film to have gotten funded at all, his eloquence about his politics, etc. all firmly establish him as more than a lyricist, but his lyrics are world class. The Coup's early stuff is great, and G&J is my favorite album of theirs, but for decades he's just consistently made really good music with radical politics that don't feel like a lecture, and that's all been really intentional from the beginning. Thinking about it I can't come up with any other music of any genre that so successfully feels entertaining and like a party but also absolutely drops some big political ideas. The man's life work has been putting radicalizing messages into fun and accessible formats, the opposite of the usual gatekeeping "read marx" poo poo on the left (caveat: first line of their first single was "Presto, read the Communist Manifesto").

Fat Cats, Bigga Fish is a classic of storytelling rap, and goes places that storytelling rap basically doesn't tend to go - bragging on his stolen bus pass and how he hustles a burger stand employee for a free meal. Funny, down in the dirt poo poo, rather than the kinda more typical drug/crime movie tragedy stuff most people think of when you say storytelling rap. It's really evocative street level mood setting without feeling like he's shouting "look at what's happening in the ghettos!!" at a white audience or something.

But he brings it out of his little street hustler world into the bigger picture in a few lines in the final verse so beautifully, having built up to it and written his narrator character so well. It's not a new message but it lands so perfectly and in '94 showed that if you got sick of Chuck D shouting imperatives at you in the five years previous, there was a way more enjoyable way to impart some of that same radical analysis of the world in fun songs.

The beat is cinematic blaxploitation style and fits perfectly.

Here's the full six minute epic, which i recommend for a first listen or re-listen. the best way is to listen to it on the album so it runs seamlessly into "pimps (freestylin' at the fortune 500 club)" which is an absolute banger but also sort of makes for a sequel scene to this song's story, followed by "Takin' These", concept album style.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f18N1VwPPv8

the music video, which cut out half a verse, which for a storytelling song is kind of egregious, but it's a cool video otherwise

I'd have never thought to nominate this track but i love that someone else did. Daniel Dumile's first appearance on a record, but even aside from that it's like a perfect encapsulation of what was good about golden age hip hop - the golden age that old timers mean, 88-93. Production, content, sampling, vibe.

The two 3rd Bass albums were my first proper intro to rap as a little kid who'd only heard hammer and vanilla ice or whatever on the radio. Given that they're... well not a white group (Daddy Rich is an incredible scratch DJ for the era, really technically advanced), but white rappers, this should be more embarrassing a fact than it is. Testament to how un-lame 3rd Bass was. I put them above the beasties as white rappers because the beasties kinda did their own thing as a white rap group but 3rd Bass actually fit in with the culture despite being white rappers. Much harder I think.

Here's the full six minute epic, which i recommend for a first listen or re-listen. the best way is to listen to it on the album so it runs seamlessly into "pimps (freestylin' at the fortune 500 club)" which is an absolute banger but also sort of makes for a sequel scene to this song's story, followed by "Takin' These", concept album style.

the music video, which cut out half a verse, which for a storytelling song is kind of egregious, but it's a cool video otherwise

No lie was gonna nominate this. One of my all time favorite tracks and a definite step on my path to radicalization, Mr Coke said to Mr Mayor, you know we got a process like Ice T’s hair.

PS Gasface was not the first time DOOM was on record. The video samples a video (during Pete Nice’s verse) of Zev Love X doing the first “gasface”.
