I'm still of the opinion that Sonic the hedgehog is the worst intellectual property ever produced and I don't think anything's going to change my mind on that And yes I am aware that Pokemon exists

The game would have to be completed in under a year to be ready in time for the 1993 holiday season. Morawiec considered this a "tight" schedule for a game that would capitalize on the series' popularity in North America.[21] To speed up production, Sega sent veteran staff from Japan to assist, including regular Sonic the Hedgehog artist Katsuhiko Sato. Despite the transfer of these staff, the game was still not predicted to be complete in time. As a result, Sega Technical Institute staff changed the programming language from assembly to C, an unusual choice for Genesis games at the time.[21][22] Morawiec said the choice caused frame rate and optimization problems, but greatly accelerated development. In the space of 61 days between June and August 1993, the project evolved from a roughly playable build with no collision detection systems or character animations to a completed game.[21]

Actually, Yuji Naka would have gone ballistic and we'd never have gotten Sonic 3 so maybe not

IMO the draw of the original 16 bit era games was more about the feeling of momentum the character had, and how angular momentum was preserved over curved ground. In Mario and pretty much every other platformer at the time you just move in the direction you press, but in Sonic it's more like manipulating a rolling ball. The speed aspect was hyped up because it makes for good marketing but you didn't really even go that fast in those early games, and most levels were full of platforming obstacles that would punish you if you just tried to hold right. Regarding the characters, yeah they kinda suck but they weren't designed to be fully fleshed out individuals that the player actually cares about, just vehicles for making a fun platformer, like Mario. The only people who care about Sonic characters are the people who jerk off to them, and even then the are probably a lot of people who jerk off to them and still don't care.
