Horizon Zero Dawn Thread: PS4 | PC I Complete Plot Recap | The Apollo Archive

:siren:This thread will contain spoilers for Horizon Zero Dawn. If you haven't yet completed the first game and don't want many key elements of the plot spoiled for you, please spend time in either the PS4 or PC threads above. We'll wait for you to finish, we promise :) .:siren:

Horizon Forbidden West is the second mainline title in the Horizon series of open world post-apocalyptic action-adventure games and the direct sequel to Horizon Zero Dawn. It is developed by Dutch studio Guerrilla Games, formerly known for their first-person shooter Killzone, and published by Sony. Forbidden West will see the return of sassy girlboss machine hunter Aloy in her quest to stop the Red Blight, a mysterious plague causing ecological collapse across the ruins of what were once the western states of Utah, Nevada, and California. Along the way, she will encounter some familiar faces and forge new tribal alliances to uncover the buried secrets of the Old Ones and end the environmental threat.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WpgXz5Z9v-U

Among its various contemporaries, Horizon stands out for combining lush visuals with inventive machine combat and an involving science fiction storyline far more intelligently written than a game with robot dinosaurs as its main premise might at first suggest. Zero Dawn was a huge critical and commercial success in 2017, immediately establishing Horizon as a flagship series for the Playstation and Aloy as one of its central mascots. Forbidden West promises a refinement of the core mechanics introduced in HZD, including expanded traversal options, more strategic combat against both human and machine enemies, diverse skill trees, improved character sidequests, and an overhauled crafting system. Settlements will now include workbenches where Aloy can upgrade her weapons and outfits, eat food for temporary buffs, and play the new Strike mini-game. PS5-specific enhancements include improved lighting, reflections, and a 60fps performance mode.

Horizon Forbidden West will be released for the Playstation 4 & Playstation 5 on Friday, February 18th 2022. The PS4 version is exactly the same and is $10 cheaper. I repeat: The PS4 version is exactly the same and is $10 cheaper. An eventual PC port is expected, but no official release date has yet been announced.

There are FIVE(5) whole different editions of Horizon Forbidden West that you can buy, each increasing by hype level. Isn't capitalism awesome?

Standard Edition - Horizon Forbidden West, available for disc or digital download on PS4 or PS5.
Special Edition - Horizon Forbidden West, available for disc or digital download on PS4 or PS5, Mini-Art book, Digital Soundtrack, Nora Legacy Outfit and Spear.

The DLC shed some light on the rogue AI HAPHAESTUS, the subfunction responsible for building the machines, as well as another AI responsible for maintaining Yellowstone Caldera that survived the Faro plague, CYAN. The Frozen Wilds rules and you should definitely play it!

It runs at 4k60fps with better water effects on PS5, but as far as I can tell, those are the only enhancements. Does not have the higher-res textures, foliage deformations or volumetric lighting from the PC port. Still looks pretty great though!

My bold prediction: Faro will be dead, no clones, no cryo, no take-backsies. As entertaining as it would be to have him survive 1,000 years only for Elisabet's clone to stab him in the dick, I think he got away with it.

Faro definitely allowed himself to be influenced by the Antimod neo-luddites, but he only actively sought out their approval and reassurance after kickstarting the plague that would doom civilization. It became a reactionary and very convenient justification for his individual actions that led to the downfall of humanity -- "It wasn't my fault, anybody in my position would have done it, the technology's to blame." Whether Faro truly believed his own lies or not is tangential, he was always in process of rationalization for his actions.

I think we're going to run into a ted faro clone. Aloy will be tempted to stomp his head in but probably won't because she's a good person. The faro clone will be required to open doors in faro's bunker

At about 1:30 into the story trailer you can see Aloy and a new companion Alva at a door that looks like the entrance to Thebes. The fact that they conspicuously have not yet mentioned the name of her tribe, that they seem to be familiar with Ted's bunker, and are already equipped with their own Focuses make me think they're connected to Faro somehow.

The difference is that Guerrilla had the time (and budget) to do full performance capture in Forbidden West, rather than whatever animation cycle-based software they were using in Zero Dawn outside of a few select scenes. It began with the Frozen Wilds DLC and really shows here, not just for shot composition but in getting more natural performances from your actors. Outside of one scene in HZD Ashly Burch and Lance Reddick never performed their lines in the same room, which is pretty crazy to think about. The shift to full performance capture that a lot of AAA projects are undergoing right now is gradually making video games much less like voice acting and a lot more like theatre, where you can really see all the little nuances in a character's body language. The main drawback to this method is that the process is still hella time-consuming and expensive, but that's probably not a problem for Sony.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PWacKol8Rdo

It seems like the predictions that Aloy's shieldweaver armor would break down at some point were indeed correct, although it doesn't seem to quite line up with her acquiring the Shield Glider. My guess now is that you'll start the tutorial mission with the shield intact and it'll become inoperational by the end, giving new & returning players a good excuse to ease back into the combat. Hopefully there will be some way to restore it by the end of the campaign.

A compilation of some random Forbidden West details by IGN. Something that I haven't seen discussed yet is that overfill on limited-capacity items like berries and potions will now be sent directly to a stash located near the workbench in town. Vantage points will return as environmental puzzles. There are also some more details about the Machine Strike game in part 31.

Here are some previews of what Forbidden West will look like on a PS4(Pro). The resolution is a bit fuzzier and it's obviously locked to 30fps, but the texture quality and draw distance still look to be an improvement over Zero Dawn. That new Utaru settlement looks amazing! I always thought it was a cool bit of worldbuilding how all the tribes call it the Forbidden West, but not because it's like, actually forbidden to go there or anything. It's just a name given by the dominant regional power after a failed colonial expedition that was eventually sort of adopted by everyone. It's kinda how like Wales literally meant "land of outsiders" to the Anglo-Saxons but it stuck around for centuries and now even native Welsh people call themselves a word that means "foreign." When you're the most organized and militant society in an area like the Carja, it's probably easy to imagine that you're at the center of everything.
