I had a coworker who loved platformers/metroidvanias and basically this game was right up his alley but he also had a phobia of bugs and bug-like creatures so he refused to even consider playing it. So don't worry OP, there's no way your reasons were dumber than his.

I dunno if I was just playing it wrong but the first 'real' boss, i think it was the hornet, just required a really tight loop of perfect execution, like it was just a really tight circling jumping pattern that needed to be repeated over and over to beat the boss. that first big enemy that's near the start on the right hand side is there to show you the games combat style i think - really quick repetitions of closing range and then getting out before the attack comes. just wasn't really for me, Iiked a lot of what it did though for sure - may revisit someday. im a big souls and castlevaania fan too so I wish I liked it more for sure

i started over bc i lost like 300 moneys permanently bc i got overconfident found a charm i had missed in the first zone, went and killed the first two bosses and unlocked the trolleys without getting hit once i am so good at video games

There is the barest bones of a story and even two new endings (they're nearly the same, but one of them is suuuper evil while the other one is probably the nicest), but the whole context is this weird dream arena where you fight gauntlets of enemies and harder versions of bosses, including a harder version of the final boss. It's like the Colosseum of Fools, but way, way, way more of it. It is very much laser-focused on relearning all of the boss patterns (this time FASTER!!!) aspect of the game, and has very little to offer to people who liked the whole 'exploring a depressing world and meeting new and memorable characters' part. okay so i just did Greenpath, fought Hornet (for the first time?) that was a pretty tough fight! took me about 10 tries, even though her patterns are easy it took me a minute to calm down enough. what a fun fight i think this is probably the best game i've played in many years... on its way to my permanent top 10 for sure. just, wow . so perfectly made!!!
