CMDR Yooper Here, I'll be the Northern Command Aluf for this campaign. I'll work with the flight leads for mission tasking, direct ground units, and hopefully keep us out of the weeds.

A few tasks for everyone in this lead up period.

1. Flight Leads : Can you please inform us (:justpost:) of the capabilities of your aircraft circa 1990. Effective engagement ranges, ordnance, and an overall feel for how you will work. SlingShot (Elendil) and MatzoMaker (me) don't want to assume you can do something you can't.
2. Pilots : Practice with your aircraft. I know this sounds silly, but without precision munitions this will be an entirely different world. If you're A2A, get good with SARH or IR missiles. Winging missiles half a continent away is no longer a thing. A2G, pickle iron bombs and cluster munitions till you're comfortable with literally dropping the bomb into a pickle barrel. Then do it while evading AAA.
3. SEAD : Learn that Shrike! If we can't knock out Syrian air defenses then everything above will be for naught.

Going into this I'm assuming we'll be, at least, half as effective on our missions. Doing the core tasks well will define our success on these missions. Our AO is tight, you'll be wheels up and on target in under 5 minutes for the initial sorties. Let that sink in. In 3 minutes you may be inside of SAM range.

I'm hoping to add some new flight planning tools to keep this all buttery smooth.

Seren Madman Theory of Colt 2 here. Already, my flight and I have begun training with our Skyhawks and the pilots under my command are some of the finest veterans in the IAF. We're currently drilling for low level and dive attacks with unguided rockets, cluster bombs, and both high and low drag iron bombs as well as employment of the Shrike ARM against the expected air defense systems of the enemy. Our aircraft are fitted for drogue refueling and drop tanks, and we have terrain avoidance radar to allow for low altitude flight in poor visibility. Additionally, we are equipped with parachute flare dispensers and rockets for night illumination, allowing for all weather attack.

However, our electronic countermeasures are dated, we have no guided weaponry beyond the Shrike, our cockpits are not NVG compatible, and our navigation systems only provide for 2 waypoints so complex flight plans will be very difficult to follow precisely without reference to landmarks (or in IFR). Additionally, our self-defense capability against enemy air consists of at most 2-4 AIM-9P5 Sidewinder missiles, our twin 20mm cannons, and our wits. Taking more than 2 missiles seriously cuts into our capacity for A/G ordinance and ideally, our escorts and air cover are effective enough to allow for those 2 pylons to be used for additional ordinance.

As it stands, we're capable of air defense suppression against emplaced sites and we are currently drilling for close air support; over the coming days we'll also aim to practice striking defended targets and area targets such as airbases.

Issues

How many SAM sites can we reasonably engage? I'd rather have a minimum and use extra shrikes on the way back to punch holes.
How far can the element of surprise take us? If we strike those two airbases the only thing that can pursue us will have to come out of Damascus.
SA-2's have a lovely target floor, but SA-3's will prove an issue.
How much ordnance can we carry that far into Syria?

-Each A-4 can carry at most 4 Shrikes, plus a centerline MER/TER of ordinance and, should it come to it, 2 20mm cannons. The Shrike can be considered to have an effective range of ~8nm and just about anything we can carry on the centerline can mop up a suppressed site. Carrying 4 Shrikes will deny us the ability to carry Sidewinders for self-defense.
-Assuming interceptors on alert and scrambled as soon as we are detected, I would guesstimate between 5 to 15 minutes between detection and interception, depending on how far we are from the host airfield. If the enemy already have aircraft patrolling we might only have a few minutes between detection and being engaged.
-The SA-3 has a minimum engagement altitude of ~700ft. However, the SA-6 has a minimum floor of 100ft, though in practice its ability to reliably track and engage is degraded below ~400. I lack hard altitudes for the minimums of the SA-2 and SA-5 but it would not be unreasonable to assume they are at worst similar to the SA-3. The primary threats to our low level ingress and attack would be the SA-8, -9 and ZSU-23-4 Shilka AAA; all are short ranged, but have no meaningful other limit outside of line of sight.
-On combat radius versus payload:

As this table shows, with the heaviest bombload our radius would only be sufficient for Hummus SMASH and Snappy SNAPSHOT and would require high altitude ingress and egress, which would expose us to much more of the air defense network. Taking two drop tanks guarantees we have sufficient fuel for any profile and flight plan combination as well as loiter time if desired, but means we can only take 2 Shrikes. We can elect to take a single centerline tank, which should give enough range to allow for a free choice of flight plans. If we need to fly far and low then we can take two wing tanks and hopefully offset the loss of Shrikes by sneaking around SAMs rather than busting through them.

COLT 1/2 FLIGHT PLAN

ETOD: 06:20:00
Expected Weather: CAVOK, winds 270/10
Colt 1 A/A TACAN: 01X
Colt 2 A/A TACAN: 02X

Colt 1 Intraflight: 133.00
Colt 2 Intraflight: 134.00

Ramat David Tower: 260.00
ABM (Sling Shot): 261.00
Package Comms (Matzo Maker): 262.00

Planned loadout to be 4 AGM-45 Shrike ARMs, and 1 TER loaded with 3 pods of either FFARs or Zuni rockets, as pilot preference dictates.

Our flight plan is expected to be as per above. We will depart Ramat David and fly to WP 1 at angels 18 or maximum doppler radar altitude, whichever is lower. At WP 1 we will turn north towards the EWR and dive to 200 feet AGL before conducting strafing passes to destroy it. Once destroyed we will push to WP 3 and then 4, setting up a SEAD patrol at those waypoints. Our priority targets will be the batteries at points 2, 3 and 4; should these be suppressed and our flights left with spare ARMs, we will engage any targets of opportunity nearby. At each point Colt 1 and Colt 2 will work as one flight to degrade enemy air defenses at that point; the one exception will be at Marj Ruhayyil Air Base, where I will split Colt 1 and 2 to each go after one site with the flight that has more ordinance remaining tasked with the SA-6.

Attack plan shall be in elements; one aircraft (the weasel) is to draw a lock from the site, while his wingman (the shooter) will aim to get a missile off. If more than one run is needed, the weasel and shooter shall swap roles. The weasel is encouraged to be conservative and bug out if the radar is not suppressed or the threat posed by the shot is deemed excessively high. Should the radar be destroyed or shut down, the weasel may elect to close in to draw AAA fire from a safe distance while the shooter conducts rocket passes to further degrade the site. This is optional if the threat posed is deemed excessive, but encouraged.

Prioritize survival; we lack the awareness and ECM tools modern American aircraft possess. In particular if you still have ARMs, play safe until you have expended them all to maximize your ability to employ gun and rocket attacks for site mop-up. Once a flight is winchester, it may call Miller Time and RTB; alternatively, the flight may remain to act as weasels for any remaining ARM shooters or to distract remaining threats from targeting other flights. This is at the discretion of the flight lead and is an all-or-nothing decision; do not split your flight!

Should a pilot need to RTB Bingo or due to damage sustained prior to CRYSTAL/DIAMOND or suppression of threats to a westward egress, then fly south to Jordanian airspace and climb immediately at best possible rate. I would much rather you have to deal with annoyed Jordanians than furious Syrians in the event of an ejection or forced landing.

Given the limits of the navigation system, I suggest setting D1 to WP1, and D2 to Marj Ruhayyil Air Base. We'll use TACAN for navigation to Ramat David.

Good hunting.

Colt 1

Kills: 2 SA-3 search radars (1-1, 1-3), 1 SA-3 tracking radar (1-3), 1 EWR (1-4), 1 SA-3 launcher (1-2), 2 trucks (1-1, 1-3)
Probable Damage: 1 SA-3 search radar (1-2), 2 SA-3 tracking radars (1-2, 1-3), 1 EWR (1-3), 3 SA-3 launchers (1-1, 1-2), 1 truck (1-2)
Expenditures: 2 AGM-45A Shrikes (0 hits), 4 Zuni rocket bursts (2 hits), 17 FFAR bursts (15 hits), 3 20mm cannon bursts (3 hits)
Losses: 1-1 (Forced landing, MIA presumed POW), 1-2 (KIA), 1-3 (KIA), 1-4 (Forced landing, MIA presumed POW)

Colt 2

Kills: 1 SA-3 search radar (2-1), 1 SA-2 tracking radar (1-1), 2 trucks (2-1, 2-4), 1 MiG-21 Fishbed (2-4)
Probable Damage: 1 SA-3 tracking radar (2-4), 1 truck (2-4)
Expenditures: 6 AGM-45A Shrikes (1 hit), 6 gun bursts (4 hits), 5 FFAR bursts (5 hits)
Losses: 2-1 (Ejected, MIA presumed POW), 2-2 (KIA), 2-3 (MIA)

Of the 8 aircraft in Colt 1 and 2, the sole pilot to return was now-Seren Sauer, Colt 2-4. Based on his testimony and all available telemetry, we have been able to piece together the following:

The initial approach was executed as planned; however, approaching the EWR that was the first target a breakdown in comms led to the two flights becoming disorganized on approach to Khalkhalah Air Base and the nearby air defenses. Despite this, the three sites guarding it were disabled and degraded with the use of rocket and gun attacks. The Syrian Air Force scrambled much quicker than anticipated, however. The initial wave of MiG-23 Flogger interceptors passed over us and engaged the CAP, but a second wave of MiG-21 Fishbed fighters dove on Colt shortly after. With the exceptions of Colt 1-3, who Syria is claiming to have downed with AAA fire, and Colt 2-4, the Syrian fighters engaged and downed 6 aircraft for 1 probable loss, claimed by Seren Sauer while unsuccessfully attempting to peel the bandit off Colt 2-1 (who successfully ejected and is presumed captured or evading Syrian forces).

While the mission was tactically successful at degrading air defenses in the Khalkhalah area, it cannot be seen as anything but a serious setback given the failure to completely accomplish the tasking and the loss of 7 aircraft.

COLT 1/2 FLIGHT PLAN

Colt Intraflight: 133.00

Ramat David Tower: 260.00
ABM (Sling Shot): 261.00
Package Comms (Matzo Maker): 262.00

Planned loadout to be 1 TER of 3 Zuni pods on station 3, 2 TERs of 2 Zuni pods on stations 2 and 4, and 2 Zuni pods on stations 1 and 5. At pilot discretion either or both Zuni pods on 1/5 may be replaced with either AIM-9P5 or AGM-45A Shrike missiles for self defense against air or SAM/AAA threats.

The flight plans for Colt 1 and 2 are as above. After takeoff and formup, we will ingress at medium altitude, between 6000 to 10000 feet depending on visibility. As we approach objective PANDA our plan will be to strike any targets found with Zunis in dive attacks; the recommended parameters are 30 degree dive, 380 knots and 5000ft AGL with sight depression at zero, or 20 degree dive, 375 knots and 4500ft AGL with sight depression at 5. Diving lower is discouraged due to the AAA threat, but if the air defenses are offline, distracted or otherwise not a factor pilots may conduct passes with their desired parameters. Once you are Winchester on Zunis, conduct gun passes if there is no AAA threat but do not RTB until your entire flight is Winchester; stick together as a group.

Once PANDA has been hit we will shift to TIGER or LLAMA as appropriate and attack targets there in the same manner. If you wish to request a vector or report intel to Sling Shot, remember that your A/G radar range mode is effective to 7.5 nm. Simply enter a 10 degree dive while pointing your sight at the unit and it'll give you the slant range to that point, which hopefully will help cue Sling Shot.
