Since it hasn't been addressed in this thread yet, you are not required to die to spend EXP. Upon activating a shrine, you can freely toggle between the Skill Tree screen and the Shrine Upgrade screen, even after selecting an upgrade, so long as you do not exit the Shrine Upgrade screen. Additionally, after beating each boss you return to the Wuguan (training hall). The Skill Tree itself is directly opposite the desk/window where you engage the next hideout. Useful if you beat the boss with no coins/revives left as they award considerable EXP.

It's worth noting that if you start a run from any level other than the first, you still retain any shrine bonuses you picked up from previous levels. These get overwritten when you finish a given level with a lower age than your previous best. This can help you optimize the order in which you select upgrades based on what age / score / xp you expect to have in later levels. Once you've permanently unlocked every move from the skill tree it makes more sense to spend xp on focus bars during the first or second level. Focus moves in general are kind of a crutch, but if you're going for the plat you need to use all of them at least once. Edit: as for collectibles, a few of them can't be obtained until you explore later levels. Detective board progress is saved instantly so you don't have to finish the level once you find it.
