Just try it until you get sick of it, then look up how to do the levitation glitch to skip it.

I, Giorno Giovanna, have a dream!

You can use some of your psychic powers to great advantage in The Meat Circus, in ways the game doesn't really spend the time to teach you properly, which make the level much easier. Specifically:

During the Lil Oly escort mission, use Confusion grenades on Mr Bun, and he'll freeze instead of constantly running away from you.

You can use Shield to knock back the knife thrower's knives, as well as Augustus' juggling clubs.

I believe Invisibility will also cause Augustus to lose track of you and stop attacking.

Then again, I'm not sure I ever played the original pre-nerf version of the level, so maybe it really was that bad.

Yeah, the nerfed version didn't seem impossible, even though it was a huge difficulty spike. Or maybe that's what you get for being raised on platformers.

My disdain for you all knows no bounds.
I think some of those methods worked on the pre-nerf version, but that version also had like nearly no room for mistakes because Olly had like barely any health, a few hits and he died, where he's much more tanky nowadays. Also the water level rose much faster in said version where it's now considerably slower. One screw up, and you were done, where in the nerfed version you have basically a couple of tries before you're forced to restart that segment.

Also failing said segments counted as losing a life in the pre-nerf version, where that's no longer the case in the nerfed version. A good portion of the inherent difficulty is still there since the actual level design didn't change, it's just more forgiving now. Still not a great part of the game, but less aggravating at least.

I think it's more a question of time than location. As far as I know, the word is widely understood to be a slur, and I believe they backed away from using it in this game. At least, I don't remember it being used, but I admit that I wasn't paying attention for that specifically. The Aquatos are a traveling circus troupe, and that implies everything about their culture that needs to be implied. We also get a lot more information about Raz's background in this game - there was a very tiny bit of it hinted at in the instruction manual for the first game, but that wasn't referenced directly in the game itself.

I dont think there is fall damage in the game? do you really need to levitate before you hit the ground?

Also can you dive instead of levitate to get down faster from big heights if you time it just before the ground.

I didn't find any different reactions that I can remember, but don't worry—we'll be back and able to show off for dear old dad!

And speaking of being back, this part of the game has some weirdness in its pacing that already started, and that I'm trying to work around in the LP. The moment we have access to the quarry, it's almost possible to do everything there. The few powers we have left to unlock will let us get the last few things, but the most important new traversal power, Mental Connection, was obtained early in the game.

You may choose to go back and forth between the story missions and the side content, or you may feel like the plot is pushing you forward on a non-stop rollercoaster and you're not sure when to take a break. The game doesn't punish you for waiting around, but you have to manage the time by yourself. During this time there isn't too much progress on the NPC side either... for better or for worse, Sam is gonna spend a whole lotta time making pancakes. Frazie isn't gonna move much. Dad'll be dad. The game doesn't know exactly what you're going to do in what order, so conversations won't meaningfully advance for a while. This means that if you didn't go around exploring the Motherlobe in the beginning of the game, you probably missed a large chunk of evolving NPC dialogue and character development. Much of that stuff was front-loaded.

On one hand, front-loading the dialogue makes the beginning of the game very dynamic w.r.t. dialogue; the game is definitely putting its best foot forward, maybe hoping that the plot will start making up for it in later stages, or maybe they think you'll be tired of the dialogue and want to move on. But... you don't get the same charm of evolving dialogue as in the first game.

I reloaded Psychonauts 1 and holy hell did the controls not age well. It was BAD.

But I swear upon my honor before the next video I will do my best to show off the Meat Circus again. If you give it a try and manage, I will get you a new avatar or a forums upgrade (your choice).

I fought the lava, and the lava won.
I think Tim Schafer recently posted a few things about Meat Circus to help people who are just now playing the first game get through it, and some of them were new to me. I knew about using Invisibility at the tightropes to avoid the flaming clubs and Shield for the knife throwers, but I'd never tried Confusion on the mutant bunnies. As for the circular nets, I found it much easier to jump from the inside to the outside and vice versa, for some reason. That might be useful.

Well, I promised a meat circus.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Kh842b5v5E

Christ these controls were a pain. I completely forgot how to use levitate, figured out I can't trigger powers when not on solid ground, and I dislike telekinesis. Psychonauts 2 massively improved the controls and I'm not too keen on going back. And the circular nets... were just as bad as they were when I first tried them.

But maybe my pain is your fun? Enjoy.

For those wondering why Oleander is afraid of his father, there is a semi-canon backstory for the first game though I'm going use spoiler tags since it gets pretty hosed up:

Oleander was reportedly the youngest of three brothers though he saw himself as being just as big and strong as his older brothers. One day, his father saw him playing with a bunny. Though Oleander wasn't in trouble, his father advised him not to get attached to the rabbit as it was the runt of of the litter meaning it couldn't be sold for meat or fur and was thus considered useless: Incapable of doing anything but sucking up feed and is therefore to be slaughtered and fed to the pigs.

Out of fear of being seen as the runt like Mr. Bunny, Oleander worked harder than his brothers doing three times the chores and doubling his study time. At school he demonstrated a level of discipline unheard of for his age, scheduling his time with a chart system, asked teachers for extra credit work, did every extracurricular activity available, started clubs, organized guest speakers, ran for class president & treasurer, and graduated top of his class meaning he could have gone to the college of his choice had he not attempted to join the military.

The reason he tried to join the military was due to his father, Butch, being a former Marine and so by joining, Oleander could prove that he wasn't worthless in his father's eyes. Unfortunately as we saw in the game itself he was rejected by every branch, due to his height, who told him the same thing: "Not big enough. Can't drive a tank. Can't jump over a foxhole. Can't do nothing but suck down rations." After this, he was recruted by the Psychonauts however they did not deploy him due to the aggressive tendencies he developed as a maladaptive coping mechanism.

This came to a head when, as Coach of Whispering Rock Psychic Summer Camp, he received news that his father had passed away which coupled with his prolonged exposure to Psitanium caused something to snap.
