[Dooting Stealthily]

thought this could be a fun little CSPAM discussion

There's an (attempted) artist revolution against Spotify at the moment, for several different reasons.

The first, obviously, was Joe Rogan. Neil Young, Joni Mitchell, and others, removed their music from the platform in response to Rogan's covid misinformation. For an added lol, some news orgs tried to spin this as Spotify removing the music, rather than the artists doing so.

https://www.nbcnews.com/pop-culture/pop-culture-news/spotify-agrees-remove-neil-youngs-music-joe-rogan-dispute-rcna13698

But also, other artists (like the eve6 guy and Cake) are trying to build a wider musician's movement to get away from spotify due to the exploitation of artists, low pay, etc. He gives a particularly insane anecdote about his own band's financials.

https://twitter.com/Eve6/status/1488158473028202496

https://www.garbageday.email/p/ah-the-cognitive-dissonance-it-hurts

It turns out, in fact, that Spotify was bribing large labels with equity share in exchange for them not suing. There's a lot of nonsense in the music industry!

https://twitter.com/CAKEMUSIC/status/1488278251617144835

Spotify's pay is atrocious!

(I personally use Tidal bc of the good audio quality and interesting curated content, but they have their own drama around MQA)

An unrelated funny thing:
There's a hot new NFT grift called Hitpiece, which is allegedly getting millions in VC funding to create NFTs of songs and album art, etc. The one issue, besides all the other issues?

They don't own any of the rights, or even have artist permission to do any of this.

https://twitter.com/pattonoswalt/status/1488669200344252417

https://twitter.com/LeftAtLondon/status/1488625125821804544

I could post a million of these but you get the point.

The company is literally being created to try to force legislation around the issue.

This is obviously working very well and they're getting sued to oblivion lol

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LMk0SEi93nY

Some publications are even obviously taking money to talk about it:
https://twitter.com/RollingStone/status/1488971625513078794

So here's a thread to talk about how dumb and exploitative the music industry is, or just art in general I guess. There's some good drama going so it seemed like a good time to chat about it.

I have a relative who works for Spotify and they did like … something, with almost no real experience in the industry, to get Billie Eilish famous / on board with Spotify.

and now gets a shitload of money to… I do not know what. point being, can’t possibly pay musicians the money they deserve, you gotta pay dozens of weird corporate types!!

I love um!
Intellectual property is fake. Real musicians get paid from playing live. These people got hosed by their own record companies 50 years ago. Them bitching about their lost revenue from album sales was feeble back in the days of taping poo poo off the radio, so a hearty lol at them still trying this poo poo 20 years after napster. Spotify doesn't have to give a single gently caress about or Neil Young, Joni Mitchel, or any other washed up boomer/gen x act.

And if you can't then at least buy from Bandcamp, specifically on Bandcamp Fridays, 1st Friday of the month where Bandcamp waive their cut.

Spotify sucks rear end and doesn't even let me just play an entire album all the way through on my phone. gently caress that.

I buy on Bandcamp, OP.

from my own meager musical activities, I can report that a single Bandcamp album sale is worth approximately infinite Spotify steams.

so kicking him off spotify is just getting rid of the paywall and making him more accessible lol

the hitpiece thing is so stupid and unbelievable on its face that ive been trying to think of what the real scam might be. it might be something like the listed nfts are just placeholders so artists have to pay to mint them

real music fans pay for raw ogg vorbis cassette tapes that they then rip manually using an analog-to-digital cassette converter that they then spend months curating on a custom foobar2000 gui library.
