i remember downloading porn jpegs at my friends grandmothers house at 14.4k speed and then a couple friends of mine would come to my place after school and we’d look thru my small collection. would literally take 30 seconds to decode a jpg on my 12mhz amiga so it was a very slow slideshow but kinda made it far more novel

the main friend of mine I did this with died at 19 of leukaemia. rip richard you were a good dude and the only mate I ever had that was as horny as me. you’re missed 😣

when i was like 11 i didnt know you needed to connect a computer to a phone line to get onto the internet and spent a night trying to get an aol free whatever hours cd to work.

our national telecom use to have a freecall phone number to get their scummy dialer on CD. if you called it (from your school's payphone, usually) and claimed to not have a CD-ROM drive they would ship you the program on five floppy disks instead. Thanks for the free diskettes, bicth!

not the earliest memories, but a few gooders:

loving around with ResEdit and making copies of applications with silly dialog boxes and menu text on my family's LC II

making "undeletable" folders with rude words on the desktop of school library computers. if you used command prompt and made a folder using an alternative unicode space character in the folder name, instead of using the space bar, the folder would only be deletable if you went into command prompt again. if you tried dragging it to the recycle bin, you'd get an error that the folder could not be found.

the windows xp days when you'd instantly get infected with the blaster virus if you didn't use a router and just plugged directly into your modem.

loving around with sub7 and going on irc to ask how to use it, getting my family pc infected because i was an easy mark lmao

when i was 15, i got reprimanded for abusing school computing resources (using the school's t1 line to download a linux iso and making the school sysadmin mad that his pos file scanner choked on an 800 mb iso file i left on my student fileshare)

if only there were a guiding hand to keep me from straying onto the wayward path of linuxes later in life too

My very first computer memory was playing some kind of gold mining game on an Apple II. Foreshadowing of the portion of my life spent on minecraft.

In my middle school (which was a weird open plan dealie originally, then they put up partitions, AMA) the computer lab had a bunch of Macintosh SEs and Pluses and stuff, as many Apple ][s, and a single Apple ][GS. I always jumped on the GS and played California Games for the whole period

games taking almost an hour to load from cassette tapes on a TO7/70

i remember that one extremely obscure french game (Crystann) where you had to pick up items that gave you extra abilities allowing you to unlock access to new parts of the map (i recently remembered that game and realized it was pretty much a metroidvania, in 1985, before the first Metroid even existed).

If you dropped down at some place without first picking the item allowing you to dig through walls you'd get stuck and had to reload the game (40 minutes)

the school computers had some "security" thing that checked filenames so you had to rename that jumping sktickman game to "notepad.exe" in order to play it

When GTA3 came out on PC everyone was so desperate to play it we managed to get it "running" on the TNT2.

And someday, together.. We'll shine.
we had a really old ms-dos windows 3.1 machine in our basement, kind of surrounded by cobwebs and poo poo. i loved it a lot, but i was 3 so barely remembered the commands to type and poo poo. i would always be afraid of spiders and mice when i went down the stairs, but never at the desk (but i always kept my feet up on the chair). i would use aol on it to play card games too.

same but GTA3 and the mafia car. spawn one into your garage, give it max top speed, max weight, and max durability, and just blast through all in your way
