ive really never understood why you'd do this though. definitely dont do this to be safe. a driver is going to look to the nearest car, not a bike, if they hear a car horn.

you actually have a built in horn as a cyclist. its your voice. I use "YOOOOOO", "(HEY)AY YO:, and/or "guttural heavy metal scream" mostly.

It's more in the case of being merged into, or not being given right of way

The horn seems to hit some receptors in the car brain to give respect for long enough for me to pass by

Being able to "speak car" on a car dominanted landscape is a real confidence booster

My best argument for me having dicked about with an old car battery and a soldering iron?

I'm not making some grand statement that everyone should do this. It's way too heavy and unweildy

I having a bit of fun being able to honk at people who close pass or just straight up don't see me. They sure as hell don't hear my bell 5 metres away in their car on a main road.

I don't see why else you would do it? Or your problem with this?

Being able to honk has genuine impact on my experience as a pedal powered road user

I'm with him. I love my bike, it's an aluminium framed thing with a hub gear but when I rode a dutch style shopping bike I was blown away by how much easier and more comfortable it was. Slow as poo poo, but so comfy. I want one for pottering to the shops.

I hate any bike which cannot freewheel. Single speeds are fine, but there is no advantage to fixed bicycles.

I can control my speed going down a hill without wearing on the brake. Which I do every day because I’ve had a few messed up high speed crashes on downhills that I’ve got a bit of PTSD over. In general being able to control speed without wearing brakes down is useful. I do have a front one regardless because I’m not suicidal.

Single speeds are just fashion bikes for dipshit hipsters.

Controlling your speed with your legs is useful. You can go walking speed down a steep hill with your legs if you want. I’m not talking about constantly skidding the stupid thing.

Anecdotally, I had a really scary near miss situation at high speed. A car suddenly pulled out in front of me and I had both sets of brakes fail. Ended up having to jam my heel into the back wheel to stop the bike.

Why pedal only some of the time when you can pedal all the time and while braking? Fixed gear is fun and great and makes your muscles big

You're riding bicycles with bad maintenance.

Controlling speed with brakes is better than legs.

There is no scenario in which a fixed gear will be better than brakes. That is assuming your bicycle isn't so poorly maintained that it falls apart during use.

No way dude I’m mad now I will never not be mad anymore.

One time I was going really fast in a near zero visibility thunder storm and spotted a junkie standing in the middle of the bike path gawking up at the sky with no umbrella too late to stop. It was like colliding with a brick wall. He was so sturdy. It barely even seemed to register with him what had happened.

I find the concept of adding risk without any reward to be dumb. Everything a fixed gear bike can do, a single speed (freewheel with brakes) can do better and safer.

But sure, ride a dumb bike.
