Fight of the Year: Charles Johnson vs Carlos Mota, LFA 122

Not gonna link the tweet 'cause it spoils it in case people wanna go to fight pass and watch it, but just a brutal energizer bunny kind of fight where they combined for ~650 strikes in twenty minutes. Ridiculous pace.

Dumbest career move: Ciryl Gane, up on two out of three judging scorecards in the final round of a heavyweight championship fight and finally in top position after getting wrestled to death for half the fight, rolls for a heel hook and loses everything

What do you mean he was up on two scorecards?

Ngannou won a unanimous decision by scores of 49-46, 48-47 and 48-47, which means 2/3 judges had the fight tied going into the final round, and up to that point in said round Gane had landed multiple combinations and taken Ngannou down in comparison to Ngannou's nothing, so it can be safely assumed that he was ahead in round five and had he either maintained top control, returned to the feet or basically done anything except let Ngannou get back on top of him, would have won a split decision.

Competence in Refereeing of the Year award for Herb Dean stopping TKZ/Volkanovski after it was clear Jung was done instead of letting him get battered to hell and back for another two rounds.

I guess you'd file it under Worst Hype of the Year but I'd also accept Grossest poo poo: Eagle FC 47, the entire company decides to hype the return of Thiago Silva by talking nonspecifically about how strong his 'personal struggles' have made him and having Kamaru Usman talk about what a family man he is

edit: twenty minutes later they used a promo package for the main event as an opportunity to talk about #freecain, so make it a twofer

Breakout fighter of the Year: Alex Pereira goes from a 4-1 fighter with 1 fight in the majors to a 7-1 UFC champion in a calendar year.

I hate this, because it was so intentional and artificial, but it's also going to be real hard to beat.

Sure, but it's a spectrum, not a binary.
