Well, I managed to read one fan. It said, "Reality is", "Perception is", "Time is", and "Illusion is"

You know, that's one of those things I glossed over. I'm done recording footage but I'll go back in the level and grab some shots of the fans.

There are five fans in the game that I know have writing on them for sure. The first four are in the Eye Shrine, the last is the Cake Summit.

REALITY IS; ILLUSION IS; TIME IS; PERCEPTION IS

YOU; SERVE; TIME; SERVES

FAST; SLOW; NEVER; STOPS

CAN I; STOP; YOU; TIME
I read it as "Can I stop you" or "Can I stop time."
Mraagvpeine got "Time can I stop you" which honestly makes more sense.

And then the cake

Never; Forever; Apart; Ever
Probably intended as "Never Apart" and "Forever & Ever".

Oh boy, this is going to hurt.

Before that though it's nice to see Bob, the character who should be pissed off with Lucy the most (recall that the Bad Mood you encountered at the wedding had its heart cage of Ford and Lucy's table, implying lingering resentment), be the first the hug her showing just what Raz had done for him.

We've also got our first implanted mental construct since Loboto's Labyrinth and third overall including Lungfishopolis though chronologically this is the earliest of the three.

Keep in mind that Linda and Loboto both fought against the constructs implanted their minds. Ford may have had the Astralathe to reinforce the flea circus construct but we've seen how easy it is to dismantle implanted constructs.

Conversely however, Black Velvetopia and Milla's Dance Party showed that a mind can also maintain a constructed world as a means to either suppress or move on from trauma.

The first time I created the bounce pads, I wasn't sure what was going on. I wasn't looking out for the balls of yarn, which look so obvious now.

I also want to repeat my appreciation for the enemy choices and the storytelling they bring to the table. You can always look at them and figure out their context, or wonder at why some of them don't fit in—they all do to some degree.

In Norma's defense, she hasn't realized exactly how badly she's screwed up.

That aside as I implied in my last post, Lucy was fully aware that the Flea Circus was a construct implanted in her mind but instead of resisting/dismantling the construct as Linda and Loboto had; she chose to maintain it since like Edgar and Camilla, she found the constructed reality comfortable and wanted to protect that comfort/joy from Maligula.

And speaking of Maligula: Her name may be derived from the Latin "mal" meaning to "evil" or "bad", the infamous Roman emperor Caligula, and amygdala: the primary structure of the brain responsible for fight or flight response.

Id say since the world is a sort of highly propagandized version of the events in grulovia (thpugh alling the attendants propagandeers is much too on the nose) alongside the doubts and the huge waves of censors, Gristol knows that hes been given a false image of grulovia and maligula, but this is all he has and was told he rightfully deserves, so he keeps bepieving in it.

Though I do think that memory vaults tend to be reliable spurces, and are relayed to the player the past as it was from the person's POV, not through their psyche's filter.

All what Raz has been doing was at the behest of 'Truman', too. He's just been seeking help from the Psychic Psix Six on his own initiative. I'm sure 'Truman' would have been happy if Miligula was isolated and exposed without Raz going the long way around and helping the Agents with their various issues along the way.

The biggest difference between Norma and Raz is that he isn't as cynical, despite him being quite astute for a ten year old.

Chimera-gui
Mar 20, 2014
I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if 'Truman' was purposely setting Raz up knowing that others were already suspicious of him, Norma just had the misfortune of being the pawn in this scheme because she had been the most suspicious of him.

Basic Braining showed us that it was possible to completely fabricate a memory so it would be wise to not take every detail as 100% correct even if the general story given is, it’s possible that the false image wasn’t for Gristol himself…

Never attribute to malice that post which is adequately explained by a poor sense of humor.
Gristol truly is delugional if he thinks he can just turn back the clock by reviving Maligula. The Maliks are finished.

As for the newspaper clipping's text, it looks like it might be from a WW2-era article on the Pacific front given the talk of Japanese warships and the Philippines. Though I'd be hard-pressed to find the original one, if it is based on a real text. I assume it'd be in an archive somewhere, since Double Fine had to have found it themselves.

That's pretty cool. Maybe they got it from the Library of Congress?

I remember there was something I specifically avoided showing off in the LP because I noticed it for the first time during a test take, and realized just how much it spoils part of the mystery. Which the game's writing has a tendency to do in the first place, so... you either get points for paying attention, or otherwise you just get to stick along for the ride? So right before I show it off, how much foreshadowing is there that Nick Johnsmith is Malik? Discussion about the plot's bounciness aside, there are a few points where the game hints at the connection.
  • Loboto's Labyrinth shows off the villian cloaked in shadow, with a modulated voice. You don't have much to go on by then, so you'd be forgiven for forgetting the shape of that shadow.
  • Using Clairvoyance on Truman shows you as a peasant, but you don't have the context to understand that yet.
  • Nick Johnsmith's body does start talking with the PSI King's brain inside him, but the speech patterns are different.
  • In Ford's Follicles, you see Malik referenced on a bottle, but his face is partly hidden.
  • In Cruller's Correspondence, you briefly get to see a familiar looking face on a stamp
And then things are a bit dry until the very end for the reveal. Ford's levels are really where you can get that glimpse of Gristol Malik and his connection to the overall plot, and there's one spot in particular:

If you use the camera on that stamp you get a very good look at a face that looks remarkably like Nick Johnsmith. If you miss that that spot, though, the reveal will definitely be more of a surprise.

After seeing Gristol's backstory, there is no way I can believe him to be the mastermind behind the events of this game, and possibly the events of the first game (Loboto is the main link here). How can a person who grew up only knowing luxury and excess, and spent a good portion of his life in a casino, be able to do even half of the things he did? I can buy him tracking down Ford, but infiltrating Psychonauts HQ that has psychic mind-readers? Un-uh, no way. I'm sure if there's a third game, we will find out there's a mastermind behind Gristol's masterminding.

As for the level itself, it's certainly an inspired choice to show everything like a theme park. It's very obvious Gristol wants to show-off and tell everyone everything about himself and the things he's done. And when he starts singing along with that song, it was kinda creepy. Also, it seems that he has some measure of control inside his mind; maybe Maligula taught him a thing or two about how to defend himself mentally.

To be fair it's been well established by now that there is a strict policy regarding trust and consent specifically because the Psychonauts are an organization of mind-readers. It's why Sasha, Hollis and even Milla got so upset with Raz following the Lady Luctopus incident and why no one realized Oleander was on a hair trigger in the first until it was too late (that said, I don't think Bristol had any involvement in the Coach's antics; he simply recruited Loboto for the brain transplant independently of Oleander).

Hell given what we know about the Psychic Seven, it's possible that they were the ones to establish this policy; blaming their own lack of restraint in using the Astralathe for everything that had gone wrong regarding Grulovia and not wanting to ever repeat that again.
